RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to analyze the statistical association between variable clinical phenotypes of the orbit, mandible, ear, nerve, soft tissue (OMENS) classification system in Oriental patients with hemifacial microsomia (HFM) and compare the data of Oriental children with data from other Western centers. One hundred consecutive patients with HFM referred to the Seoul National University Children Hospital were chosen between March 2009 and April 2010. They were classified according to the OMENS classification system, and statistical analyses were performed. The total OMENS scores were correlated significantly with all 5 component scores. In comparison with the previous data of Western centers, the orbit and ear components had statistically higher severity. Our retrospective study in Oriental children demonstrated that the pathophysiology of HFM is a complex process and that the components of HFM have a close relationship. For the ethnic difference, further etiologic studies on the molecular basis are required.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to review the process of creating and implementing a comprehensive plan to reduce diagnostic radiation exposure at our institution. CONCLUSION: This process, which was initiated by forming a radiation dose reduction committee, addressed several different issues to improve patient safety. These include avoidance of unnecessary CT examinations, adjusting individual scanning parameters, revising protocols, use of shielding and dose monitoring, and implementing computer-based dose modulation software as well as educating referring physicians and radiologic technologists.

RESUMO

Eleven new polymeric carboxylic acids with widely different solubilities in water have been synthesized. The activities of these polymers against the ascitic sarcoma 180 tumor of mice and their acute toxicities in mice have been compared with molecular parameters of the polymers such as molecular weights, charge densities, and abilities to complex calcium and magnesium ions. The maximum effectiveness of these polymers against ascitic sarcoma 180 of mice is greatest for those polymers having fewer carboxyl groups ionized at pH 7. Toxicities are lower for polymers having more carboxyl groups ionized at pH 7.
