RESUMO

The rationale of this paper is to shed some light on the origin of the optical response of two similar chiral fluorene copolymers in correlation with their vibrational modes, to understand how a chiral center placed in a ramification affects the optical properties of the main chain. Various spectroscopic ellipsometric techniques, in the scope of the Stokes theory were used to characterize the optical-vibrational behavior of the polyfluorenes: ellipsometry in emission (EE), transmission (TE), and Raman (ERS). The results showed that the optical activity and the emission of the circularly polarized light depends substantially on the interaction of the chiral carbon in the ramification and the main chain through specific optically active vibrational modes, for each sample. One interesting achievement was to find the absolute dextrorotatory configuration of the studied molecules, that could induce a helicoidal structure to the entire material.

RESUMO

Pulmonary disorders are common in horses, and treatment efficiency depends on an adequate diagnosis. Amyloid A is the most sensitive indicator of pathology in horses. The objective of this study was to establish the concentration of amyloid A of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in healthy horses. Health condition of horses was considered normal based on physical examination, complete blood count, biochemical parameters, and BALF cytology. Blood and BALF were collected from thirty adult female horses. Amyloid A concentrations in serum and BALF were measured using commercial ELISA tests. Amyloid A was detected in serum (mean ± SD = 3.71±2.51) and BALF (mean ± SD = 0.000745±0.000785) of all horses. In conclusion, SAA can also be measured in bronchoalveolar fluid, affording early detection of respiratory infections or inflammatory conditions.(AU)

Abstract Aim: To verify the acute effect of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) supplementation on performance during CrossFit® workout. Methods: Nine experienced males (30.8 ± 3.5 years; 84.4 ± 9.5 kg; 177.5 ± 4.03 cm; 2.2 ± 1.0 years) in CrossFit® participated in this study. They were allocated to two conditions: a) supplementation with 0.3 g.kg-1 of body weight of NaHCO3 and b) supplementation with 0.045 g.kg-1 of body weight of sodium chloride (NaCl). Blood lactate was analyzed at two different moments: before (lac-pre) and after the training protocol (lac-post). The heart rate (HR) and the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were also collected every two minutes during the execution of the training protocol, and the RPE was also collected after it was finished. At the end of the training protocol, a questionnaire to measure gastrointestinal side effects (GSE) was answered by the participants. Repetitions performed in the training protocol was computed to evaluate the performance during the workout. Results: The results showed that there were no differences found when comparing the conditions for all parameters. HR and RPE were different in the first few minutes (< 4-6 minutes) when compared to the final minutes (> 14 minutes) of the workout. The area under the curve of HR and RPE was significantly lower in the NaHCO3 condition. Conclusion: Acute NaHCO3 supplementation did not improve performance during workout 'Cindy' in experienced men. Supplementation also did not alter hemodynamic and perceptual parameters, nor did it cause any GSE. However, responses as a function of time were reduced with NaHCO3 supplementation.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Purpose: The objective of the present study is to test the efficiency and practicality of a new artificial sphincter "BR - SL - AS - 904" in the control of urinary incontinence in post - PR patients and to evaluate their complications. Patients and Methods: Fifteen patients with incontinence after one year of radical prostatectomy were included prospectively. All patients underwent artificial urethral sphincter (AUS) implant "BR - SL - AS - 904" according to established technique. Independent variables such as free urinary flow, PAD weight test, ICIQ - SF score and urinary symptoms through the IPSS score were compared in different follow-up moments. Results: Patients submitted to AUS implantation did not present trans - operative or post - operative complications related to the surgical act such as: infection, hematoma, erosion or urinary retention. Device was inert to the body during the follow-up, showing an excellent adaptation of the patients, besides the easy handling. The mean age was 68.20 years 40% of the patients had systemic arterial hypertension, 6.7% diabetes mellitus, 6.7% were hypertensive and diabetic, 13.4% were hypertensive, had diabetes and hypercholesterolemia and 26.7% patients had no comorbidities. It was evidenced that the urinary flow peak during the follow-up remained stable. Decreased averages and median PAD weight test were 135.19 to 75.72 and 106.00 to 23.50, respectively. The IPSS score decreased and the quality of life increased (12.33 to 3.40 and 2.50 to 3.20 respectively). The ICQF - SF questionnaire score also showed a decrease, ranging from 16, 71 to 7.33. Conclusion: The artificial sphincter implant "BR - SL - AS 904" was reproducible, safe and effective in the control of urinary incontinence in post - PR patients.

