AIM: To identify new biomarkers to detect untreated and treated periodontitis in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) using sequential window acquisition of all theoretical mass spectra (SWATH-MS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: GCF samples were collected from 44 periodontally healthy subjects and 40 with periodontitis (Stages III-IV). In the latter, 25 improved clinically 2 months after treatment. Samples were analysed using SWATH-MS, and proteins were identified by the UniProt human-specific database. The diagnostic capability of the proteins was determined with generalized additive models to distinguish the three clinical conditions. RESULTS: In the untreated periodontitis vs. periodontal health modelling, five proteins showed excellent or good bias-corrected (bc)-sensitivity/bc-specificity values of >80%. These were GAPDH, ZG16B, carbonic anhydrase 1, plasma protease inhibitor C1 and haemoglobin subunit beta. GAPDH with MMP-9, MMP-8, zinc-α-2-glycoprotein and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and ZG16B with cornulin provided increased bc-sensitivity/bc-specificity of >95%. For distinguishing treated periodontitis vs. periodontal health, most of these proteins and their combinations revealed a predictive ability similar to previous modelling. No model obtained relevant results to differentiate between periodontitis conditions. CONCLUSIONS: New single and dual GCF protein biomarkers showed outstanding results in discriminating untreated and treated periodontitis from periodontal health. Periodontitis conditions were indistinguishable. Future research must validate these findings.

Current advances in the management of the autonomic nervous system in various cardiovascular diseases, and in treatments for pain or sympathetic disturbances in the head, neck, or upper limbs, necessitate a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the cervicothoracic sympathetic trunk. Our objective was to enhance our understanding of the origin and distribution of communicating branches and visceral cervicothoracic sympathetic nerves in human fetuses. This was achieved through a comprehensive topographic systematization of the branching patterns observed in the cervical and upper thoracic ganglia, along with the distribution of communicating branches to each cervical spinal nerve. We conducted detailed sub-macroscopic dissections of the cervical and thoracic regions in 20 human fetuses (40 sides). The superior and cervicothoracic ganglia were identified as the cervical sympathetic ganglia that provided the most communicating branches on both sides. The middle and accessory cervical ganglia contributed the fewest branches, with no significant differences between the right and left sides. The cervicothoracic ganglion supplied sympathetic branches to the greatest number of spinal nerves, spanning from C5 to T2 . The distribution of communicating branches to spinal nerves was non-uniform. Notably, C3 , C4 , and C5 received the fewest branches, and more than half of the specimens showed no sympathetic connections. C1 and C2 received sympathetic connections exclusively from the superior ganglion. Spinal nerves that received more branches often did so from multiple ganglia. The vertebral nerve provided deep communicating branches primarily to C6 , with lesser contributions to C7 , C5 , and C8 . The vagus nerve stood out as the cranial nerve with the most direct sympathetic connections. The autonomic branching pattern and connections of the cervicothoracic sympathetic trunk are significantly variable in the fetus. A comprehensive understanding of the anatomy of the cervical and upper thoracic sympathetic trunk and its branches is valuable during autonomic interventions and neuromodulation. This knowledge is particularly relevant for addressing various autonomic cardiac diseases and for treating pain and vascular dysfunction in the head, neck, and upper limbs.

BACKGROUND: The association of fitness with cancer risk is not clear. METHODS: We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for risk of lung, colorectal, endometrial, breast, and prostate cancer in a subset of UK Biobank participants who completed a submaximal fitness test in 2009-12 (N = 72,572). We also investigated relationships using two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR), odds ratios (ORs) were estimated using the inverse-variance weighted method. RESULTS: After a median of 11 years of follow-up, 4290 cancers of interest were diagnosed. A 3.5 ml O2⋅min-1⋅kg-1 total-body mass increase in fitness (equivalent to 1 metabolic equivalent of task (MET), approximately 0.5 standard deviation (SD)) was associated with lower risks of endometrial (HR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.73-0.89), colorectal (0.94, 0.90-0.99), and breast cancer (0.96, 0.92-0.99). In MR analyses, a 0.5 SD increase in genetically predicted O2⋅min-1⋅kg-1 fat-free mass was associated with a lower risk of breast cancer (OR = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.86-0.98). After adjusting for adiposity, both the observational and genetic associations were attenuated. DISCUSSION: Higher fitness levels may reduce risks of endometrial, colorectal, and breast cancer, though relationships with adiposity are complex and may mediate these relationships. Increasing fitness, including via changes in body composition, may be an effective strategy for cancer prevention.

