Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of chronic pain and is associated with high rates of depression. Physical activity reduces depression symptoms and pain levels. It remains unknown if physical activity is associated with lower symptoms of depression irrespective of pain levels in individuals with osteoarthritis. We explored whether pain mediated or moderated the relationship between levels of physical activity engagement and depression symptoms. Individuals with osteoarthritis who were waiting for an orthopaedic consultation at a public hospital in Melbourne, Australia, were recruited. Data collected on pain levels, physical activity engagement and depression symptoms. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise participant characteristics. Moderation and mediation analyses were used to establish the impact of pain on the relationship between physical activity and depression, after adjusting for demographic and joint specific characteristics. The results indicated that the inverse association between physical activity and depression depended on the level of pain, such that the association was stronger in people with greater pain. The mediation results confirm that participating in physical activity is indirectly, inversely associated with symptoms of depression through lower levels of pain. The highest levels of pain were associated with the most potential benefit in terms of reduction in symptoms of depression from engaging in physical activity. Physical activity may be particularly important to manage depression symptoms in people with greater osteoarthritis-related pain as patients with the highest pain may have the greatest benefits.

Background: Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) can cause hip pain and chondrolabral damage that may be managed non-operatively or surgically. Squatting motions require large degrees of hip flexion and underpin many daily and sporting tasks but may cause hip impingement and provoke pain. Differential effects of physiotherapist-led care and arthroscopy on biomechanics during squatting have not been examined previously. This study explored differences in 12-month changes in kinematics and moments during squatting between patients with FAIS treated with a physiotherapist-led intervention (Personalised Hip Therapy, PHT) and arthroscopy. Methods: A subsample (n = 36) of participants with FAIS enrolled in a multi-centre, pragmatic, two-arm superiority randomised controlled trial underwent three-dimensional motion analysis during squatting at baseline and 12-months following random allocation to PHT (n = 17) or arthroscopy (n = 19). Changes in time-series and peak trunk, pelvis, and hip biomechanics, and squat velocity and maximum depth were explored between treatment groups. Results: No significant differences in 12-month changes were detected between PHT and arthroscopy groups. Compared to baseline, the arthroscopy group squatted slower at follow-up (descent: mean difference -0.04 m∙s-1 (95%CI [-0.09 to 0.01]); ascent: -0.05 m∙s-1 [-0.11 to 0.01]%). No differences in squat depth were detected between or within groups. After adjusting for speed, trunk flexion was greater in both treatment groups at follow-up compared to baseline (descent: PHT 7.50° [-14.02 to -0.98]%; ascent: PHT 7.29° [-14.69 to 0.12]%, arthroscopy 16.32° [-32.95 to 0.30]%). Compared to baseline, both treatment groups exhibited reduced anterior pelvic tilt (descent: PHT 8.30° [0.21-16.39]%, arthroscopy -10.95° [-5.54 to 16.34]%; ascent: PHT -7.98° [-0.38 to 16.35]%, arthroscopy -10.82° [3.82-17.81]%), hip flexion (descent: PHT -11.86° [1.67-22.05]%, arthroscopy -16.78° [8.55-22.01]%; ascent: PHT -12.86° [1.30-24.42]%, arthroscopy -16.53° [6.72-26.35]%), and knee flexion (descent: PHT -6.62° [0.56- 12.67]%; ascent: PHT -8.24° [2.38-14.10]%, arthroscopy -8.00° [-0.02 to 16.03]%). Compared to baseline, the PHT group exhibited more plantarflexion during squat ascent at follow-up (-3.58° [-0.12 to 7.29]%). Compared to baseline, both groups exhibited lower external hip flexion moments at follow-up (descent: PHT -0.55 N∙m/BW∙HT[%] [0.05-1.05]%, arthroscopy -0.84 N∙m/BW∙HT[%] [0.06-1.61]%; ascent: PHT -0.464 N∙m/BW∙HT[%] [-0.002 to 0.93]%, arthroscopy -0.90 N∙m/BW∙HT[%] [0.13-1.67]%). Conclusion: Exploratory data suggest at 12-months follow-up, neither PHT or hip arthroscopy are superior at eliciting changes in trunk, pelvis, or lower-limb biomechanics. Both treatments may induce changes in kinematics and moments, however the implications of these changes are unknown. G-quadruplexes (G4s) are nucleic acids secondary structures that may form in guanine-rich sequences, either intra or inter-molecularly. Ability of a primary sequence to form a G4 can be predicted computationally with an improving accuracy as well as tested in bulk using biophysical measurements. As a result, G4 density maps have been devised for a large number of genomes from all life kingdoms. Experimental validation of the formation of G4s in vivo however remains indirect and relies on their stabilization with small molecules, antibodies or proteins, or mutational studies, in order to measure downstream effects on gene expression or genome stability for example. Although numerous techniques exist to observe spontaneous formation of G4s in single-stranded DNA, observing G4 formation in double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) is more challenging. However, it is particularly relevant to understand if a given G4 sequence forms stably in a dsDNA context, if it is stable enough to dock proteins or pose a challenge to molecular motors such as helicases or polymerases. In essence, G4s can be a threat to genomic stability but carry as well as the potential to be elements of a structural language in the non-replicating genome. To study quantitatively the formation dynamics and stability of single intramolecular G4s embedded in dsDNA, we have adapted techniques of DNA manipulation under magnetic tweezers. This technique also allows to study encounters of molecular motors with G4 at a single molecule resolution, in order to gain insight into the specificity of G4 resolution by molecular motors, and its efficiency. The procedures described here include the design of the G4 substrate, the study of G4 formation probability and lifetime in dsDNA, as well as procedures to characterize the encounter between the Pif1 helicase and a G4 until G4 resolution. The procedures that we described here can easily be extended to the study of other G4s or molecular motors.