The authors reflect on the modifications of the family configuration in Brazil and in other countries, the continuing decline of the patriarchal familiy structure and the recent appearence of claims for the homoparental families rights. During the discussion regarding homoparentality, the authors resume the history of the use of the term homossexuality and of the "healing" techniques for homossexuality, and expose Freud's opinion regarding this matter, which is regarded as a rupture with the tradition of his time. The internal disputes of the psychoanalitical movement are also mentioned in two important moments: the discussions regarding the possibility of homossexuals having access to the psychoanalisys formation (in 1920) and the participation of psychoanalists in the elaboration of the Law Project regarding civil union of people of the same sex in Brazil.(AU)

RESUMO

In many countries, lipoplasty is the most frequently performed aesthetic procedure. It has been promoted as a safe, easy-to-learn, outpatient procedure. Although plastic surgeons have developed safety measures to perform the technique, there are serious risks, including death at a rate of 1/5000 procedures. Life-threatening complications include pulmonary embolism, hemorrhage, perforation, infection, lidocaine toxicity, epinephrine toxicity, third space fluid shifts, and fat embolism syndrome. Aesthetic complications include undercorrection (insufficient fat removal), overcorrection (excess fat removal), irregular fat removal with palpable and visible irregularities, edema, hematoma, seroma, local infection, cutaneous slough, hyperpigmentation, vasculopathies, and permanent color changes in the skin. In this article we present methods to prevent and, when possible, treat these complications.

RESUMO

In the last 20 years, several different techniques of lipoinjection have been developed. Nevertheless, a standard procedure has not been adopted by all practitioners. There is no agreement as to the best way of processing the fat to ensure maximal take and viability of the graft. Other controversial issues include the ideal cannula for harvesting and reinjection, the presence of blood in the transplanted fat, trauma, air exposure, contamination of the graft, durability, and fat cell survival. Newly emerging approaches to fat tissue engineering with the use of cultured autologous preadipocytes may improve the technique of fat injection and transplant.

RESUMO

Low-level laser-assisted liposuction (LLLL), known as the Neira 4 L technique, is an excellent adjuvant tool for the surgeon practicing liposculpture. A low-level laser is used to create a transitory pore in the cell membrane of the adipocyte to move fat from inside the cell to the interstitial space outside without killing the cell. LLLL has been performed successfully in in-vitro and human adipose tissue cultures. It protects the patient from the surgical trauma of liposuction by protecting and preparing tissues for the surgical trauma; modulating the inflammatory response to prevent short and long-term side effects of surgery; and improving the quality and quantity of the healing process by accelerating recovery time, modulating secondary cicatrization, and preventing postoperative neuralgias.

RESUMO

The aesthetic and functional treatment of the abdominal region has always been one of the main concerns of plastic surgeons. Some patients belong in a "gray area" where there is no clear indication of which technique should be applied. Individual variations in anatomy should be the first consideration in determining the correct procedure. The Type I abdomen can be treated by lipoplasty alone. Types II, III, and IV are considered to be in the "gray area," because we can use different approaches and techniques based not only on this classification system but also on patients' preferences. Types V and VI can be treated by dermolipectomy with or without lipoplasty.

RESUMO

Liposculpture with skin resection is a good option for patients who need skin resection in addition to fat aspiration. Excess skin is removed without undermining the fat layer, avoiding the seroma and skin necrosis sometimes associated with combined classic abdominoplasty and lipoplasty.(Aesthetic Surg J 2003;23:125-127).