Introducción: La lipomatosis epidural espinal es una enfermedad infrecuente caracterizada por el sobrecrecimiento del tejido adiposo no encapsulado dentro del espacio epidural. Esto genera una estenosis del conducto espinal que puede provocar sintomatología compresiva. La presentación típica es insidiosa a lo largo de meses o años. El objetivo de este estudio fue realizar un análisis descriptivo de la manifestación clínica inicial en pacientes con lipomatosis epidural espinal grado III de Naka. Materiales y métodos: Estudio observacional retrospectivo en la Unidad de Patología Espinal de 4 instituciones, de 2010 a 2023. Se incluyó a pacientes >18 años, de ambos sexos, que acudieron por dolor lumbar con irradiación o sin irradiación, y presentaban lipomatosis lumbar Naka III en la resonancia magnética. Resultados: Se incorporó a 40 pacientes (edad promedio 62.5 años). El 75% era obeso, ninguno era fumador. El motivo de consulta más frecuente fue lumbalgia, con una mediana de evolución del dolor de 5.5 meses. Conclusiones:La lumbalgia fue la consulta más frecuente, con excepción del compromiso de L3-S1 que fue la lumbocruralgia. Los pacientes que sufrieron dolor más tiempo (>6 meses) eran más jóvenes y tenían un índice de masa corporal menor; sin embargo, no resultó estadísticamente significativo. Nivel de Evidencia: IV


Introduction: Spinal epidural lipomatosis (SEL) is a rare pathology characterized by the overgrowth of nonencapsulated adipose tissue within the epidural space. This generates spinal stenosis, which might result in compression symptoms. The typical presentation is insidious pain that lasts months or years. The objective of this study was to carry out a descriptive analysis of the initial clinical signs of patients with Naka's grade III lumbar SEL. materials and methods: Retrospective observational study in the Spinal Pathology Unit of 4 institutions, from 2010 to 2023. Patients over the age of 18, of both sexes, who consulted for low back pain with or without radiation and presented Naka's grade III lumbar lipomatosis on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were included. Results: We included 40 patients, with a mean age of 62.5 years; 75% were obese, there were no smokers. The most frequent reason for consultation was low back pain, with a median duration of 5.5 months. Conclusions: The most common reason for consultation was low back pain, with the exception of L3-S1 level involvement, which caused lumbar pain with radiation to the thigh. Patients with a longer period of pain (>6 months) were younger and had a lower BMI; although this was not statistically significant. Level of Evidence: IV

OBJECTIVE: With the advent of immunotherapy, there has been a significant improvement in the outcomes of non-small cell lung cancer treatment. Several clinical trials have confirmed the efficacy and safety of pembrolizumab, but research with real-world data is needed to confirm the findings from clinical trials. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, data on the treatment of lung cancer with pembrolizumab were analyzed in 78 patients who started pembrolizumab therapy as first-line treatment for metastatic disease at University Hospital Centre Osijek, from May 15, 2018, until December 31, 2021. November 30, 2022, was set as the last date of data monitoring. Patients who had received less than 3 cycles of pembrolizumab were excluded from the study. The main objectives of the study were OS (overall survival) and PFS (progression-free survival). The differences in the incidence and type of adverse events between the two groups of patients were also compared. RESULTS: Kaplan-Meier analysis of the survival determined that the median OS was 20 months and PFS was 13 months. Although OS and PFS are longer in patients with PD-L1 (programmed death-ligand 1) ≥ 50%, the differences are not statistically significant. The most commonly reported adverse events related to pembrolizumab treatment were gastrointestinal adverse events. No significant differences were found in the frequency of occurrence of certain adverse events between the two groups of patients. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that real-world data for pembrolizumab treatment of non-small cell lung cancer confirm the efficacy and safety indicated by clinical trials. Nevertheless, it is necessary to assess the patient's general condition more objectively before starting the treatment.