In this work, we report an innovative method for synthesizing BiOI nanoplate powder by a slow basification of an aqueous solution constituted of Bi(NO3)3 and KI. The basification was done with NH3 vapor which was naturally generated on top of an NH4OH solution kept in a closed space. The impact of the basification rate on the morphology and crystallinity of the BiOI product was investigated. Herein, we also report on the use of newly produced BiOI nanoplate powder together with the VO(acac)2 precursor for fabricating BiVO4 photoanodes for solar driven water splitting applications. We also discuss how the morphology of BiOI nanoplates and their orientation on a fluorine doped tin oxide substrate will affect the morphology, topology and photocatalytic performance of the electrode. The BiVO4 photoanode showed a photocatalytic current density of 0.55 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. the Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE) when assayed in a pH 7 phosphate buffer electrolyte and under 1 sun illumination.

Introduction: Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MC) is a rapidly progressive sarcoma that predominantly impacts the bones. Making up only 3% of chondrosarcomas, about one-third of these tumours develop in extra-skeletal sites. Case presentation: The authors present a clinical case of a 42-year-old patient who was diagnosed with MC 8 years ago, now admitted to the hospital with a palpable epigastric mass. Clinical and laboratory examinations showed consistent results for MC tumours, with metastasis to the body and tail of the pancreas and invasion of the splenic vein. Surgical resection and systemic screening were performed to ensure that there were no lesions elsewhere. Regular follow-up has found no localized lesions or complications after 15 months. Clinical discussion: Metastatic extra-skeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the pancreas is exceptionally rare. To our current understanding, only 14 such cases have been documented in medical literature. The symptoms of pancreatic metastasis are diverse and the radiographic features of metastatic mesenchymal chondrosarcoma are not typically distinct. Conclusions: Although MC tumours do not frequently occur in sites other than the axial system, a tumour presenting later in a patient with a history of MC should be reviewed to confirm the diagnosis of metastatic MC. Treatment can vary between surgery, radiation therapy and systemic therapy.

Cellular processes rely on proteins with temperature-dependent stability and activity. While thermosensitivity in biological networks is well-explored, the effect of temperature on complex mechanochemical assemblies, like the spindle, is rarely studied. We examined fission yeast spindle dynamics and chromosome segregation from 15°C to 40°C. Our findings reveal that these parameters follow U-shaped temperature-dependent curves but reach their minima at different temperatures. Specifically, spindle dynamics peak around 35°C, whereas chromosome segregation defects are minimized at 25°C. This suggests a scenario in which mitotic errors are tolerated to expedite rapid cell cycle progression.

