RESUMO

Introduction and Aim: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a noninflammatory joint disease. If OA of the knee causes pain, decreased muscle strength and joint stiffness, exercise therapy is one of the most effective treatments for the disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of aquatherapy on pain intensity and performance in women with OA with the assumption that it causes weightlessness. Methods: This is a quasiexperimental study. The sample size included 60 people who were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The visual analogue scale was used to assess pain and timed up and go test (TUG), 30 Second Sit to Stand Test (30-S-CS), and 40-meter fast-paced walk test (40 MW) were used to assess performance. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS ver. 22. Results: The results of the present study showed a decrease in pain intensity from moderate to mild intensity. Also, physical performance dimensions in patients with OA were improved, so that the average TUG increased from 14.06 to 8.8 s. The average S-CS frequency increased from 4.86 to 8.4 s and 90 MW decreased from the average 93.43 to 72.66 s. Discussion and Conclusion: Lower limb muscle strength, and physical performance can be improved and pain intensity can be reduced in patients with OA by performing aquatherapy three times a week for 8 weeks.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Prognostic nutritional index (PNI) is an indicator of immunonutritional status. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between PNI and overall survival in patients with brain metastases. METHODS: A total of 257 patients with histologically confirmed brain metastasis who underwent surgery at our center between April 2011 and April 2021 were investigated retrospectively.Demographic, clinical, and radiologic data of all cases were extracted. Patients were divided into the low PNI group(PNI <45) (malnutrition status) and the high PNI group (PNI ≥45)(normal nutritional status). Survival analyses were performed using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using the log-rank test. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using the Cox proportional hazards method. RESULTS: From the 257 cases of brain metastases, there were 148 (57.6%) males and 109 (42.4%) females. The mean age was 57.02 ± 8.7. The median overall survival was 13 months. The results of the multivariate Cox regression analyses showed primary cancer site (HR 2.196, 95% CI 1.988-6.52605, P = 0.000), the number of metastases (HR 1.829, 95% CI 1.380-2.872, P = 0.037), extracranial involvement (HR 2.186, 95% CI 1.213-4.171, P = 0.026), adjuvant radiotherapy (HR 2.823, 95% CI 1.187-5.415, P = 0.017) and PNI (HR 1.961, 95% CI 1.168-3.515, P = 0.021) as the independent predictors of overall survival in patients with brain metastases. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that PNI could be associated with survival in patients with brain metastases. Patients with a lower PNI had a significantly worse outcome in comparison with those with a higher PNI. Evaluation of PNI may provide additional prognostic information in patients with brain metastases.

RESUMO

Background and objective: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic neurological disease causing debilitating physical symptoms and a reduced quality of life, which incurs staggering costs of treatment not only to patients and their family but also to the healthcare system. Thus, getting familiar with the prevalence of this disease is considered essential for developing screening programs. Method:This is a descriptive analytical cross-sectional study. Samples were chosen via the census sampling method. The investigation was based on data provided by the unit of special diseases of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences. Data were collected via a predesigned checklist and further analyzed by SPSS 24 software. Results:A total of 1426 patients who developed MS between 2009 and 2019 and had archived medical files in the center of special diseases of Kermanshah medical sciences were studied. Among all MS participants, the ratio of female to male participants was 1.5:1, and 52.14% (n=747) of all studied patients were persons aged over 60 years. Discussion and conclusion:Based on our findings and patients' data provided by the center of special diseases of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, it can be stated that Kermanshah is one of the regions with a high prevalence of MS. This necessitates intervention by the healthcare system of Kermanshah province for screening and controlling the disease.

RESUMO

Introduction and aim:Coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) is a viral disease that appeared in late 2019 in China. Different factors can cause psychological problems in Covid-19 patients. Stress is one of the most common problems in people with communicable diseases. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between stress and the severity of symptoms and sleep quality in Covid-19 patients. Methods:This was a descriptive-analytical study. The sample size included 300 Covid-19 patients. Demographic information form, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and researcher-made questionnaire were used to collect data. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS ver.16. Results:The majority of participants obtained a stress score between 4 and 6 (moderate). Most of them felt stressed regarding the risk of transmitting the disease to their family members (63%) and more than half (56.3%) had the highest stress level during the first week of the disease because they were frightened by the Covid-19 infection and its prognosis. With regard to sleep, most participants had between six and 10 hours of sleep (53.7%). Conclusion:The results of the present study showed that perceived stress among Covid-19 patients had a direct effect on the severity of respiratory and neurological symptoms and affected their sleep quality.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was a health emergency for the world in which started in 2019. Various factors are involved in the pathogenesis of this virus, including age, gender, body mass index (BMI), the type of diet, the degree of observance of health protocols, and the health status of people. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status and health behaviors of patients infected with COVID-19. METHODS: A descriptive-analytical research method was used in this study. One of the outpatient centers for the patients infected with COVID-19 in Kermanshah was selected as the research setting. The study population included all patients infected with COVID-19 and the sample size was 200 people. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 22. RESULTS: Most patients (51%) were females and most of them suffered from body aches (81%) and headaches (94%). Most of the patients (76%) did not use a mask. Regarding the nutritional status, a large number of patients used all food groups such as carbohydrates, proteins, fruits, and vegetables less than the standard amount. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that people with underlying diseases are more prone to the disease than others and adherence to social distancing and mask use helps a lot to control the disease. In addition, the appropriate intake of food groups reduces the severity of the disease by strengthening the immune system in people.