AIM: To determine the accuracy of biomarker combinations in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva through meta-analysis to diagnose periodontitis in systemically healthy subjects. METHODS: Studies on combining two or more biomarkers providing a binary classification table, sensitivity/specificity values or group sizes in subjects diagnosed with periodontitis were included. The search was performed in August 2022 through PUBMED, EMBASE, Cochrane, LILACS, SCOPUS and Web of Science. The methodological quality of the articles selected was evaluated using the QUADAS-2 checklist. Hierarchical summary receiver operating characteristic modelling was employed to perform the meta-analyses (CRD42020175021). RESULTS: Twenty-one combinations in GCF and 47 in saliva were evaluated. Meta-analyses were possible for six salivary combinations (median sensitivity/specificity values): IL-6 with MMP-8 (86.2%/80.5%); IL-1ß with IL-6 (83.0%/83.7%); IL-1ß with MMP-8 (82.7%/80.8%); MIP-1α with MMP-8 (71.0%/75.6%); IL-1ß, IL-6 and MMP-8 (81.8%/84.3%); and IL-1ß, IL-6, MIP-1α and MMP-8 (76.6%/79.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Two-biomarker combinations in oral fluids show high diagnostic accuracy for periodontitis, which is not substantially improved by incorporating more biomarkers. In saliva, the dual combinations of IL-1ß, IL-6 and MMP-8 have an excellent ability to detect periodontitis and a good capacity to detect non-periodontitis. Because of the limited number of biomarker combinations evaluated, further research is required to corroborate these observations.

BACKGROUND: The effect of cymenol mouthwashes on levels of dental plaque has not been evaluated thus far. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the short-term, in situ, anti-plaque effect of a 0.1% cymenol mouthwash using the DenTiUS Deep Plaque software. METHODS: Fifty orally healthy participants were distributed randomly into two groups: 24 received a cymenol mouthwash for eight days (test group A) and 26 a placebo mouthwash for four days and a cymenol mouthwash for a further four days thereafter (test group B). They were instructed not to perform other oral hygiene measures. On days 0, 4, and 8 of the experiment, a rinsing protocol for staining the dental plaque with sodium fluorescein was performed. Three intraoral photographs were taken per subject under ultraviolet light. The 504 images were analysed using the DenTiUS Deep Plaque software, and visible and total plaque indices were calculated (ClinicalTrials ID NCT05521230). RESULTS: On day 4, the percentage area of visible plaque was significantly lower in test group A than in test group B (absolute = 35.31 ± 14.93% vs. 46.57 ± 18.92%, p = 0.023; relative = 29.80 ± 13.97% vs. 40.53 ± 18.48%, p = 0.024). In comparison with the placebo, the cymenol mouthwash was found to have reduced the growth rate of the area of visible plaque in the first four days by 26% (absolute) to 28% (relative). On day 8, the percentage areas of both the visible and total plaque were significantly lower in test group A than in test group B (visible absolute = 44.79 ± 15.77% vs. 65.12 ± 16.37%, p < 0.001; visible relative = 39.27 ± 14.33% vs. 59.24 ± 16.90%, p < 0.001; total = 65.17 ± 9.73% vs. 74.52 ± 13.55%, p = 0.007). Accounting for the growth rate with the placebo mouthwash on day 4, the above results imply that the cymenol mouthwash in the last four days of the trial reduced the growth rate of the area of visible plaque (absolute and relative) by 53% (test group A) and 29% (test group B), and of the area of total plaque by 48% (test group A) and 41% (test group B). CONCLUSIONS: The 0.1% cymenol mouthwash has a short-term anti-plaque effect in situ, strongly conditioning the rate of plaque growth, even in clinical situations with high levels of dental plaque accumulation.

