RESUMO

Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide in both men and women, however mortality in the US and EU are recently declining in parallel with the gradual cut of smoking prevalence. Consequently, the relative frequency of adenocarcinoma increased while that of squamous and small cell carcinomas declined. During the last two decades a plethora of targeted drug therapies have appeared for the treatment of metastasizing non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLC). Personalized oncology aims to precisely match patients to treatments with the highest potential of success. Extensive research is done to introduce biomarkers which can predict the effectiveness of a specific targeted therapeutic approach. The EGFR signaling pathway includes several sufficient targets for the treatment of human cancers including NSCLC. Lung adenocarcinoma may harbor both activating and resistance mutations of the EGFR gene, and further, mutations of KRAS and BRAF oncogenes. Less frequent but targetable genetic alterations include ALK, ROS1, RET gene rearrangements, and various alterations of MET proto-oncogene. In addition, the importance of anti-tumor immunity and of tumor microenvironment has become evident recently. Accumulation of mutations generally trigger tumor specific immune defense, but immune protection may be upregulated as an aggressive feature. The blockade of immune checkpoints results in potential reactivation of tumor cell killing and induces significant tumor regression in various tumor types, such as lung carcinoma. Therapeutic responses to anti PD1-PD-L1 treatment may correlate with the expression of PD-L1 by tumor cells. Due to the wide range of diagnostic and predictive features in lung cancer a plenty of tests are required from a single small biopsy or cytology specimen, which is challenged by major issues of sample quantity and quality. Thus, the efficacy of biomarker testing should be warranted by standardized policy and optimal material usage. In this review we aim to discuss major targeted therapy-related biomarkers in NSCLC and testing possibilities comprehensively.

Distal sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSPN) is the earliest detectable and the most frequent microvascular complication in diabetes mellitus. Several studies have previously demonstrated correlations between cardiovascular risk factors in diabetic patients and independent risk factors for diabetic neuropathy. Our objective was to retrospectively analyze data from diabetic patients in the North-East region of Hungary who underwent neuropathy screening at the Diabetic Neuropathy Center, University of Debrecen, between 2017 and 2021. We aimed to investigate the correlations between cardiovascular risk factors and microvascular complications among patients with DSPN. The median age of the patients was 67 years, 59,6% were female, and 91,1% had type 2 diabetes. The prevalence of DSPN among the study subjects was 71.7%. A significantly longer duration of diabetes (p<0.01) was noted in patients with DSPN. Those with DSPN demonstrated a significantly higher HbA1c level (p<0.001) and a greater frequency of insulin use (p = 0.001). We observed a significantly elevated albumin/creatinine ratio (p<0.001) and a significantly lower eGFR (p<0.001) in patients with DSPN. Diabetic retinopathy exhibited a significantly higher prevalence in patients with DSPN (p<0.001). A higher prevalence of myocardial infarction (p<0.05), ischemic heart disease (p<0.001), peripheral arterial disease (p<0.05) and a history of atherosclerosis (p<0.05) was observed in patients with DSPN. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, the following factors were independently associated with the presence of DSPN: higher HbA1c (OR:2.58, 95% CI:1.89-3.52, p<0.001), age (OR:1.03, 95% CI:1.01-1.05, p = 0.006), albumin/creatinine ratio above 3 mg/mmol (OR:1.23, 95% CI:1.06-1.45, p = 0.008), retinopathy (OR:6.06, 95% CI:1.33-27.53, p = 0.02), and composite cardiovascular endpoint (OR:1.95, 95% CI:1.19-3.19, p = 0.008). Our study revealed that age, elevated HbA1c levels, significant albuminuria, retinopathy, and cardiovascular complications may increase the risk of DSPN. Further investigation of these associations is necessary to understand the impact of patient characteristics during the treatment of diabetic neuropathy.

