RESUMO

One hundred sixty licensed morticians were surveyed to examine differences among business owners, managers, and employees on the relations proposed by G. F. Koeske and R. D. Koeske's (1993) stressor-strain-outcome model. Forty-eight percent of the morticians were owners, 16% were managers, and 36% were employees. Owners had less social support from work-related sources and perceived lower levels of role ambiguity and role conflict, less emotional exhaustion, and higher levels of job satisfaction and professional satisfaction than did nonowners. Social support from work-related sources and ownership each moderated the relationship between emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction but not between emotional exhaustion and professional satisfaction. Emotional exhaustion partially mediated the effect of stressors on job satisfaction and professional satisfaction.

RESUMO

There is growing concern that rapidly changing patterns of work organization and employment pose risk for occupational illness and injury. In the present article, we assert that these changes create new needs and opportunities for research and practice by psychologists in the area of work organization and health. We begin with an historical overview of the contribution of psychologists to the occupational safety and health field, and to the study of work organization and health. We then describe new initiatives by the American Psychological Association and national health organizations in the United States and Europe to frame a new field of study--called "occupational health psychology"--that focuses on the topic of work organization and health. We conclude with a discussion of emerging research needs and trends within this field.

RESUMO

This article investigates the impact of firm work force characteristics, human resource practices, and external environmental attributes upon the likelihood that a company provides postretirement income and health care benefits. Using data from a national stratified random sample of 953 companies with 20 or more employees, logistic regression models were estimated to explore the impact of these three sets of variables on benefit provision. Results indicate that work force characteristics and human resources practices contribute considerably to the likelihood that these benefits are provided and that the impact of some of the more global characteristics, such as industry, diminishes in a fuller predictive model.

RESUMO

Experiments assessed the development of tolerance to morphine stimulus control during treatment with selected maintenance doses of morphine. Separate groups of rats were trained to discriminate saline and either 3.2 mg/kg or 5.6 mg/kg morphine under fixed-ratio schedules of food delivery. Dose-response functions for generalization of morphine stimulus control were determined before, during, and after repeated treatment with selected doses of morphine. Similar experiments were performed with repeated pentobarbital treatment in order to assess the pharmacological selectivity of tolerance. Repeated treatment with saline, 3.2 mg/kg morphine, or twice daily injections of 17.8 mg/kg pentobarbital produced no tolerance to morphine stimulus control. In contrast, treatment with daily injections of 10 mg/kg or twice daily injections of 10 or 17.8 mg/kg morphine produced a dose-dependent increase in the dose of morphine required for stimulus control. The magnitude of tolerance to morphine stimulus control varied directly with the maintenance dose of morphine and was slightly greater for a lower than a higher morphine training dose. Termination of repeated treatment was followed by a return to initial sensitivity, without additional training. Tolerance to morphine stimulus control was not necessarily accompanied by tolerance to its rate-suppressing effects.