In this study, cashew apple juice was treated with different levels of powdered gelatin (2%, 5%, and 10%) to remove tannins. The results showed that the addition of 5% gelatin removed 99.2% of condensed tannins while did not affect reducing sugars of juice. Subsequently, tannin-free cashew apple juice (CA) was aerobically fermented for 14 days with Komagataeibacter saccharivorans strain 1.1 (KS) and Gluconacetobacter entanii HWW100 (GE) in comparison with Hestrin-Schramm (HS) medium as control. The dry weight of bacterial cellulose (BC) obtained from the KS strain (2.12 and 1.48 g/L for CA and HS media, respectively) was higher than that from the GE strain (0.69 and 1.21 g/L for CA and HS media, respectively). Although GE showed low BC production yield, its viability in both media after 14-day fermentation was notable (6.06-7.21 log CFU/mL) compared to KS strain (1.90-3.30 log CFU/mL). In addition, the XRD and FT-IR analysis showed that there was no significant difference in the crystallinity and functional groups of BC films when cultured on CA and HS medium, while the morphology by SEM exhibited the phenolic molecules on the film surface. Cashew apple juice has been shown to be a viable and cost-effective medium for the BC production.

Pediatric patients with heart failure have limited treatment options because of a shortage of donor hearts and compatible left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). To address this issue, our group is developing an implantable pediatric LVAD for patients weighing 5-20 kg, capable of accommodating different physiological hemodynamic conditions as patients grow. To evaluate LVAD prototypes across a wide range of conditions, we developed a numerical cardiovascular model, using data from a mock circulatory loop (MCL) and patient-specific elastance functions. The numerical MCL was validated against experimental MCL results, showing good agreement, with differences ranging from 0 to 11%. The numerical model was also tested under left heart failure conditions and showed a worst-case difference of 16%. In an MCL study with a pediatric LVAD, a pediatric dataset was obtained from the experimental MCL and used to tune the numerical MCL. Then, the numerical model simulated LVAD flow by using an HQ curve obtained from the LVAD's impeller. When the numerical MCL was validated against the experimental MCL, hemodynamic differences ranged between 0 and 9%. These findings suggest that the numerical model can replicate various physiological conditions and impeller designs, indicating its potential as a tool for developing and optimizing pediatric LVADs.

INTRODUCTION: The most effective surgical approach for total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains controversial. Comparisons of surgical approach based on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have been limited to short- to mid-term outcomes or the comparison of only 2 approaches. The aim of this study was to compare PROMs for the 3 main approaches for THA with up to 10 years follow-up. METHODS: A total of 906 patients who underwent primary THA at a single hospital between 2009 and 2020 through an anterior (312), lateral (211) or posterior (383) approach were evaluated using the Oxford Hip Score (OHS), EuroQoL-5-Dimension (EQ-5D-5L) and visual analogue scale/verbal rating scale for pain (VAS/VRS). PROMs were prospectively collected before surgery and routinely at 6 weeks, 6 months and 1, 2, 5 and 10 years after surgery. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in demographics or comorbidities between the 3 groups. All 3 approaches resulted in a significant improvement in overall PROMs after THA, and plateaued after 6 months postoperatively, with no difference between the approaches (OHS, p < 0.01;EQ-5D-5L Index, p < 0.01;VAS/VRS, p < 0.01). The EQ-5D-5L mobility dimension showed that the lateral approach resulted in 20% more patients reporting problems with mobility than the posterior and anterior approaches at the 6-week, 6-month, 2-year and 10-year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that all 3 common THA approaches substantially and similarly improve the OHS, EQ-5D-5L Index and VRS between 6 months and 10 years postoperatively. However, patient-reported mobility was poorer after a lateral approach and continued to be so at long-term follow-up.