Guidelines for the management of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) emphasize the importance of lifestyle changes, including a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. However, for many people, these changes can be difficult to maintain over the long term. Medication options are already available to treat obesity, which can help reduce appetite and/or reduce caloric intake. Incretin-based peptides exert their effect through G-protein-coupled receptors, the receptors for glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), and glucagon peptide hormones are important regulators of insulin secretion and energy metabolism. Understanding the role of intercellular signaling pathways and inflammatory processes is essential for the development of effective pharmacological agents in obesity. GLP-1 receptor agonists have been successfully used, but it is assumed that their effectiveness may be limited by desensitization and downregulation of the target receptor. A growing number of new agents acting on incretin hormones are becoming available for everyday clinical practice, including oral GLP-1 receptor agonists, the dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist tirzepatide, and other dual and triple GLP-1/GIP/glucagon receptor agonists, which may show further significant therapeutic potential. This narrative review summarizes the therapeutic effects of different incretin hormones and presents future prospects in the treatment of T2DM and obesity.

Acoustic emission from the compounds [Fe(HB(tz)3)2] and [Fe(Htrz)(trz)2]BF4 was detected during the thermally induced spin transition and is correlated with simultaneously recorded calorimetric signals. We ascribe this phenomenon to elastic waves produced by microstructural and volume changes accompanying the spin transition. Despite the perfect reversibility of the spin state switching (seen by the calorimeter), the acoustic emission activity decreases for successive thermal cycles, revealing thus irreversible microstructural evolution of the samples. The acoustic emission signal amplitude and energy probability distribution functions followed power-law behavior and the characteristic exponents were found to be similar for the two samples both on heating and cooling, indicating the universal character, which is further substantiated by the well scaled average temporal shapes of the avalanches.

Whole-lake microalgal biomass surveys were carried out in Lake Balaton to investigate the seasonal, spatial, and temporal changes of benthic algae, as well as to identify the drivers of the phytobenthos. Phytobenthos was controlled mainly by light: the highest benthic algal biomass was in the shallow littoral region characterized by large grain size (sand) with good light availability but lower nutrient content in the sediment. During the investigated period, phytoplankton biomass showed a significant decrease in almost the entire lake. At the same time, the biomass of benthic algae increased significantly in the eastern areas, increasing the contribution of total lake microalgae biomass (from 20 % to 27 %). Benthic algal biomass increase can be explained by the better light supply, owing to the artificially maintained high water level which greatly mitigates water mixing. The decrease in planktonic algal biomass could be attributed to increased zooplankton grazing, which is otherwise negatively affected by mixing. As a result of the high water level, the trophic structure of the lake has been rearranged in recent decades with a shift from the planktonic life form to the benthic one while the nutrient supply has largely remained unchanged.

Motocross racing is a seldom-researched popular extreme sport. This field research aimed to investigate feeling states, perceived arousal, anxiety, and negative and positive affect in the anticipatory and recovery race periods and their relationship to expected and perceived performance. Twenty Motocross racers completed psychometric scales before and after a national championship race. Results revealed that objective performance was unrelated to psychological measures. Arousal, anxiety, and positive affect were lower after the race. Expected performance was unrelated to postrace measures. Still, perceived performance correlated significantly with the feeling state, anxiety, and positive affect after the race and the feeling state before the race. Furthermore, racers who performed as expected or better showed improved feeling states after the race compared with those who did worse than expected. The core affect of the latter group declined. This research on psychological states during Motocross races could motivate new initiatives for future studies.

