RESUMO

A 62-year-old female patient having comorbidities of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity, peptic ulcer, and bilateral Grade II knee osteoarthritis was admitted with a complaint of knee pain. An intra-articular leukocyte-rich platelet-rich plasma (LR-PRP) injection was administered to both knees after clinical and laboratory examinations. Three days later, the pain increased and synovial effusion developed in her left knee. The patient was diagnosed with Streptococcus mitis-induced septic arthritis. Clinical and laboratory improvement was obtained with immediate ceftriaxone treatment in addition to irrigation and debridement. This is the first case report in the literature describing septic arthritis developing after intra-articular injection LR-PRP injection.

In a retrospective cross-sectional study among 202 postmenopausal women aged 46-75 years, we aimed to investigate the relationship between body composition and bone mineral density (BMD) to determine whether fat mass or lean mass is a better determinant of BMD in Turkish postmenopausal women. Lumbar spine (L1-L4) and proximal femur BMD were measured by dual energy X-ray absorbsiometry. Body composition analysis was performed by bioelectric impedance method and fat mass, lean mass, and percent fat were measured. Both fat mass and lean mass were positively correlated with BMD at the lumbar spine and proximal femur, weight and body mass index. Lean mass was also positively correlated with height and negatively correlated with age and years since menopause (P < 0.01). The correlations of fat mass and lean mass with BMD at the lumbar spine and proximal femur remained significant after adjustment for age, years since menopause and height. When the lean mass was adjusted together with age, years since menopause and height, the significant relationship between the fat mass and BMD continued, however the significant correlation between the lean mass and BMD disappeared at all sites after adjustment for fat mass. In multiple regression analyses, fat mass was the significant determinant of all BMD sites. Our data suggest that fat mass is the significant determinant of BMD at the lumbar spine and proximal femur, and lean mass does not have an impact on BMD when fat mass was taken into account in Turkish postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Aerobic endurance exercise enhances antioxidant defenses and improves the physical performance of older adults. However, the combined effect on physical performance of exercise and an antioxidant such as vitamin E has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of six months of vitamin E supplementation and supervised aerobic training on physical performance and body composition in sedentary older adults. METHODS: Fifty-seven adults, whose average age was 71.5+/-7.5 years, were randomly assigned to an exercise (E), exercise-vitamin (EV), control (C) or vitamin (V) group, and were evaluated before, halfway through, and after training. The dose of vitamin E was 900 IU/day. The training program comprised three sessions of walking exercise per week, at an intensity of 70% of heart rate reserve. RESULTS: In the E and EV groups, the training program significantly reduced (p<0.016 for each) body weight and body mass index (BMI), and improved performance in the 6- min walk, chair stand, arm curl, and back scratch tests. Performance on the 6-min walk test improved in E and EV, but decreased in the V group. Performance on the chair stand test increased in the EV and E groups, but decreased in the V and C groups. Body weight and BMI decreased more in the EV group than in the C and V groups (p<0.016). CONCLUSIONS: Six months of vitamin E supplementation has no additive effect beyond that of aerobic training on indices of physical performance and body composition in older sedentary adults.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a 14-week swimming training program on the competence, problem behaviour, and body awareness in 13 children with cerebral palsy aged 5 to 10 years, compared with 10 subjects in a comparison group. Both of the groups continued a traditional rehabilitation program. The outcome measures were Child Behaviour Check List (CBCL) and Body Awareness. The parent forms were evaluated before and after training and also at 6 months followup. Teacher forms and body awareness were evaluated before and after training. The results showed that swimming training produced significant gain on body awareness in the Swimming Group, whereas no significant group differences were evident in competence and problem behaviours on parent or teacher forms of the CBCL.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a 9-week supervised multicomponent exercise program on functional fitness and body composition in independent older adults. Forty-two adults age 60-86 years were randomly assigned to an exercise or a control group and were evaluated before and after training. The training program consisted of 3 sessions of walking, strengthening, and flexibility exercises per week. The multicomponent training program resulted in significant (p < .005) improvements on the chair stand, arm curl, 6-min walk, and up-and-go tests. The findings of this study indicate that a 9-week training program increased upper and lower body strength, aerobic endurance, and agility/dynamic balance in older adults. The most affected components of functional fitness were lower body strength and aerobic endurance. There was no effect of the 9-week training on body composition.