The incidence and severity of global mangrove mortality due to drought is increasing. Yet, little is understood of the capacity of mangroves to show long-term acclimation of leaf water relations to severe drought. We tested for differences between mid-dry season leaf water relations in two cooccurring mangroves, Aegiceras corniculatum and Rhizophora stylosa before a severe drought (a heatwave combined with low rainfall) and after its relief by the wet season. Consistent with ecological stress memory, the legacy of severe drought enhanced salinity tolerance in the subsequent dry season through coordinated adjustments that reduced the leaf water potential at the turgor loss point and increased cell wall rigidity. These adjustments enabled maintenance of turgor and relative water content with increasing salinity. As most canopy growth occurs during the wet season, acclimation to the 'memory' of higher salinity in the previous dry season enables greater leaf function with minimal adjustments, as long-lived leaves progress from wet through dry seasons. However, declining turgor safety margins - the difference between soil water potential and leaf water potential at turgor loss - implied increasing limitation to water use with increasing salinity. Thus, plasticity in leaf water relations contributes fundamentally to mangrove function under varying salinity regimes.

INTRODUCTION: Few large studies have evaluated the relationship between resting heart rate (RHR) and cardiorespiratory fitness. Here we examine cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between RHR and fitness, explore factors that influence these relationships, and demonstrate the utility of RHR for remote population monitoring. METHODS: In cross-sectional analyses (The UK Fenland Study: 5,722 women, 5,143 men, aged 29-65y), we measured RHR (beats per min, bpm) while seated, supine, and during sleep. Fitness was estimated as maximal oxygen consumption (ml⋅min-1⋅kg-1) from an exercise test. Associations between RHR and fitness were evaluated while adjusting for age, sex, adiposity, and physical activity. In longitudinal analyses (6,589 participant subsample), we re-assessed RHR and fitness after a median of 6 years and evaluated the association between within-person change in RHR and fitness. During the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic, we used a smartphone application to remotely and serially measure RHR (1,914 participant subsample, August 2020 to April 2021) and examined differences in RHR dynamics by pre-pandemic fitness level. RESULTS: Mean RHR while seated, supine, and during sleep was 67, 64, and 57 bpm. Age-adjusted associations (beta coefficients) between RHR and fitness were -0.26, -0.29, and -0.21 ml⋅kg-1⋅beat-1 in women and -0.27, -0.31, and -0.19 ml⋅kg-1⋅beat-1 in men. Adjustment for adiposity and physical activity attenuated the RHR-to-fitness relationship by 10% and 50%, respectively. Longitudinally, a 1-bpm increase in supine RHR was associated with a 0.23 ml⋅min-1⋅kg-1 decrease in fitness. During the pandemic, RHR increased in those with low pre-pandemic fitness but was stable in others. CONCLUSIONS: RHR is a valid population-level biomarker of cardiorespiratory fitness. Physical activity and adiposity attenuate the relationship between RHR and fitness.