Patients with single-ventricle heart disease and failing Fontan circulation represent the largest and most rapidly growing subgroup of adults with congenital heart disease referred for transplant assessment. Few clinical therapies are available for improving Fontan hemodynamics. Mechanical circulatory support devices have been used successfully in the clinical setting to assist the single ventricle, but no device is currently available to support the subpulmonary circulation. A subpulmonary pump could be used to support patients with failing Fontan circulation by mitigating chronic venous hypertension and restoring normal physiology. Our group designed a Fontan assist device (FAD) to augment right-heart (subpulmonary) flow and decrease venous pressures. To ensure that our FAD could achieve target hemodynamic parameters, we developed a numerical Fontan circulatory model to evaluate the interaction between the cardiovascular system and the FAD. To ensure that the circulatory model can mimic real-world clinical conditions, we investigated the effects of various medications in the FAD loop. Results showed that the FAD can significantly increase cardiac output in Fontan patients and can create a pressure difference between the pulmonary arteries and venae cavae. Further, the systemic venous pressure can be significantly reduced by using the FAD plus diuretic treatment. The downstream pulmonary artery pressure can be increased by augmenting the FAD with vasodilator treatment, diuretic treatment, or both.Clinical Relevance- This work supports FAD development by providing a method for studying human cardiovascular effects under various hemodynamic scenarios.

BACKGROUND: The demand for orthopedic specialist consultations for patients with osteoarthritis in public hospitals is high and continues to grow. Lengthy waiting times are increasingly affecting patients from low socioeconomic and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who are more likely to rely on public health care. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to co-design a digital health intervention for patients with OA who are waiting for an orthopedic specialist consultation at a public health service, which is located in local government areas (LGAs) of identified social and economic disadvantage. METHODS: The stakeholders involved in the co-design process included the research team; end users (patients); clinicians; academic experts; senior hospital staff; and a research, design, and development agency. The iterative co-design process comprised several key phases, including the collation and refinement of evidence-based information by the research team, with assistance from academic experts. Structured interviews with 16 clinicians (female: n=10, 63%; male: n=6, 38%) and 11 end users (age: mean 64.3, SD 7.2 y; female: n=7, 64%; male: n=4, 36%) of 1-hour duration were completed to understand the requirements for the intervention. Weekly workshops were held with key stakeholders throughout development. A different cohort of 15 end users (age: mean 61.5, SD 9.7 y; female: n=12, 80%; male: n=3, 20%) examined the feasibility of the study during a 2-week testing period. The System Usability Scale was used as the primary measure of intervention feasibility. RESULTS: Overall, 7 content modules were developed and refined over several iterations. Key themes highlighted in the clinician and end user interviews were the diverse characteristics of patients, the hierarchical structure with which patients view health practitioners, the importance of delivering information in multiple formats (written, audio, and visual), and access to patient-centered information as early as possible in the health care journey. All content was translated into Vietnamese, the most widely spoken language following English in the local government areas included in this study. Patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds tested the feasibility of the intervention. A mean System Usability Scale score of 82.7 (SD 16) was recorded for the intervention, placing its usability in the excellent category. CONCLUSIONS: Through the co-design process, we developed an evidence-based, holistic, and patient-centered digital health intervention. The intervention was specifically designed to be used by patients from diverse backgrounds, including those with low health, digital, and written literacy levels. The effectiveness of the intervention in improving the physical and mental health of patients will be determined by a high-quality randomized controlled trial.

Amorphous molybdenum sulfide (MoSx) and crystalline molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) are attractive noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for the H2 evolution reaction from water. Their actual activities depend on the quantity of active sites which are exposed to the electrolyte, which in turn, is influenced by their specific electrochemical surface area. Herein we report on the fabrication of regular inverse opal MoSx and MoS2 films by employing polystyrene nanoparticles with diameters in the range of 30-90 nm as hard templates. The use of these catalysts for the H2 evolution reaction in an acidic electrolyte solution is also presented. Impacts of the regular porous structure, the film thickness as well as the chemical nature of the catalyst (MoS2versus MoSx) are discussed. It shows a catalytically-effective-thickness of ca. 300 nm where the electrolyte can fully penetrate the catalyst macropores, thus all the catalytic active sites can be exposed to the electrolyte to achieve the maximal catalytic operation.

