RESUMO

We present a nonlinear field theory of a three-sublattice hexagonal antiferromagnet. The order parameter is the spin frame, an orthogonal triplet of vectors related to sublattice magnetizations and spin chirality. The exchange energy, quadratic in spin-frame gradients, has three coupling constants, only two of which manifest themselves in the bulk. As a result, the three spin-wave velocities satisfy a universal relation. Vortices generally have an elliptical shape with the eccentricity determined by the Lamé parameters.

RESUMO

This paper gives a pedagogical introduction to the mechanics of ferromagnetic solitons. We start with the dynamics of a single spin and develop all the tools required for the description of the dynamics of solitons in a ferromagnet.

RESUMO

We derive a unified theory of spin and charge degrees of freedom in a ferromagnet. The spin-transfer torque and spin electromotive force are examined from the coarse-grained perspective of collective coordinates. The resulting equations of motion reflect a balance of conservative, gyroscopic (Berry-phase), and dissipative forces. We then expand the space of collective coordinates by adding the electric charge. The adiabatic spin-transfer torque and spin electromotive force (emf) turn out to be a gyroscopic force; their nonadiabatic counterparts are a dissipative force.

RESUMO

We extend the well-known mapping between the easy-plane ferromagnet and electrostatics in d=2 spatial dimensions to dynamical and quantum phenomena in a d=2+1 spacetime. Ferromagnetic vortices behave like quantum particles with an electric charge equal to the vortex number and a magnetic flux equal to the transverse spin of the vortex core. Vortices with half-integer core spin exhibit fermionic statistics.

RESUMO

We study the dynamical structure factor of the spin-1 pyrochlore material NaCaNi_{2}F_{7}, which is well described by a weakly perturbed nearest-neighbour Heisenberg Hamiltonian, Our three approaches-molecular dynamics simulations, stochastic dynamical theory, and linear spin wave theory-reproduce remarkably well the momentum dependence of the experimental inelastic neutron scattering intensity as well as its energy dependence with the exception of the lowest energies. We discuss two surprising aspects and their implications for quantum spin liquids in general: the complete lack of sharp quasiparticle excitations in momentum space and the success of the linear spin wave theory in a regime where it would be expected to fail for several reasons.

RESUMO

This article reviews static and dynamic interfacial effects in magnetism, focusing on interfacially-driven magnetic effects and phenomena associated with spin-orbit coupling and intrinsic symmetry breaking at interfaces. It provides a historical background and literature survey, but focuses on recent progress, identifying the most exciting new scientific results and pointing to promising future research directions. It starts with an introduction and overview of how basic magnetic properties are affected by interfaces, then turns to a discussion of charge and spin transport through and near interfaces and how these can be used to control the properties of the magnetic layer. Important concepts include spin accumulation, spin currents, spin transfer torque, and spin pumping. An overview is provided to the current state of knowledge and existing review literature on interfacial effects such as exchange bias, exchange spring magnets, spin Hall effect, oxide heterostructures, and topological insulators. The article highlights recent discoveries of interface-induced magnetism and non-collinear spin textures, non-linear dynamics including spin torque transfer and magnetization reversal induced by interfaces, and interfacial effects in ultrafast magnetization processes.

RESUMO

In condensed matter systems, formation of long-range order (LRO) is often accompanied by new excitations. However, in many geometrically frustrated magnetic systems, conventional LRO is suppressed, while non-trivial spin correlations are still observed. A natural question to ask is then what is the nature of the excitations in this highly correlated state without broken symmetry? Frequently, applying a symmetry breaking field stabilizes excitations whose properties reflect certain aspects of the anomalous state without LRO. Here we report a THz spectroscopy study of novel excitations in quantum spin ice Yb2Ti2O7 under a <001> directed magnetic field. At large positive fields, both right- and left-handed magnon and two-magnon-like excitations are observed. The g-factors of these excitations are dramatically enhanced in the low-field limit, showing a crossover of these states into features consistent with the quantum string-like excitations proposed to exist in quantum spin ice in small <001> fields.

RESUMO

The dynamics of a vortex in a thin-film ferromagnet resembles the motion of a charged massless particle in a uniform magnetic field. Similar dynamics is expected for other magnetic textures with a nonzero Skyrmion number. However, recent numerical simulations reveal that Skyrmion magnetic bubbles show significant deviations from this model. We show that a Skyrmion bubble possesses inertia and derive its mass from the standard theory of a thin-film ferromagnet. In addition to center-of-mass motion, other low energy modes are waves on the edge of the bubble traveling with different speeds in opposite directions.

