RESUMO

The nonresonant nonlinear optical response of bulk tellurium (Te) is studied using 220 fs 10 µm laser pulses with photon energy roughly three times smaller than the band gap energy. The Kerr nonlinearity is found to be extremely large (n2,eff = 3.0-6.0 × 10-12 cm2/W), nearly 100 times larger than that of GaAs, depending on crystal orientation. Multiphoton absorption is observed at intensities >109 W/cm2 indicating the importance of free carriers to the overall nonlinear optical response. The large values of the nonlinear susceptibilities of Te open up possibilities of designing thin film elements for mid- and long-wavelength infrared nonlinear photonics.

RESUMO

A comparative analysis of AgGaSe2, GaSe, CdGeAs2, and Te for second harmonic generation (SHG) of a picosecond CO2 laser at intensities up to 50 GW/cm2 is presented. We demonstrate external energy conversion efficiency of >20% in AgGaSe2. Conversion efficiency >5% is measured in GaSe and CdGeAs2. Self-focusing and multifilamentation are found to severely limit the SHG process in CdGeAs2 and Te at such high fields. Demonstration of ≥150 MW SH pulses for a 10 µm picosecond pump, in combination with femtosecond CO2 laser development, will open new strong-field applications in the 4.5-5.5 µm range.

RESUMO

Long-wave multi-joule ultrashort laser pulses are predicted to confine highly uniform electromagnetic energy and field intensities while sustaining high density uniform plasmas within nonlinear Bessel zones under extreme driving conditions in contrast to near-IR sources. This opens up novel applications in laser wakefield generation, radiofrequency/microwave guiding, and lightning control.

RESUMO

10 µm lasing is studied in a compact CO2-He cell pressurized up to 15 atm when optically pumped by a ∼50 mJ Fe:ZnSe laser tunable around 4.3 µm. The optimal pump wavelength and partial pressure of CO2 for generating 10 µm pulses are found to be ∼4.4 µm and 0.75 atm, respectively. Without cavity optimization, the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency reached ∼10% at a total pressure of 7 atm. The gain lifetime is measured to be ∼1 µs at pressures above 10 atm, indicating the feasibility of using high-pressure optically pumped CO2 for the efficient amplification of picosecond 10 µm pulses.

RESUMO

We study the nonlinear absorption of high-power 10 µm radiation propagating through n-Ge, GaAs, and ZnSe materials widely used in the long-wave infrared range. Measurements are performed using both nanosecond and picosecond CO2 laser pulses providing intensities up to 100MW/cm2 and 5GW/cm2, respectively. Nonlinear absorption coefficients in optical quality n-Ge are found to be the same for both pulse durations. The nonlinear absorption coefficient of these materials scales inverse proportionally to their bandgap energies, indicating increased photoionization in the smaller bandgap materials.

RESUMO

We identify a two-stage filamentation regime for high-power 10 µm multipicosecond pulses propagating in the atmosphere. The first low-intensity stage is mainly regularized by ionization through excitation induced dephasing, which can lead to strong pulse shortening downstream. This shortening in turn causes a significant reduction of the many-body induced plasma, which changes the dynamics drastically. As a result, a distinct second stage is predicted where peak intensities are clamped at 1 order of magnitude higher than in the first stage. The complex dynamics found in the second stage can result in the spatial and temporal breakup of the wavepacket, reduction of ionization losses, and extreme spectral broadening.

RESUMO

We have used multiframe picosecond optical interferometry to make direct measurements of the hole boring velocity, v_{HB}, of the density cavity pushed forward by a train of CO_{2} laser pulses in a near critical density helium plasma. As the pulse train intensity rises, the increasing radiation pressure of each pulse pushes the density cavity forward and the plasma electrons are strongly heated. After the peak laser intensity, the plasma pressure exerted by the heated electrons strongly impedes the hole boring process and the v_{HB} falls rapidly as the laser pulse intensity falls at the back of the laser pulse train. A heuristic theory is presented that allows the estimation of the plasma electron temperature from the measurements of the hole boring velocity. The measured values of v_{HB}, and the estimated values of the heated electron temperature as a function of laser intensity are in reasonable agreement with those obtained from two-dimensional numerical simulations.

RESUMO

A novel technique for low-temperature bonding of GaAs wafers using an interboundary Teflon film is developed. A fabricated stack of ten 25x25 mm2 diced wafers demonstrated 75% transmission of a 10 microm CO2 laser beam. Modeling of these Teflon-bonded (TB) structures as sequences of Fabry-Perot etalons gives a good agreement with transmission measurements. A 20x20 mm2 quasi-phase matched structure of five wafers pumped by CO2 laser lines generated the narrow-band THz radiation at a wavelength of 343 microm via a difference frequency mixing process.

RESUMO

A wavelength-independent method for optical gating, based on the optical Kerr effect, has been demonstrated. Using this method, we produced 100-ps, 10-kW, two-wavelength pulses (10.3 and 10.6 microm) with a signal-to-background ratio contrast of 10(5) by slicing a long CO2 pulse. The capability of gating consecutive pulses separated on a picosecond time scale with this method is also shown.
