Esophageal complications following anterior cervical fusion procedures have been reported in the literature as rare complications of such surgery. The complications associated with esophageal penetration have ranged from minor complications to mediastinitis and death. The following case report is of a rare complication of penetration of the esophagus by an anterior cervical fixation device that resulted in a benign post-operative course.

A retrospective study of seven patients referred to a spinal injury unit following surgery for thoracic disc prolapse is presented. Early diagnosis and increased awareness of the condition followed by lateral rhachotomy or anterolateral decompression is essential if the former dismal prognosis is to be improved.

Ten cases of post-traumatic paraplegia are described in whom syringomyelia symptoms have supervened. Five patients have been operated upon after investigation. Operative results have been encouraging. A discussion of likely pathogenetic mechanisms is presented.

Marlex mesh is a synthetic material which has been used clinically to replace ligamentous structures. It serves as a scaffold for infiltration of the fibroblasts eventually becoming mature fibrocytes. In dogs, almost totally mature fibrocytes appear within the framework of the Marlex mesh prosthesis by the end of 3 months of healing.

Experience with 56 cases of osteoarticular allograft transplantation of the extremities is presented. Cadaveric allograft including a joint surface and a variable amount of shaft is used in the treatment of aggressive benign and low-grade malignant tumors involving a long bone near a joint. The preoperative radiographic evaluation is outlined. Thirty-four patients had an uncomplicated course. Twenty-two patients had complications including aseptic fracture, infection, and tumor recurrence. The radiographic spectrum of both complicated and uncomplicated cases is illustrated.
