RESUMO

In current sampling approaches, there exists a divergence between the surveillance of arthropod-borne and that of non-arthropod-borne viruses. It is commonly held that the collection of vector specimens applies only to arbovirus surveillance and that the surveillance of non-arboviruses must rely on traditional methods that involve the sampling of blood, faeces or saliva, or other examinations. The vector-based approach is a sampling method that has the ability to survey both arboviruses and non-arboviruses by distinguishing engorged vector specimens from entire vector samples. Accordingly, five arboviruses and three non-arboviruses were detected in a study using a vector-based approach conducted during 2012-2015. Hence, this report provides the first description of the Taiwanese vector species for the bovine arboviruses detected. The present investigations demonstrate that the vector-based approach applies not only to the surveillance of arboviruses, but also has potential as a possible tool for monitoring non-arboviruses on livestock farms in the future.

RESUMO

The incidence of cardiovascular disorders is increasing worldwide. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. High blood pressure, high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. Other medical conditions such as diabetes, overweight, obesity and lifestyle can put people at a higher risk for coronary heart disease. The preventive measures based on the common drugs may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The present review highlights the contributions of therapeutic potential of phytochemicals in management of cardiovascular diseases. However, the delivery efficiency of therapeutic agents can be enhanced in order to improve the efficacy of phytochemicals as a therapeutic agent. The oral administration of phytochemicals as therapeutic agents is a common approach. The review highlights the recent development of natural products for the complementary treatment of cardiovascular diseases. These findings indicate that the combination of therapeutic drugs and natural products may improve the treatment efficacy of therapeutic agents.

RESUMO

An assay protocol based on single-tube, noninterrupted reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) for the detection of infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) is described. After the conditions for RT-PCR had been optimized, a primer set framing a region within the gene coding for IBDV VP2 protein was used to amplify a 318-bp fragment of the IBDV genome. Amplified product was detected with three strains of IBDV, whereas none was obtained from uninfected bursal tissue or seven unrelated avian viruses. The sensitivity of this RT-PCR was tested with purified viral RNA from three strains of IBDV. The detection limit was 10 fg in an ethidium bromide-stained gel. In addition, this assay system was used to detect IBDV in bursal-tissue specimens from commercially reared chickens. The identity of the amplified products from the tissue specimen preparation was determined by using a rapid, simple procedure in which internally nested, end-labeled probes were used.