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is rarely measured in population studies. Most studies of CRF do not examine differences by population subgroups or seasonal trends. We examined how estimated CRF levels vary by anthropometric, sociodemographic, and behavioral characteristics in a population-based cohort of UK adults (the Fenland Study). METHODS: We used a validated submaximal exercise test to obtain CRF estimates (CRF estimated ) in 5976 women and 5316 men, residing in the East of England. CRF estimated was defined as estimated maximal oxygen consumption per kilogram total body mass (V̇O 2 max tbm ) and fat-free mass (V̇O 2 max ffm ). Descriptive statistics were computed across anthropometric and sociodemographic characteristics, and across the year. Progressive multivariable analyses were performed to examine associations with physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: Mean ± SD V̇O 2 max tbm was lower in women (35.2 ± 7.5 mL·min -1 ·kg -1 ) than men (41.7 ± 7.3 mL·min -1 ·kg -1 ) but V̇O 2 max ffm was similar (women: 59.2 ± 11.6 mL·min -1 ·kg -1 ; men: 62.0 ± 10.3 mL·min -1 ·kg -1 ). CRF estimated was inversely associated with age but not after adjustment for PAEE. People in more physically demanding jobs were fitter compared with those in sedentary jobs, but this association was attenuated in women and reversed in men after adjustment for total PAEE. Physical activity energy expenditure and BMI were positively associated with CRF estimated at all levels of adjustment when expressed relative to fat-free mass. CRF estimated was 4% higher in summer than in winter among women, but did not differ by season among men. CONCLUSIONS: CRF estimated was inversely associated with age but less steeply than anticipated, suggesting older generations are comparatively fitter than younger generations. Physical activity energy expenditure and BMI were stronger determinants of the variance in CRF estimated than other characteristic including age. This emphasizes the importance of modifiable physical activity behaviors in public health interventions.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between accelerometer-derived physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) and incident type 2 diabetes (T2D) in a cohort of middle-aged adults and within subgroups. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were from 90,096 UK Biobank participants without prevalent diabetes (mean 62 years of age; 57% women) who wore a wrist accelerometer for 7 days. PAEE was derived from wrist acceleration using a population-specific method validated against doubly labeled water. Logistic regressions were used to assess associations between PAEE, its underlying intensity, and incident T2D, ascertained using hospital episode and mortality data up to November 2020. Models were progressively adjusted for demographic, lifestyle factors, and BMI. RESULTS: The association between PAEE and T2D was approximately linear (n = 2,018 events). We observed 19% (95% CI 17-21) lower odds of T2D per 5 kJ · kg-1 · day-1 in PAEE without adjustment for BMI and 11% (9-13) with BMI adjustment. The association was stronger in men than women and weaker in those with obesity and higher genetic susceptibility to obesity. There was no evidence of effect modification by genetic susceptibility to T2D or insulin resistance. For a given level of PAEE, odds of T2D were lower among those engaging in more moderate-to-vigorous activity. CONCLUSIONS: There was a strong linear relationship between PAEE and incident T2D. A difference in PAEE equivalent to an additional daily 20-min brisk walk was associated with 19% lower odds of T2D. The association was broadly similar across population subgroups, supporting physical activity for diabetes prevention in the whole population.

