[Lipid peroxidation in chronic lead exposure]. / Prouchvane vurkhu lipidnata peroksidatsiia pri khronichno olovno vuzdeistvie.

The state of lipid peroxidation, monitored by MDA concentration in the blood plasma of 46 battery workers with lead level in the blood in the 1.26-5.6 mol/l range is investigated. Higher MDA concentration (4.61 + 0.6) mol (ml in the blood plasma of exposed workers in comparison with the control sample of nonexposed workers is statistically established. The greater part of exposes workers (56.6%) have MDA concentration above the upper reference range. The significant correlation (r = +0.54) of the lipid peroxidation with the lead level in the blood is established. The investigation results show the rise of lipid peroxidation in workers chronically exposed to lead. This rise is more significant at lead levels above 1.92 mol/l.

[The lipid peroxidation level and antioxidant status of the plasma in patients operated on under propofol (Diprivan) anesthesia]. / Nivo na lipidnata peroksidatsiia i antioksidanten status na plazmata na patsienti, operirani pod anesteziia s propofol (diprivan).

It has been investigated the level of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status of blood plasma from patients operated under general anaesthesia with propofol (Diprivan). The following parameters have been registered: TBA-reactive substances (TBARS) and fluorescent lipofuscine-like lipid peroxidation products, before, directly after and 24 hours after anaesthesia. It was not shown statistically significant changes of TBARS before and after anaesthesia. The levels of TBARS were initially higher in comparison of referent levels. The fluorescent lipofuscine-like products were increased weakly after anaesthesia directly but the changes were not statistically significant, too. The antioxidant capacity of blood plasma was decreased weakly 24 hours after anaesthesia, in comparison of the levels, registered before anaesthesia. The good correlation between fluorescent products and antioxidant status of plasma was observed.

[The antiradiation properties of betamide under conditions of sublethal and lethal gamma irradiation]. / Issledovanie protivoluchevykh svoistv betamida v usloviiakh subletal'nogo i letal'nogo gamma-oblucheniia.

Bone marrow cellularity in the femur, mass and cellularity of the spleen and small intestine, and nucleic acid concentration in the leukocyte mass of blood were investigated after the intraperitoneal administration of betamide (500 mg/kg) 15 min before gamma irradiation of mice with doses of 4, 7 and 9 Gy. The number of myelokaryocytes and splenocytes in the protected animals was shown to exceed considerably that in the controls on days 3 and 9 after irradiation with the three doses. With betamide injected on day 9 following irradiation the number of nucleated cells of the small intestine was larger and the nucleic acid concentration in leukocytes higher than the same indices in the irradiated control.

[Radiation injuries to mice in relation to the modes of administration of adeturon]. / Radiatsionnoe porazhenie myshei v zavisimosti ot sposobov primeneniia adeturona.

In experiments with mice the influence of adeturon, a preparation obtained in Bulgaria, on the survival rate, leucocytes dynamics, cellularity of bone marrow and spleen, and on nucleic acids in the peripheral blood has been investigated. The comparative analysis of the results obtained indicates that the protective and therapeutic administration of adeturon is more effective than a single injection of the drug immediately after irradiation.

[Effect of isothiuronium alkylamidines and adeturon on the activity of lactate dehydrogenase and its isoenzymes in rat blood serum and organs]. / Vliianie izotiuronievykh alkilamidinov i adeturona na aktivnost' laktatdegidrogenazy i ee izofermentov v syvorotke krovi i organakh krys.

A study was made of the effect of four types of S-omega-carboxamidinoalkyl isothiourea, differing in the carbon chain length between amidine and isothiuronium groups, and adeturon on activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDG) and its isoenzymes in blood serum and organs of rats. Adeturon and compounds with one and three methylene groups elicit a radioprotective effect whereas substances with an even number of methylene groups have no such an effect. The obtained data indicate that changes in activity of LDG and its isoenzymes depend upon the structure of the substance applied. This makes LDG an adequate model in comparative studying the specificity of biochemical effects induced by the radioprotective agents and substances similar in their structure but having no radioprotective efficiency.

Temporal and dose characteristics of nucleic acids reduction in the leucocytes of irradiated mice.

The kinetics of the changes of the nucleic acids level in the leucocytes of mice, as well as the leucocyte count were traced over a 30 day period, after a 2 Gy gamma irradiation. The changes of these parameters, which are dose-bound, were examined at the 24th and 72nd hour after irradiation with doses, belonging to the 0,1 to 6,0 Gy dose range. During the progress of the radiation damage the changes in the nucleic acids show a phase character that reaches its minimum on day 3 postradiation, with a recovery about day 30. The relation nucleic acids level/radiation dose is described with a logarithmic function. With both time intervals the nucleic acids level decreases with the logarithm of the dose, the reduction in the nucleic acids concentration being more clearly marked on day 3 postradiation. The rate of the nucleic acids level change is not adequate to that of the leucocyte count.

The effect of acceleration and adeturon, a radioprotector, on the content of nucleic acids, the count, composition and osmotic resistance of white and red blood cells was investigated. Male mice of the H strain were exposed to +20 Gx for 5 min. The above parameters were measured 1, 24 and 48 hrs after the exposure. The nucleic acid content decreased significantly immediately after the exposure and tended to return to normal afterwards. The leucocyte count was increased during all observation periods, and the erythrocyte count was decreased 1 hr after the exposure. Osmotic resistance of white and red blood cells varied in a different manner after the exposure. Adeturon administered at optimal protective doses (300 mg/kg) modified regulatory mechanisms of the animal body.