Global climate change involves various aspects of climate, including precipitation changes and declining surface wind speeds, but studies investigating biological responses have often focused on the impacts of rising temperatures. Additionally, related long-term studies on bird reproduction tend to concentrate on breeding onset, even though other aspects of breeding could also be sensitive to the diverse weather aspects. This study aimed to explore how multiple aspects of breeding (breeding onset, hatching delay, breeding season length, clutch size, fledgling number) were associated with different weather components. We used an almost four-decade-long dataset to investigate the various aspects of breeding parameters of a collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis) population in the Carpathian Basin. Analyses revealed some considerable associations, for example, breeding seasons lengthened with the amount of daily precipitation, and clutch size increased with the number of cool days. Parallel and opposing changes in the correlated pairs of breeding and weather parameters were also observed. The phenological mismatch between prey availability and breeding time slightly increased, and fledgling number strongly decreased with increasing mistiming. Our results highlighted the intricate interplay between climate change and the reproductive patterns of migratory birds, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach. The results also underscored the potential threats posed by climate change to bird populations and the importance of adaptive responses to changing environmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: In the current study, we conducted a comparative analysis involving three distinct groups: one receiving group-based rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), another undergoing a mindfulness-based intervention (MBI), and a third group serving as the control. The aim of the study was to explore the effectiveness of the two interventions on specific psychological (competitive anxiety, perfectionism, irrational beliefs), physiological (salivary cortisol levels), and neurocognitive (executive functions: working memory, inhibition, cognitive flexibility) functions in Hungarian junior ice hockey players. METHODS: The participants consisted of 10 females and 36 males (NREBT=12, NMINDFULNESS=14, NCONTROL=20). We used questionnaires to assess competitive anxiety, perfectionism, and irrational beliefs. The components of executive functions were measured using a computerized testing system, while cortisol levels were examined through salivary samples. Prior to and after the interventions, each participant underwent all measurements, after which we conducted repeated measures ANOVA on our data. RESULTS: We found REBT to be an effective intervention for the regulation of competitive anxiety, perfectionism, and irrational beliefs as well as for improving some components of executive functions (inhibition and cognitive flexibility). Mindfulness was found to improve athletes' processing speed and set-shifting abilities, which are related to cognitive flexibility and metacognitive processes. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, we explore implications of these findings regarding how each approach is posited to enhance sports performance, using neurocognitive functions as a proxy. These findings are useful for further research and practical implications.

The mechanical behavior, microstructures, as well as the crystallographic textures of the Ti57-Nb43 alloy were investigated on cylindrical specimens compressed at high temperatures, in the range of 700-1000 °C, and strain rates between 0.001 and 1.0 s-1. Hardening, followed by softening behaviors, were observed as a function of strain due to the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization/recovery in hot deformation. The modified five-parameter Voce-type equation described well the stress-strain curves, but, for the present alloy, it was also possible with only four parameters. A new two-variables polynomial function was employed on the four parameters that described well the flow curves as a direct function of temperature and strain rate. It permitted the reduction in the number of parameters and had the predictive capacity for the flow stress at any temperature, strain, and strain rate in the investigated range. The crystallographic textures were similar at all temperatures, with an increase in intensity from 900 °C. The textures could be characterized by a double <100> and <111> fiber and a unique component of (001) <110>, the latter inherited from the initial hot-rolling texture. Viscoplastic polycrystal self-consistent deformation modeling reproduced the measured textures showing that dynamic recrystallization did not alter the development of the deformation texture, only increased its intensity.

OBJECTIVES: The introduction of low-dose CT (LDCT) altered the landscape of lung cancer (LC) screening and contributed to the reduction of mortality rates worldwide. Here we report the final results of HUNCHEST-II, the largest population-based LDCT screening program in Hungary, including the screening and diagnostic outcomes, and the characteristics of the LC cases. METHODS: A total of 4215 high-risk individuals aged between 50 and 75 years with a smoking history of at least 25 pack-years were assigned to undergo LDCT screening. Screening outcomes were determined based on the volume, growth, and volume doubling time of pulmonary nodules or masses. The clinical stage distribution of screen-detected cancers was compared with two independent practice-based databases consisting of unscreened LC patients. RESULTS: The percentage of negative and indeterminate tests at baseline were 74.2% and 21.7%, respectively, whereas the prevalence of positive LDCT results was 4.1%. Overall, 76 LC patients were diagnosed throughout the screening rounds (1.8% of total participants), out of which 62 (1.5%) patients were already identified in the first screening round. The overall positive predictive value of a positive test was 58%. Most screen-detected malignancies were stage I LCs (60.7%), and only 16.4% of all cases could be classified as stage IV disease. The percentage of early-stage malignancies was significantly higher among HUNCHEST-II screen-detected individuals than among the LC patients in the National Koranyi Institute of Pulmonology's archive or the Hungarian Cancer Registry (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: HUNCHEST-II demonstrates that LDCT screening for LC facilitates early diagnosis, thus arguing in favor of introducing systematic LC screening in Hungary. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: HUNCHEST-II is the so-far largest population-based low-dose CT screening program in Hungary. A positive test's overall positive predictive value was 58%, and most screen-detected malignancies were early-stage lesions. These results pave the way for expansive systematic screening in the region. KEY POINTS: • Conducted in 18 medical facilities, HUNCHEST-II is the so far largest population-based low-dose CT screening program in Hungary. • The vast majority of screen-detected malignancies were early-stage lung cancers, and the overall positive predictive value of a positive test was 58%. • HUNCHEST-II facilitates early diagnosis, thus arguing in favor of introducing systematic lung cancer screening in Hungary.