RESUMO

We present a numerical study of magnetic ordering in spin ice on kagome, a two-dimensional lattice of corner-sharing triangles. The magnet has six ground states and the ordering occurs in two stages, as one might expect for a six-state clock model. In spin ice with short-range interactions up to second neighbours, there is an intermediate critical phase separated from the paramagnetic and ordered phases by Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transitions. In dipolar spin ice, the intermediate phase has long-range order of staggered magnetic charges. The high- and low-temperature phase transitions are of the Ising and 3-state Potts universality classes, respectively. Freeze-out of defects in the charge order produce a very large spin correlation length in the intermediate phase. As a result of that, the lower-temperature transition appears to be of the KT type.

RESUMO

We study quantum spin ice in an external magnetic field applied along a <100> direction. When quantum spin fluctuations are weak, elementary excitations are quantum strings with monopoles at their ends manifested as multiple spin wave branches in the dynamical structure factor. Strong quantum fluctuations make the string tension negative and give rise to the deconfinement of monopoles. We discuss our results in the light of recent neutron scattering experiments in Yb2Ti2O7.

RESUMO

Artificial spin ice has become a valuable tool for understanding magnetic interactions on a microscopic level. The strength in the approach lies in the ability of a synthetic array of nanoscale magnets to mimic crystalline materials, composed of atomic magnetic moments. Unfortunately, these nanoscale magnets, patterned from metal alloys, can show substantial variation in relevant quantities such as the coercive field, with deviations up to 16%. By carefully studying the reversal process of artificial kagome ice, we can directly measure the distribution of coercivities, and, by switching from disconnected islands to a connected structure, we find that the coercivity distribution can achieve a deviation of only 3.3%. These narrow deviations should allow the observation of behavior that mimics canonical spin-ice materials more closely.

RESUMO

Artificial spin ice has been recently implemented in two-dimensional arrays of mesoscopic magnetic wires. We propose a theoretical model of magnetization dynamics in artificial spin ice under the action of an applied magnetic field. Magnetization reversal is mediated by domain walls carrying two units of magnetic charge. They are emitted by lattice junctions when the local field exceeds a critical value Hc required to pull apart magnetic charges of opposite sign. Positive feedback from Coulomb interactions between magnetic charges induces avalanches in magnetization reversal.

RESUMO

Spin excitations in an ordered Heisenberg magnet are magnons-bosons with spin 1. That may change when frustration and quantum fluctuations suppress the order and restore the spin-rotation symmetry. We show that spin excitations in the S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a kagome lattice are spinons-fermions with spin 1/2. In the ground state the system can be described as a collection of small, heavy pairs of spinons with spin 0. A magnetic excitation of lowest energy amounts to breaking up a pair into two spinons at a cost of 0.06 J.

RESUMO

We show that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions can substantially modify the phase diagram of spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladders in a magnetic field provided they compete with exchange. For nonfrustrated ladders, they induce a local magnetization along the DM vector that turns the gapless intermediate phase into an Ising phase with broken translational symmetry, while for frustrated ladders, they extend the Ising order of the half-integer plateau to the surrounding gapless phases of the purely Heisenberg case. Implications for experimental ladder and dimer systems are discussed.

RESUMO

We provide a simple explanation of complex magnetic patterns observed in ferromagnetic nanostructures. To this end we identify elementary topological defects in the field of magnetization: ordinary vortices in the bulk and vortices with half-integer winding numbers confined to the edge. Domain walls found in experiments and numerical simulations in strips and rings are composite objects containing two or more of the elementary defects.

RESUMO

We study the effects of magnetoelastic couplings on pyrochlore antiferromagnets. We employ Landau theory, extending an investigation begun by Yamashita and Ueda for the case of S = 1, and classical analyses to argue that such couplings generate bond order via a spin-Peierls transition. This is followed by, or concurrent with, a transition into one of several possible low-temperature Néel phases, with most simply collinear, but also coplanar or mixed spin patterns. In a collinear Néel phase, a dispersionless stringlike magnon mode dominates the resulting excitation spectrum, providing a distinctive signature of the parent geometrically frustrated state. We comment on the experimental situation.
