RESUMO

There is a striking disparity between the number of individuals with significant mental health concerns and those who are able to access care globally. One promising solution to expanding the mental health taskforce is task-sharing, or employing nonspecialists in the delivery of evidence-based interventions. Behavioral activation (BA), a brief intervention that focuses on scheduling rewarding activities into one's daily life, may have promise for delivery using task-sharing approaches due to its straightforward, flexible nature. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the current state of the literature on non-specialist-delivered BA and evaluate the evidence base of this approach. Three databases (Pubmed, PsycInfo, and Cochrane) were searched, and all articles were screened for inclusion criteria by two research assistants, included the review of titles, abstracts, and full-text. The final dataset consisted of 13 research studies, represented through 15 articles. A meta-analysis was conducted to examine the overall pooled effects of peer-delivered BA on depressive symptoms (the most widely examined clinical outcome). Studies reported on effectiveness and implementation outcomes of non-specialist-delivered BA for depression, substance use, loneliness, trauma survivors, and individuals with comorbid physical health conditions. Results provide initial support for the effectiveness of BA utilizing a task-sharing approach, and highlight the feasibility and acceptability of using nonspecialists to deliver BA in a variety of contexts, including low-resource settings.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Preeclampsia (PE) is one of common pregnancy diseases, which has seriously threatened the health of the gravidas. Although upregulated miR-269-3p has been found in the placentas of the patients with PE, the regulation mechanisms of miR-296-3p remain unclear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, the placentas of the patients and normal gravidas were used to observe the difference in miR-296-3p expression level, and HTR-8/Svneo and JAR cells were used to investigate the role of miR296-3p in trophoblast cells. Besides, qRT-PCR, Western blot, CCK-8 assay, Dual-Luciferase reporter gene assay and transwell assay were used to explore the functions and regulation mechanisms of miR-296-3p on PE. RESULTS: The results showed that miR-296-3p was upregulated in the PE-placentas, and increased miR-296-3p could inhibit the proliferation, invasion and migration of HTR-8/Svneo and JAR cells. Besides, miR-296-3p could directly target the 3'-UTR of CEMIP, and the phenomena induced by increased miR-296-3p, including decreased ß-catenin and p-AKT and weakened proliferation, invasion and migration abilities, could be reversed by upregulating the expression level of CEMIP. CONCLUSIONS: To summarize, this study suggests that miR-296-3p inactivates the Wnt/ß-catenin and PI3K/AKT pathways to promote the progression of PE via targeting the CEMIP.

RESUMO

Photoexcited dihydronicotinamides like NADH and analogues have been found to generate alkyl radicals upon reductive decarboxylation of redox-active esters without auxiliary photocatalysts. This principle allowed aliphatic photocoupling between redox-active carboxylate derivatives and electron-poor olefins, displaying surprising water and air-tolerance and unusually high coupling rates in dilute conditions. The orthogonality of the reaction in the presence of other carboxylic acids and its utility in the functionalization of DNA is presented, notably using visible light in combination with NADH, the ubiquitous reductant of life.

RESUMO

Rubazonic acids are a class of dyes that are long-known, but studies on their syntheses and uses are rare. We now describe an experimentally simple and highly practical one-pot procedure for their synthesis starting from easily accessible 1H-pyrazol-5(4H)-ones. This protocol provides direct access to a broad range of the desired rubazonic acid derivatives through oxidative diazidation combined with a reductive work-up, without the need to isolate the potentially hazardous diazido compounds generated en route the target compounds. We also show how more challenging variants of rubazonic acid are efficiently prepared using an alternative two-step procedure and controlled hydrogenation conditions.

RESUMO

A new synthetic route toward the tetrazole core is described, which is based on a general fragmentation pattern that was found in a range of compounds featuring geminal diazido units. Through a simple two-step procedure, the synthesis of structurally diverse target compounds containing a tetrazole, such as tetrazoloquinoxalinones, benzoylaryltetrazoles, tetrazolotriazinones, and tetrazoloazepinones, was easily accomplished, starting from broadly accessible substrates (i.e., oxindoles, diarylethanones, pyrazolones, and phenanthrols). The initial oxidative diazidation reaction with iodine and sodium azide under mild conditions is followed by the thermal fragmentation under microwave irradiation, leading to the tetrazole products. Noteworthy, an experimental solution is presented in which the potentially hazardous diazide intermediates are not isolated and the concentration of crude reaction mixtures containing diazides is not required to achieve the tetrazoles in good yields.

RESUMO

Can Gio district is located in the coastal area of Ho Chi Minh City, southern Vietnam. Discharge of wastewater from Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces to the rivers of Can Gio has led to concerns about the accumulation of trace metals (As, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the coastal sediments. The main objective of this study was to assess the distribution of As, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn in surface and core sediments and to evaluate the contamination status in relation to local background values, as well as the potential release of these selected trace metals from sediments to the water environment. Sediment characteristization, including determination of fine fraction, pH, organic matter, and major elements (Al, Fe, Ca, K, Mg, and S), was carried out to investigate which parameters affect the trace metal enrichment. Fine fraction and Al contents were found to be the controlling proxies affecting the distribution of trace metals while other sediment characteristics did not show any clear influence on trace metals' distribution. Although As concentrations in the sediments were much higher compared to its reference value in other areas, the enrichment factor based on local background values suggests minor contamination of this element as well as for Cr, Cu, and Pb. Risk assessment suggested a medium to very high risk of Mn, Zn, and Ni under acidification. Of importance is also that trace metals in sediments were not easily mobilized by organic complexation based on their low extractabilities by ammonium-EDTA extraction.