DNAmPhenoAge, DNAmGrimAge, and the newly developed DNAmFitAge are DNA methylation (DNAm)-based biomarkers that reflect the individual aging process. Here, we examine the relationship between physical fitness and DNAm-based biomarkers in adults aged 33-88 with a wide range of physical fitness (including athletes with long-term training history). Higher levels of VO2max (ρ = 0.2, p = 6.4E - 4, r = 0.19, p = 1.2E - 3), Jumpmax (p = 0.11, p = 5.5E - 2, r = 0.13, p = 2.8E - 2), Gripmax (ρ = 0.17, p = 3.5E - 3, r = 0.16, p = 5.6E - 3), and HDL levels (ρ = 0.18, p = 1.95E - 3, r = 0.19, p = 1.1E - 3) are associated with better verbal short-term memory. In addition, verbal short-term memory is associated with decelerated aging assessed with the new DNAm biomarker FitAgeAcceleration (ρ: - 0.18, p = 0.0017). DNAmFitAge can distinguish high-fitness individuals from low/medium-fitness individuals better than existing DNAm biomarkers and estimates a younger biological age in the high-fit males and females (1.5 and 2.0 years younger, respectively). Our research shows that regular physical exercise contributes to observable physiological and methylation differences which are beneficial to the aging process. DNAmFitAge has now emerged as a new biological marker of quality of life.

Three-dimensional printing is a useful and common process in additive manufacturing nowadays. The advantage of additive polymer technology is its rapidity and design freedom. Polymer materials' mechanical properties depend on the process parameters and the chemical composition of the polymer used. Mechanical properties are very important in product applicability. The mechanical properties of polymers can be enhanced by heat treatment. Additive-manufactured PLA's mechanical properties and structure can be modified via heat treatment after the 3D printing process. The goal of this research was to test the effect of heat treatment on the mechanical and structural parameters of additive-manufactured PLA. This was achieved via the FDM processing of standard PLA tensile test specimens with longitudinal and vertical printing orientations. After printing, the test specimens were heat-treated at 55 °C, 65 °C and 80 °C for 5 h and after being held at 20 °C for 15 h. The printed and heat-treated specimens were tested using tensile tests and microscopy. Based on the test results, we can conclude that the optimal heat treatment process temperature was 65 °C for 5 h. Under the heat treatment, the test specimens did not show any deformation, the tensile strength increased by 35% and the porosity of the PLA structure decreased.

