RESUMO

A leptospira-like spirochete was isolated from a lymphocyte culture from a HIV-I and HTLV-I/II-positive patient. On the basis of serological, biological and morphological characteristics of the cells of the isolated strain (strain Lisboa), we conclude that it is a member of the genus Leptonema.

RESUMO

Antibodies to proteins of Mason-Pfizer monkey virus (M-PMV) were screened in sera from 61 healthy donors living in Guinea-Bissau (4 HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibody positive HIV = human immunodeficiency virus), from 19 healthy French European blood donors, and from 9 French patients with induced immunodeficiency prior to bone marrow transplantation (all HIV-1 antibody negative). In 30 (49%) of the African sera tested, antibodies reacting against p27 and/or p14 were detected by western blot. Some of these cases were confirmed to be positive using radioimmuno precipitation assay. Only one serum from a French blood donor was detected by western blot to be slightly positive against p27 M-PMV. Thirty-two sera screened for M-PMV were also tested for squirrel monkey retrovirus by western blot. In eight (25%) sera antibodies at least against p36 were detected. Among squirrel monkey retrovirus positive sera, three were also positive with p27 M-PMV. The other five were found to be M-PMV negative.

RESUMO

The prevalence of antibodies to HTLV-I in 5,475 Portuguese from 6 regions spanning the country was studied. Overall seroprevalence was 0.55%, indicating that Portugal is not an endemic area for this virus. Seropositives were distributed throughout the country, and no geographic clustering was observed. The seroprevalence of individuals who had lived in former Portuguese colonies in Africa (0.7%) was significantly higher than that of individuals who had not been in Africa (0.36%). An increase in seroprevalence with age was noted, and more females than males were antibody-positive, though not significantly so. Serum from one donor (1711), originating from Guinea-Bissau, was shown by Western blot and radioimmune precipitation to react with various proteins of HTLV-I, HIV-1 and -2, and SIV. Based on the serologic profiles and isolation of bona fide HTLV-I from her lymphocytes (confirmed by immunologic analysis, molecular cloning of the provirus and restriction enzyme analysis and sequencing of the DNA), together with the reactivity of her sera with an HIV-2 isolate obtained from her husband, we conclude that this donor was doubly infected with HTLV-I and HIV-2, rather than being the host to an as yet unidentified retrovirus.

RESUMO

PIP: To gather epidemiologic information on the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-2 in Portugal, sera were collected in 1985 from 156 healthy adults currently living in Portugal but natives of Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde Islands, Saint Tome/Prince, Angola, and Mozambique and from 321 native Portuguese men and women who had close contact with local African populations. As a control, sera were collected from 102 health Portuguese with no previous contact with Africa or African natives. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) developed by Diagnostic Pasteur was used to screen for antibodies to HIV. No positive reactions were recorded in the control population. In contracts, 9 (6%) of the African natives and 7 (2%) of the contacts of Africans were HIV-positive, 6 of the positive sera were from women and 10 were from men. Significantly, 1 of the HIV-2-positive serum samples was from a native of Mozambique and 3 were from natives of Angola. This suggests that HIV-2 infection may have spread to other former Portuguese colonies, and foreign army soldiers who were at 1 time residents of Mozambique or Angola should be considered a risk group capable of spreading HIV-2 infection to other countries.^ieng

RESUMO

Cultures from pig bone marrow cells were infected with ASFV and the replication cycle was studied. In the cytoplasmic replication areas there are a differentiation of membrane segments. Some of them are polygonal, which give rise to virus particles. An over production of viral coded materials, including non-polygonal membranes seems to be an important feature of the replicative cycle of ASFV in this cell system. Viruses are released enveloped with a cellular membrane. Paracrystalline arrays of viruses are seldom seen in the cytoplasm. At no time did we see viruses in the nucleus. Infected cells showed marked cytopathic effect, beginning at early times post infection.