Hydrogels provide a promising platform for cartilage repair and regeneration. Although hydrogels have shown some efficacy, they still have shortcomings including poor mechanical properties and suboptimal integration with surrounding cartilage. Herein, hydrogels that are injectable, cytocompatible, mechanically robust, and highly adhesive to cartilage are developed. This approach uses GelMA-glycol chitosan (GelMA-GC) that is crosslinkable with visible light and photoinitiators (lithium acylphosphinate and tris (2,2'-bipyridyl) dichlororuthenium (II) hexahydrate ([RuII(bpy)3 ]2+ and sodium persulfate (Ru/SPS)). Ru/SPS-cross-linked hydrogels have higher compressive and tensile modulus, and most prominently higher adhesive strength with cartilage, which also depends on inclusion of GC. Tensile and push-out tests of the Ru/SPS-cross-linked GelMA-GC hydrogels demonstrate adhesive strength of ≈100 and 46 kPa, respectively. Hydrogel precursor solutions behave in a Newtonian manner and are injectable. After injection in focal bovine cartilage defects and in situ cross-linking, this hydrogel system remains intact and integrated with cartilage following joint manipulation ex vivo. Cells remain viable (>85%) in the hydrogel system and further show tissue regeneration potential after three weeks of in vitro culture. These preliminary results provide further motivation for future research on bioadhesive hydrogels for cartilage repair and regeneration.

Untreated osteochondral defects are a leading cause of osteoarthritis, a condition that places a heavy burden on both patients and orthopedic surgeons. Although tissue engineering has shown promise for creating mechanically similar cartilage-like constructs, their integration with cartilage remains elusive. Therefore, a formulation of biodegradable, biocompatible biomaterial with sufficient mechanical and adhesive properties for cartilage repair is required. To accomplish this, we prepared biocompatible, photo-curable, mechanically robust, and highly adhesive GelMA-glycol chitosan (GelMA-GC) hydrogels. GelMA-GC hydrogels had a modulus of 283 kPa and provided a biocompatible environment (>70% viability of embedded chondrocytes) in long-term culture within a bovine cartilage ring. The adhesive strength of bovine chondrocyte-laden GelMA-GC hydrogel to bovine cartilage increased from 38 to 52 kPa over four weeks of culture. Moreover, intermittent uniaxial mechanical stimulation enhanced the adhesive strength to ∼60 kPa, indicating that the cartilage-hydrogel integration could remain secure and functional under dynamic loading conditions. Furthermore, gene expression data and immunofluorescence staining revealed the capacity of chondrocytes in GelMA-GC hydrogel to synthesize chondrogenic markers (COL2A1 and ACAN), suggesting the potential for tissue regeneration. The promising in vitro results of this work motivate further exploration of the potential of photo-curable GelMA-GC bioadhesive hydrogels for cartilage repair and regeneration.

The transplantation of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) sheets derived from human umbilical cords (hUCs) was investigated in this study as a potential application in treating myocardial infarction (MI). Two groups of hUC-MSC sheets were formed by populating LunaGelTM, which are 3D scaffolds of photo-crosslinkable gelatin-based hydrogel with two different cell densities. An MI model was created by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery of healthy BALB/c mice. After two weeks, the cell sheets were applied directly to the MI area and the efficacy of the treatment was evaluated over the next two weeks by monitoring the mice's weight, evaluating the left ventricle ejection fraction, and assessing the histology of the heart tissue at the end of the experiment. Higher cell density showed significantly greater efficiency in MI mice treatment in terms of weight gain and the recovery of ejection fraction. The heart tissue of the groups receiving cell sheets showed human-CD44-positive staining and reduced fibrosis and apoptosis. In conclusion, the hUC-MSC sheets ameliorated heart MI injury in mice and the efficacy of the cell sheets improved as the number of cells increased.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal conditions, including osteoarthritis (OA), are a leading cause of disability and chronic pain, and are associated with high rates of comorbid depression. However, signs of depression are often masked by pain. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and severity of depression and pain in individuals awaiting specialist orthopaedic consultation. A secondary objective was to determine the relationship between pain and depression, irrespective of demographic factors and clinical diagnosis. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of individuals awaiting orthopaedic consultation at a public hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Relevant data were extracted from medical records and questionnaires. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise participant characteristics. The patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used to assess depression and a numerical rating scale (NRS) was used to assess pain severity. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to establish the relationship between pain and depression. RESULTS: Nine hundred and eighty-six adults (mean ± standard deviation, age = 54.1 ± 15.7 years, 53.2% women) participated in the study. OA was present in 56% of the population and 34% of the entire population had moderate depression or greater, 19% of which met the criteria for major depressive disorder. Moderate-to-severe pain was present in 79% of individuals with OA and 55% of individuals with other musculoskeletal complaints. Pain was significantly associated with depression scores (ß = 0.84, adjusted R2 = 0.13, P < 0.001), and this relationship remained significant after accounting for gender, age, education and employment status, OA status, number of joints affected and waiting time (ß = 0.91, adjusted R2 = 0.19, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Depression affects one-third of individuals on an orthopaedic waitlist. A strong link between pain and depression in patients awaiting specialist orthopaedic consultation exists, indicating a need for an integrated approach in addressing pain management and depression to manage this complex and comorbid presentation.