Temporal average shapes of crackling noise avalanches, U(t) (U is the detected parameter proportional to the interface velocity), have self-similar behavior, and it is expected that by appropriate normalization, they can be scaled together according to a universal scaling function. There are also universal scaling relations between the avalanche parameters (amplitude, A, energy, E, size (area), S, and duration, T), which in the mean field theory (MFT) have the form E∝A3, S∝A2, S∝T2. Recently, it turned out that normalizing the theoretically predicted average U(t) function at a fixed size, U(t)=atexp-bt2 (a and b are non-universal, material-dependent constants) by A and the rising time, R, a universal function can be obtained for acoustic emission (AE) avalanches emitted during interface motions in martensitic transformations, using the relation R~A1-φ too, where φ is a mechanism-dependent constant. It was shown that φ also appears in the scaling relations E~A3-φ and S~A2-φ, in accordance with the enigma for AE, that the above exponents are close to 2 and 1, respectively (in the MFT limit, i.e., with φ= 0, they are 3 and 2, respectively). In this paper, we analyze these properties for acoustic emission measurements carried out during the jerky motion of a single twin boundary in a Ni50Mn28.5Ga21.5 single crystal during slow compression. We show that calculating from the above-mentioned relations and normalizing the time axis of the average avalanche shapes with A1-φ, and the voltage axis with A, the averaged avalanche shapes for the fixed area are well scaled together for different size ranges. These have similar universal shapes as those obtained for the intermittent motion of austenite/martensite interfaces in two different shape memory alloys. The averaged shapes for a fixed duration, although they could be acceptably scaled together, showed a strong positive asymmetry (the avalanches decelerate much slower than they accelerate) and thus did not show a shape reminiscent of an inverted parabola, predicted by the MFT. For comparison, the above scaling exponents were also calculated from simultaneously measured magnetic emission data. It was obtained that the φ values are in accordance with theoretical predictions going beyond the MFT, but the AE results for φ are characteristically different from these, supporting that the well-known enigma for AE is related to this deviation.

BACKGROUND: Given the growing number of primary total ankle replacements (TAR), an increase in the number of patients undergoing subsequent revisions might be expected. Achieving a stable and balanced ankle while preserving the remaining bone stock as much as possible is crucial for success in revision TAR. Most reported techniques rely on bulky implants with extended fixation features. Since 2018, we have used a novel, three-component ankle prosthesis for revision that is converted in situ to a fixed-bearing, two-component ankle prosthesis once the components have found their position according to an individual's anatomy. The results of this novel concept (fixation, revision, pain, or function) have not, to our knowledge, been reported. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: What are the short-term results with this new revision TAR design, in terms of (1) repeat revision surgery, (2) patient-reported outcomes on the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score, (3) pain according to the VAS, and (4) radiographic signs of fixation? METHODS: Between February 2018 and February 2020, we performed 230 TAR surgeries (in 206 patients) for any indication in our clinic. The novel semiconstrained, uncemented Hintermann Series H2 © implant was used in 96% (220 of 230) of procedures (201 patients). Fifty-four percent (119 of 220) of these were converted from an existing TAR to H2, which was the focus of the present study. However, only 45% (54 of 119) of these conversions to H2 were eligible for analysis. These patients had a mean age of 63 ± 12 years, and 43% (23 of 54) were women. The median (range) follow-up time was 3.2 years (2.0 to 4.3). The H2 design allows in situ conversion to a fixed-bearing system, with minimal bone resection. It achieves translational and rotational stability while preserving function and supporting the periarticular soft tissues. We defined repeat revision as exchange of one or both metal components, ankle fusion, or amputation and assessed it using a cumulative incidence survivorship estimator. Factors potentially associated with revision were assessed using Cox regression analyses. Clinical and radiologic outcomes were assessed preoperatively and at the most recent follow-up interval. Clinical outcomes included pain on the VAS (average pain during normal daily activity during the past seven days) and AOFAS score. Radiologic outcomes were the tibial articular surface angle, tibiotalar surface angle, talar tilt angle in the coronal plane, and AP offset ratio in the sagittal plane, as well as radiolucent lines and radiographic signs of loosening, defined as change in position greater than 2° of the flat base of the tibia component in relation to the long axis of the tibia, subsidence of the talar component into the talus greater than 5 mm, or change in position greater than 5° relative to a line drawn from the top of the talonavicular joint to the tuberosity of the calcaneus, as seen on plain weightbearing radiographs. RESULTS: The cumulative incidence of repeat revision after 1 and 2 years was 5.6% (95% CI 0% to 11%) and 7.4% (95% CI 0% to 14%), respectively. With the numbers available, no clinical factors we analyzed were associated with the risk of repeat revision. The median values of all assessed clinical outcomes improved; however, not all patients improved by clinically important margins. The median (range) AOFAS ankle-hindfoot score increased (from 50 [16 to 94] to 78 [19 to 100], difference of medians 28; p < 0.01), and the median pain on the VAS decreased (from 5 [0 to 9] to 2 [0 to 9], difference of medians 3; p < 0.01) from before surgery to follow-up at a minimum of 2 years. Radiographically, lucency was seen in 12% (6 of 49 patients) and loosening was seen in 8% (4 of 49). One of these patients showed symptomatic loosening and was among the four patients overall who underwent revision. We could not assess risk factors for repeat revision because of the low number of events (four). CONCLUSION: The investigated new in situ fixed-bearing ankle design achieved overall better short-term results than those reported in previous research. Destabilization of the ankle joint complex, soft tissue insufficiency, and possible changes of the joint configuration need an optimal solution in revision arthroplasty. The studied implant might be the answer to this complex issue and help surgeons in the perioperative decision-making process. However, a relatively high percentage of patients did not achieve a clinically important difference. Observational studies are needed to understand long-term implant behavior and possibly to identify ankles benefiting the most from revision. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV, therapeutic study.

