RESUMO

We describe a rare case of injury to a branch of the brachial artery in a 48-year-old man with a bicep musculotendinous injury. His presenting symptoms included severe pain, swelling, and paresthesias in the right upper extremity. Examination revealed significant soft tissue swelling with ecchymoses in the right upper arm with diminished palpable pulses. Imaging revealed a biceps muscle injury along with active arterial extravasation of a branch of the deep brachial artery. Interventional radiology successfully performed coil embolization. Bicep musculotendinous injury is typically characterized by pain, swelling, and decreased strength. Rarely, complications such as compartment syndrome have been reported. Brachial arterial injury has not been implicated in the setting of this entity, especially in the absence of blunt or penetrating trauma, until our current patient's presentation.

In this study, density plume visualizations and statistical comparisons were made of enterococci bacteria (the main marine recreational microbial water quality indicator) densities, both before and after the upgrade of the discharge from the South Bay Ocean Outfall (SBOO) to secondary treatment level, so that the effect of this upgrade on ocean microbial water quality could be assessed. During the dry weather (bathing) season, reduction in enterococci densities was rather limited with only 2 shore stations and one kelp station showing significant reductions, and none showing increased compliance frequency. During the wet weather season, although the signature of land-based sources of bacterial pollution were evident, a majority of both shore (7 of the 11 stations) and kelp (4 of the 7 stations) stations showed statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05) reductions enterococci densities pointing to the role of the upgrade to secondary treatment in improving microbial water quality.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by an extended polyglutamine (polyQ) domain within the first exon of the huntingtin protein (htt). PolyQ expansion directly invokes the formation of a heterogenous mixture of toxic htt aggregates, including fibrils and oligomers. While htt is a cytosolic protein, it also associates with numerous membranous surfaces within the cell, leading to altered organelle morphology and dysfunction. Here, the impact of macromolecular crowding on htt aggregation in bulk solution and at solid/liquid or membrane/liquid interfaces was investigated. Dextran, Ficoll, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were used as crowding agents. In bulk solution, crowding enhanced the heterogeneity of non-fibrillar aggregate species formed in a crowder dependent manner. However, crowding agents interfered with the deposition of htt fibrils on mica, suggesting that a crowded aqueous phase influences the interaction of htt with interfaces. By use of in situ atomic force microcopy (AFM), the aggregation of htt directly at mica and bilayer interfaces was tracked. The predominate aggregates type observed to form at the mica interface was fibrillar, but oligomeric aggregates of various stabilities were also observed. Crowding in the aqueous phase suppressed deposition and formation of htt aggregates on mica. In contrast, the addition of crowders enhanced deposition of htt aggregates onto supported total brain lipid extract (TBLE) bilayers. Different crowding agents led to distinct htt aggregates on supported bilayers with unique morphological impact on bilayer integrity. Collectively, these observations point to the complexity of htt aggregation at interfaces and that crowding in the aqueous phase profoundly influences this process.

Handwriting, a complex motor process involves the coordination of both the upper limb and visual system. The gaze behavior that occurs during the handwriting process is an area that has been little studied. This study investigated the eye-movements of adults during writing and reading tasks. Eye and handwriting movements were recorded for six different words over three different tasks. The results compared reading and handwriting the same words, a between condition comparison and a comparison between the two handwriting tasks. Compared to reading, participants produced more fixations during handwriting tasks and the average fixation durations were longer. When reading fixations were found to be mostly around the center of word, whereas fixations when writing appear to be made for each letter in a written word and were located around the base of letters and flowed in a left to right direction. Between the two writing tasks more fixations were made when words were written individually compared to within sentences, yet fixation durations were no different. Correlation of the number of fixations made to kinematic variables revealed that horizontal size and road length held a strong correlation with the number of fixations made by participants.