Embolism refilling is thought to require relaxation of xylem tension, and it is unclear whether and how tall trees or plants growing in arid or saline soils recover from embolism. We tested whether foliar water uptake could enable embolism refilling in dehydrated twigs of the grey mangrove (Avicennia marina). Four dehydrated twigs were imaged by laboratory-based micro-computed tomography before and after wetting leaves. Emboli were observed in dehydrated stems and leaves. Embolism decreased with increasing distance from the cut end of stems, suggesting that stem emboli were caused by cutting. A significant (P = 0.026) c. 80% reduction in the embolised area was observed in leaves between the start and the end of the experiment (29 ± 10 h after wetting). Embolus diameter was unaffected by wetting. Embolism refilling occurred slowly, in stems embolised by cutting and leaves embolised by cutting and/or dehydration. The lack of response of embolus diameter to wetting suggests that capillarity was not the main mechanism for refilling. Results show that excised twigs of A. marina are able to recover from embolism by absorption of atmospheric water and call for studies under natural conditions.

Cardiorespiratory fitness is an established predictor of metabolic disease and mortality. Fitness is directly measured as maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), or indirectly assessed using heart rate responses to standard exercise tests. However, such testing is costly and burdensome because it requires specialized equipment such as treadmills and oxygen masks, limiting its utility. Modern wearables capture dynamic real-world data which could improve fitness prediction. In this work, we design algorithms and models that convert raw wearable sensor data into cardiorespiratory fitness estimates. We validate these estimates' ability to capture fitness profiles in free-living conditions using the Fenland Study (N=11,059), along with its longitudinal cohort (N = 2675), and a third external cohort using the UK Biobank Validation Study (N = 181) who underwent maximal VO2max testing, the gold standard measurement of fitness. Our results show that the combination of wearables and other biomarkers as inputs to neural networks yields a strong correlation to ground truth in a holdout sample (r = 0.82, 95CI 0.80-0.83), outperforming other approaches and models and detects fitness change over time (e.g., after 7 years). We also show how the model's latent space can be used for fitness-aware patient subtyping paving the way to scalable interventions and personalized trial recruitment. These results demonstrate the value of wearables for fitness estimation that today can be measured only with laboratory tests.

This study investigates the role of winter oceanographic conditions on the horizontal and vertical spatial structure of Pyrosoma atlanticum at different ontogenetic stages. Data were obtained on two oceanographic cruises (February 2017 and 2018) in the NW Mediterranean. Small colonies were exceptionally abundant in 2017, linked to an earlier development of spring conditions and the subsequent seasonal phytoplankton bloom. The mesoscale distribution of P. atlanticum differed depending on the colony size. Large colonies (≥7 mm) were found on the slope all along the density front, whereas small (<4 mm) and medium colonies (4-6.9 mm) extended their distribution over the shelf because of instabilities of the front, and were mostly absent in the cold, low-salinity coastal waters. The analysis of their vertical distribution showed that at night colonies of all sizes remained close to the surface, where chlorophyll-a levels were high, whereas during the day they migrated to deeper layers, reaching greater depths as the colony size increased. The migratory behaviour started when colonies were 4-6.9 mm long. The relative importance of the species in the downward carbon transport is discussed. Our results highlight the need to further study the ecology of this efficient filter feeder in the Mediterranean.

Turgor pressure is an essential, but difficult to measure indicator of plant water status. Turgor has been quantified by localized compression of cells or tissues, but a simple method to perform these measurements is lacking. We hypothesized that changes in leaf turgidity can be monitored by uniaxially compressing the leaf lamina and measuring the mechanical stress under a constrained thickness (stress relaxation) and that changes in leaf water content can be monitored by measuring the leaf thickness under constant mechanical stress. Using a simple, custom-built leaf squeeze-flow rheometer, we performed different compression tests on leaves from 13 plant species. The mechanical stress measured during stress relaxation was correlated with leaf bulk turgor pressure (R2 > 0.95) and thus with balancing pressure (R2 > 0.94); the leaf thickness measured under constant mechanical stress was correlated with relative water content (R2 > 0.74). The coefficients of these relationships were related to the leaf bulk osmotic pressure at the turgor-loss point. An idealized average-cell model suggests that, under isothermal conditions, the stationary bulk modulus during compression is largely determined by the bulk osmotic pressure. Our study presents an inexpensive, accessible and automatable method to monitor plant water status noninvasively.

Ecological communities are constantly exposed to multiple natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Multivariate composition (if recovered) has been found to need significantly more time to be regained after pulsed disturbance compared to univariate diversity metrics and functional endpoints. However, the mechanisms driving the different recovery times of communities to single and multiple disturbances remain unexplored. Here, we apply quantitative ecological network analyses to try to elucidate the mechanisms driving long-term community-composition dissimilarity and late-stage disturbance interactions at the community level. For this, we evaluate the effects of two pesticides, nutrient enrichment, and their interactions in outdoor mesocosms containing a complex freshwater community. We found changes in interactions strength to be strongly related to compositional changes and identified postdisturbance interaction-strength rewiring to be responsible for most of the observed compositional changes. Additionally, we found pesticide interactions to be significant in the long term only when both interaction strength and food-web architecture are reshaped by the disturbances. We suggest that quantitative network analysis has the potential to unveil ecological processes that prevent long-term community recovery.

