RESUMO

Objective: Female genital mutilation, which harms women physically and psychologically, also causes serious problems in sexual life that continue throughout life. This study aimed to determine the impact of female genital mutilation on sexual outcomes in Ibadan, Nigeria. Method: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. A self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain data from 161 women who agreed to participate in the study. After the data were collected, the sample group was divided into two groups those with female genital mutilation (84) and those without (77), and they were compared in terms of sexual outcomes. Results: Type I (77.3%) and type II (22.7%) mutilations were found in women with female genital mutilation. It was determined that women with FGM experienced statistically significantly more pain and bleeding during vaginal penetration than uncircumcised women. At the same time, the orgasm rate was found to be statistically significantly lower in this group. Conclusions: Our study revealed that female genital mutilation and enlargement of the incision area negatively affect sexual health.

RESUMO

This study was carried out to determine the effect of treatment on quality of life, symptoms, and social life in patients with gynecologic cancer. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews to evaluate the individual and disease characteristics of the patients. The Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale was used to determine the severity of the side effects. Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General 4 was used to evaluate the quality of life. The total post-treatment quality of life scores of the patients were lower than their total pre-treatment scores. Patients who received chemotherapy and chemoradiotherapy had a lower quality of life than those who received radiotherapy, and they were less involved in social activities. Half of the individuals participated in social activities in the pre-treatment period, but this rate decreased to 16.4% after the treatment started. In this study, the quality-of-life scores of the patients who received gynecologic cancer treatment decreased after treatment and the patients experienced many symptoms at an increasingly severe level.

RESUMO

Objective: This study aimed to understand the link between exposure to a sexual health course and nursing students'. Method: Third-year nursing students (N = 191; 83 experimental and 59 controls) were enrolled in a semi-experimental pre-and post-test study. Results: It was found that the students who took the sexual health course had a lower belief in sexual myths than the students who did not take the course. While the sexual myth scale total average before the course was 63.65 ± 19.36, the post-course mean score was 48.64 ± 16.6. Conclusions: With sexual health education, individuals' false beliefs and risks regarding sexual health are reduced.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the gender equality attitudes of nursing students studying at a private university, the sociodemographic factors affecting gender equality, and the difference in gender attitudes between Turkish and foreign students. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Faculty of Nursing at Near East University in March and April 2019. Three hundred six students studying in Turkish and English nursing programs in the thirdyear of study were included in the research. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the GEM scale were used as the data collection tools. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 21.11 ± 3.88. 76.1% of the students were female and 33.3 students were foreign. The Gender Equality Men scores of the Turkish and foreign students were significantly different (p=0.001). Gender, the educational level of the father, a history of violence in the family, and talking about family and sexual issues affected the gender attitudes of all students. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study indicate that culture, gender, family education, and a history of violence in the family affected the gender equality scores of the nursing students.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to examine the quality of life in female Turkish patients with overactive bladder (OAB). The investigation was conducted as a cross-sectional study between January and April 2010. Two hundred eighty female patients responded to the Overactive Bladder Validated Eight-Question Screener, the OAB disease-specific health-related quality-of-life scale (OAB questionnaire (OAB-q)) and the general quality-of-life scale EuroQol Five-Dimensional Questionnaire (EQ-5D) for the study. Of the 280 patients, 38.9% was classified as having OAB. The mean age was 47.0 ± 8.7. All of the quality-of-life domains (coping, concern, sleep and social) and OAB-q total scores in women with OAB were significantly worse than in women without OAB (P < 0.001 for all). Similarly, the EQ-5D(index) and EQ-5D(VAS) scores for women with OAB were significantly worse than for women without OAB (P < 0.001 and P = 0.006, respectively). OAB-q and EQ-5D(index) scores in menopausal women were significantly lower than non-menopausal women (P < 0.05) in patients with OAB. In conclusion, OAB negatively affects quality of life in Turkish women. However, many women's quality of life can be improved if the patients seek medical treatment. Thus, nurses should encourage the patients to seek medical support in order to cope with health-related quality-of-life problems.