Post-compression of 12-fs laser pulses with multi-TW peak power from an optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) system was performed by using a single thin fused silica plate in a vacuum. By optimizing the input pulses in both spatial and temporal domains, after compression with customized chirped mirrors, we achieved pulses as short as 3.87 fs, in combination with 12-mJ energy. The spatio-spectral quality of the post-compressed pulses was thoroughly analyzed. The generated 1.4-cycle pulses pave the way for next generation attosecond and particle acceleration experiments.

Bone sarcomas of the lower extremities are rare malignancies occurring mostly amongst adolescents and young adults. Necessarily, the therapy conducted in sarcoma centers is multimodal and multidisciplinary. In certain cases, in a metastasis free situation with adequate therapy, an overall survival rate of 90% can be achieved. Two principal surgical procedures exit for the local control of the malignancy: 1. Limb salvage with biological with/or endoprosthetic reconstruction; and, 2. amputation with restoration of the function with exoprosthesis or endo-exoprosthesis. Currently, limb salvage procedures are performed in up to 95% of cases. In contrast, amputation is performed when the disease has reached an advanced stage or limb salvage has failed. Both of the surgical options have their risks and possible complications. According to the literature, there should be no significant difference between limb salvage and amputation with respect to long-term overall survival, overall quality of life, psycho-socio-economic outcomes, or patient satisfaction. An important advantage of limb salvage is greater everyday functionality. With the expanded indication of limb salvage and great survival rates, the cases of late complications in patients expecting to maintain their own leg continues to increase. In some cases, it requires multiple interventions, ranging from minor up to the most complex revisions, to maintain the functionality of the extremity. Despite the great costs, personal effort, and the possible complications, limb salvage could be a suitable method to achieve functionally beneficial outcomes and patient satisfaction in bone sarcomas of the lower extremities over the long-term even in cases involving complications.

In this investigation, an attempt was made to develop a new high-strength and high-ductility aluminum metal-matrix composite. It was achieved by incorporating ceramic reinforcement into the metal which was formed in situ from a polymer by pyrolysis. A crosslinked PMHS polymer was introduced into commercially pure aluminum via friction stir processing (FSP). The distributed micro- and nano-sized polymer was then converted into ceramic particles by heating at 500 °C for 10 h and processed again via FSP. The produced composite showed a 2.5-fold increase in yield strength (to 119 MPa from 48 MPa) and 3.5-fold increase in tensile strength (to 286 MPa from 82 MPa) with respect to the base metal. The ductility was marginally reduced from 40% to 30%. The increase in strength is attributed to the grain refinement and the larger ceramic particles. High-temperature grain stability was obtained, with minimal loss to mechanical properties, up to 500 °C due to the Zenner pinning effect of the nano-sized ceramic particles at the grain boundaries. Fractures took place throughout the matrix up to 300 °C. Above 300 °C, the interfacial bonding between the particle and matrix became weak, and fractures took place at the particle-matrix interface.