Food web structure plays an important role in determining ecosystem stability against perturbations. High-latitude marine ecosystems are being affected by environmental stressors and biological invasions. In the West Antarctic Peninsula these transformations are mainly driven by climate change, while in the sub-Antarctic region by anthropogenic activities. Understanding the differences between these areas is necessary to monitor the changes that are expected to occur in the upcoming decades. Here, we compared the structure and stability of Antarctic (Potter Cove) and sub-Antarctic (Beagle Channel) marine food webs. We compiled species trophic interactions (predator-prey) and calculated complexity, structure and stability metrics. Even if both food webs presented the same connectance, we found important differences between them. The Beagle Channel food web is more complex, but less stable and sensitive to the loss of its most connected species, while the Potter Cove food web presented lower complexity and greater stability against perturbations.

Local food webs result from a sequence of colonisations and extinctions by species from the regional pool or metaweb, that is, the assembly process. Assembly is theorised to be a selective process: whether or not certain species or network structures can persist is partly determined by local processes including habitat filtering and dynamical constraints. Consequently, local food web structure should reflect these processes. The goal of this study was to test evidence for these selective processes by comparing the structural properties of real food webs to the expected distribution given the metaweb. We were particularly interested in ecological dynamics; if the network properties commonly associated with dynamical stability are indeed the result of stability constraints, then they should deviate from expectation in the direction predicted by theory. To create a null expectation, we used the novel approach of randomly assembling model webs by drawing species and interactions from the empirical metaweb. The assembly model permitted colonisation and extinction, and required a consumer species to have at least one prey, but had no habitat type nor population dynamical constraints. Three datasets were used: (a) the marine Antarctic metaweb, with two local food webs; (b) the 50 lakes of the Adirondacks; and (c) the arthropod community from Florida Keys' classic defaunation experiment. Contrary to our expectations, we found that there were almost no differences between empirical webs and those resulting from the null assembly model. Few empirical food webs showed significant differences with network properties, motif representations and topological roles. Network properties associated with stability did not deviate from expectation in the direction predicted by theory. Our results suggest that-for the commonly used metrics we considered-local food web structure is not strongly influenced by dynamical nor habitat restrictions. Instead, the structure is inherited from the metaweb. This suggests that the network properties typically attributed as causes or consequences of ecological stability are instead a by-product of the assembly process (i.e. spandrels), and may potentially be too coarse to detect the true signal of dynamical constraint.


Las redes tróficas locales son el resultado de una secuencia de eventos de colonización y extinción de especies que provienen del conjunto regional de especies o metaweb, es decir, el proceso de ensamble. Se teoriza que el ensamble es un proceso selectivo: si ciertas especies o estructuras de red pueden persistir o no está determinado en parte por procesos locales, incluido el filtrado del hábitat y las limitaciones dinámicas. En consecuencia, la estructura de la red trófica local debe reflejar estos procesos. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la evidencia de estos procesos selectivos comparando las propiedades estructurales de redes tróficas empíricas (locales) con la distribución esperada dada la metaweb. Nuestro particular interés fue la dinámica ecológica: si las propiedades de la red comúnmente asociadas con la estabilidad dinámica son el resultado de restricciones de estabilidad, entonces deberían desviarse de las expectativas en la dirección predicha por la teoría. Se utilizaron tres conjuntos de datos: (a) la metaweb antártica marina, con 2 redes tróficas locales; (b) los 50 lagos de Adirondacks; y (c) la comunidad de artrópodos del experimento clásico de defaunación de los Cayos de la Florida. Contrariamente a lo esperado, encontramos que casi no hubo diferencias entre las redes empíricas (locales) y las resultantes del modelo de ensamble nulo. Pocas redes tróficas empíricas mostraron diferencias significativas con las propiedades de la red, los motivos y los roles topológicos. Las propiedades de la red asociadas con la estabilidad no se desviaron de las expectativas en la dirección predicha por la teoría. Nuestros resultados sugieren que-para las métricas de uso común que consideramos-la estructura de la red trófica local no está fuertemente influenciada por restricciones dinámicas o de hábitat.
