RESUMO
Bis(pyridine)(9,10-phenanthrenequinone)(9,10-phenanthrenediolato)copper(II), Cu(py)(2)(PhenCat)(PhenBQ), has been prepared by treating copper metal with 9,10-phenanthrenequinone in pyridine solution. In dilute solution, both Cu(py)(2)(PhenCat)(PhenBQ) and the related complex Cu(tmeda)(PhenCat)(PhenBQ) lose PhenBQ to form Cu(II)L(2)(PhenCat), where L(2)= tmeda, 2 py. EPR spectra recorded at temperatures between 300 and 77 K reveal the presence of species with radical and metal localized spins together at equilibrium. Equilibria between Cu(II)L(2)(PhenCat) and Cu(I)L(2)(PhenSQ) redox isomers are solvent dependent, with a shift to higher temperature for polar solvents. Both complexes are oxygen sensitive, reacting with dioxygen to give complexes of diphenic acid. Structural characterization on products obtained with tmeda show that dioxygen insertion across the C-C bond within the chelate ring leads to dimeric products with adjacent Cu(II) ions bridged by diphenate ligands. The addition of O(2) to Cu(tmeda)(PhenCat) in acetonitrile solution at 0 degrees C appears to form a peroxo complex, tentatively identified as Cu(tmeda)(O(2))(PhenQ) on the basis of iodometric titration, as the precursor to the diphenate complex.
RESUMO
The effect of low-output He-Ne laser rays on the survival of mouse lymphoma P388 cell cultures was studied on the basis of the colony forming ability. Irradiation with 1.3 and 9 joule of 5 and 10 mW He-Ne lasers, respectively, seemed to cause a relatively low cell necrosis. The survival curve did not show the shape characteristic of ionizing radiation.

The stimulatory effect of laser on the physiological healing process of the portio surface has been studied. It has been shown that He-Ne laser, 632.8 nm, 5 mV, 1 J/cm2, has a beneficial effect. 85 patients out of 100 recovered, 10 improved, 5 patients were left out of evaluation. No pathological changes were found at colposcopic and cytological controls.

In vitro experiments with human lymphocytes showed that if irradiations with coherent light of a He-Ne-laser were performed an immune suppressor effect is obtained. Using incoherent light of the same wavelength, effects only occur (80% compared to the laser) if the light is linear polarized.

The immune-suppressive action of laser rays was studied in directly irradiated human lymphocytes. It was found that the argon ion gas laser is more effective in the range between 488 and 501 nm than at other wavelengths and than the He--Ne laser (632 nm) of the same performance. It is assumed that the suppression of some undesirable immune reaction (auto-aggressive process) contributes to the stimulating effect of laser rays on wound healing.

Serum complement activity, immunoglobulin levels and the circulating auto-antibodies were studied in the course of laser treatment of 20 cases of crural ulcer. After temporary changes a normalization of the humoral immune response was observed in the healing cases, while in the stagnating ones opposite trend was manifest. In none of the groups were detected circulating auto-antibodies against the investigated antigens.

The authors studied the process of muscular regeneration on experimental models after simple muscle injury and under the effect of low-energy laser-irradiation. It is stated that the stimulating effect not only accelerated the wound healing, but most likely influenced also the qualitative improvement of regeneration.

The effect of laser beam on the survival of skin allotransplants has been studied. Irradiation of the donor skin and of the recipient graft bed improved the survival of the graft. The graft protecting effect of anti-thymocyte serum was considerably enhanced by laser irradiation.