In some shape-memory single crystals the stress-strain (σ~ε) curves, belonging to stress induced martensitic transformations from austenite to martensite at fixed temperature, instead of being the usual slightly increasing function or horizontal, have an overall negative slope with sudden stress drops in it. We discuss this phenomenon by using a local equilibrium thermodynamic approach and analysing the sign of the second derivative of the difference of the Gibbs free energy. We show that, considering also the possible nucleation and growth of two martensite structural modifications/variants, the stress-strain loops can be unstable. This means that the overall slope of the uploading branch of the stress-strain curve can be negative for smooth transformation if the second martensite, which is more stable with larger transformation strain, is the final product. We also show that local stress-drops on the stress-strain curve can appear if the nucleation of the second martensite is difficult, and the presence of such local stress-drops alone can also result in an overall negative slope of the stress-strain curves. It is illustrated that the increase of the temperature of the thermal recovery during burst-like transition is a measure of the change of the nucleation energy: the more stable martensite has larger nucleation energy.

Within speech processing, articulatory-to-acoustic mapping (AAM) methods can apply ultrasound tongue imaging (UTI) as an input. (Micro)convex transducers are mostly used, which provide a wedge-shape visual image. However, this process is optimized for the visual inspection of the human eye, and the signal is often post-processed by the equipment. With newer ultrasound equipment, now it is possible to gain access to the raw scanline data (i.e., ultrasound echo return) without any internal post-processing. In this study, we compared the raw scanline representation with the wedge-shaped processed UTI as the input for the residual network applied for AAM, and we also investigated the optimal size of the input image. We found no significant differences between the performance attained using the raw data and the wedge-shaped image extrapolated from it. We found the optimal pixel size to be 64 × 43 in the case of the raw scanline input, and 64 × 64 when transformed to a wedge. Therefore, it is not necessary to use the full original 64 × 842 pixels raw scanline, but a smaller image is enough. This allows for the building of smaller networks, and will be beneficial for the development of session and speaker-independent methods for practical applications. AAM systems have the target application of a "silent speech interface", which could be helpful for the communication of the speaking-impaired, in military applications, or in extremely noisy conditions.

Results of acoustic emission (AE) measurements, carried out during plastic deformation of polycrystalline Sn samples, are analyzed by the adaptive sequential k-means method. The acoustic avalanches, originating from different sources, are separated on the basis of their spectral properties, that is, sorted into clusters, presented both on the so-called feature space (energy-median frequency plot) and on the power spectral density (PSD) curves. We found that one cluster in every measurement belongs to background vibrations, while the remaining ones are clearly attributed to twinning as well as dislocation slips at −30 °C and 25 °C, respectively. Interestingly, fingerprints of the well-known "ringing" of AE signals are present in different weights on the PSD curves. The energy and size distributions of the avalanches, corresponding to twinning and dislocation slips, show a bit different power-law exponents from those obtained earlier by fitting all AE signals without cluster separation. The maximum-likelihood estimation of the avalanche energy (ε) and size (τ) exponents provide ε=1.57±0.05 (at −30 °C) and ε=1.35±0.1 (at 25 °C), as well as τ=1.92±0.05 (at −30 °C) and τ= 1.55±0.1 (at 25 °C). The clustering analysis provides not only a manner to eliminate the background noise, but the characteristic avalanche shapes are also different for the two mechanisms, as it is visible on the PSD curves. Thus, we have illustrated that this clustering analysis is very useful in discriminating between different AE sources and can provide more realistic estimates, for example, for the characteristic exponents as compared to the classical hit-based approach where the exponents reflect an average value, containing hits from the low-frequency mechanical vibrations of the test machine, too.