RESUMO

A concept for site selective acylation of poly-hydroxylated substrates is presented where polymer-supported catalysts are employed: catalytically active DMAP units were combined with a library of small molecule peptides attached to the solid phase with the goal to identify substrate-optimized catalysts through library screening. For selected examples, we demonstrate how the optimized catalysts can convert "their" substrate with a markedly enhanced site-selectivity, compared to only DMAP. Due to the solid support, product purification is significantly simplified, and the peptidic catalysts can be easily reused in multiple cycles while conserving its efficiency.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As the world population grows towards 9 billion by 2050, it is projected that food production will need to increase by 60%. A critical part of this growth includes the safe and effective use of insecticides to reduce the estimated 20-49% loss of global crop yields owing to pests. The development of new insecticides will help to sustain this protection and overcome insecticide resistance. RESULTS: A novel class of mesoionic compounds has been discovered, with exceptional insecticidal activity on a range of Hemiptera and Lepidoptera. These compounds bind to the orthosteric site of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and result in a highly potent inhibitory action at the receptor with minimal agonism. The synthesis, biological activity, optimization and mode of action will be discussed. CONCLUSION: Triflumezopyrim insect control will provide a powerful tool for control of hopper species in rice throughout Asia. Dicloromezotiaz can provide a useful control tool for lepidopteran pests, with an underexploited mode of action among these pests. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

A novel class of mesoionic pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidinones has been discovered with exceptional insecticidal activity controlling a number of insect species, particularly hemiptera and lepidoptera. Mode-of-action studies showed that they act on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) primarily as inhibitors. Here we report the discovery, evolution, and preparation of this class of chemistry. Our efforts in structure-activity relationship elucidation and biological activity evaluation are also presented.

RESUMO

Geminal diazides constitute a rare class of compounds where only a limited number of methods are available for their synthesis. We present the reaction of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds (as exemplified by malonates, 3-oxoesters, and 1,3-diketones) with molecular iodine and sodium azide in aqueous DMSO providing a general access to geminal diazides. A broad range of geminal diazides with various structural motifs including sterically demanding substituents and ordinary functional groups were synthesized, and it was shown that the diazidation of 1,3-dicarbonyls can be selectively achieved even in the presence of other 1,3-dicarbonyls with substituents at 2-position. Additionally, several diazides were studied regarding their thermal stability.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nail salons represent a rapidly growing industry with mainly Vietnamese immigrant workers. Workers routinely handle nail products containing hazardous compounds, yet have limited accessible information to minimize workplace exposures. METHODS: We conducted a culturally appropriate pilot intervention on workplace chemical exposure reduction strategies. We trained eight Vietnamese owners, who then trained Vietnamese workers in their salons. We conducted pre-, mid-, and post-intervention assessments with workers, including an in-person survey and personal air monitoring of volatile compounds. RESULTS: Survey results suggested statistically significant increases for chemical knowledge and behavioral changes in glove and mask use, and a reduced prevalence of nose, throat, and skin irritations. Air monitoring results showed a net reduction for methyl methacrylate and total volatile organic compounds, but not for toluene. CONCLUSIONS: Worker education disseminated through salon owners to their workers can improve work-related knowledge, behavior, health symptoms, and exposures for select air contaminants, although more research is warranted.

RESUMO

THE PROBLEM: Nail salons represent a burgeoning industry with Vietnamese immigrant workers making up the majority. Workers routinely handle cosmetic products containing hazardous compounds, with implications for their health. PURPOSE OF ARTICLE: This paper describes how a collaborative of multiple organizations and community members collectively developed a proactive research agenda for salon worker health, safety, and rights during a pivotal multistakeholder convening, and advanced on such recommendations, including creating groundbreaking policy changes. KEY POINTS: Key recommendations included (1) creating a multidisciplinary research advisory committee, (2) conducting research on workplace exposures and long-term health impacts, (3) advocating for better governmental oversight of product manufacturers, and (4) identifying safer product alternatives via green chemistry, albeit with cost considerations to salon businesses. CONCLUSION: The participation of diverse stakeholders in the discussions allowed for cross-dialogue on a complex issue, helped to align different stakeholders as allies, and identified critical resources to addressing research gaps.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Many studies have shown consistent associations between evident indoor dampness or mold and respiratory or allergic health effects, but causal links remain unclear. Findings on measured microbiologic factors have received little review. We conducted an updated, comprehensive review on these topics. DATA SOURCES: We reviewed eligible peer-reviewed epidemiologic studies or quantitative meta-analyses, up to late 2009, on dampness, mold, or other microbiologic agents and respiratory or allergic effects. DATA EXTRACTION: We evaluated evidence for causation or association between qualitative/subjective assessments of dampness or mold (considered together) and specific health outcomes. We separately considered evidence for associations between specific quantitative measurements of microbiologic factors and each health outcome. DATA SYNTHESIS: Evidence from epidemiologic studies and meta-analyses showed indoor dampness or mold to be associated consistently with increased asthma development and exacerbation, current and ever diagnosis of asthma, dyspnea, wheeze, cough, respiratory infections, bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, eczema, and upper respiratory tract symptoms. Associations were found in allergic and nonallergic individuals. Evidence strongly suggested causation of asthma exacerbation in children. Suggestive evidence was available for only a few specific measured microbiologic factors and was in part equivocal, suggesting both adverse and protective associations with health. CONCLUSIONS: Evident dampness or mold had consistent positive associations with multiple allergic and respiratory effects. Measured microbiologic agents in dust had limited suggestive associations, including both positive and negative associations for some agents. Thus, prevention and remediation of indoor dampness and mold are likely to reduce health risks, but current evidence does not support measuring specific indoor microbiologic factors to guide health-protective actions.