Mitosis is usually shorter than other phases of the cell cycle and maintains a consistent duration despite variations in cell size and spindle size. This suggests the existence of a compensatory mechanism that ensures a short duration, possibly as a protective measure against irreversible damage, such as DNA damage. To explore the link between prolonged mitosis and DNA damage, we develop a microscopy-based assay utilizing Rad52-GFP as a marker for mitotic DNA damage. Through this assay, we provide evidence that mutants with prolonged mitosis exhibit increased Rad52 puncta, indicating an elevation in endogenous DNA damage.

Introduction: Estimating the probability of obstructive coronary artery disease in patients undergoing noncoronary cardiac surgery should be considered compulsory. Our study sought to evaluate the prevalence of obstructive coronary artery disease in patients undergoing valvular heart surgery and to utilize predictive methodology of concomitant obstructive coronary artery disease in these patients. Methods: The retrospective study cohort was derived from a tertiary care hospital registry of patients undergoing coronary angiogram prior to valvular heart operations. Decision tree, logistic regression, and support vector machine models were built to predict the probability of the appearance of obstructive coronary artery disease. A total of 367 patients from 2016 to 2019 were analyzed. Results: The mean age of the study population was 57.3±9.3 years, 45.2% of the patients were male. Of 367 patients, 76 (21%) patients had obstructive coronary artery disease. The decision tree, logistics regression, and support vector machine models had an area under the curve of 72% (95% CI: 62% - 81%), 67% (95% CI: 56% - 77%), and 78% (95% CI: 68% - 87%), respectively. Multivariate analysis indicated that hypertension (OR 1.98; P=0.032), diabetes (OR 2.32; P=0.040), age (OR 1.05; P=0.006), and typical angina (OR 5.46; P<0.001) had significant role in predicting the presence of obstructive coronary artery disease. Conclusion: Our study revealed that approximately one-fifth of patients who underwent valvular heart surgery had concomitant obstructive coronary artery disease. The support vector machine model showed the highest accuracy compared to the other model.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the demand for utilising telehealth as a major mode of healthcare delivery, with increasing interest in the use of tele-platforms for remote patient assessment. In this context, the use of smartphone technology to measure squat performance in people with and without femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome has not been reported yet. We developed a novel smartphone application, the TelePhysio app, which allows the clinician to remotely connect to the patient's device and measure their squat performance in real time using the smartphone inertial sensors. The aim of this study was to investigate the association and test-retest reliability of the TelePhysio app in measuring postural sway performance during a double-leg (DLS) and single-leg (SLS) squat task. In addition, the study investigated the ability of TelePhysio to detect differences in DLS and SLS performance between people with FAI and without hip pain. METHODS: A total of 30 healthy (nfemales = 12) young adults and 10 adults (nfemales = 2) with diagnosed FAI syndrome participated in the study. Healthy participants performed DLS and SLS on force plates in our laboratory, and remotely in their homes using the TelePhysio smartphone application. Sway measurements were compared using the centre of pressure (CoP) and smartphone inertial sensor data. A total of 10 participants with FAI (nfemales = 2) performed the squat assessments remotely. Four sway measurements in each axis (x, y, and z) were computed from the TelePhysio inertial sensors: (1) average acceleration magnitude from the mean (aam), (2) root-mean-square acceleration (rms), (3) range acceleration (r), and (4) approximate entropy (apen), with lower values indicating that the movement is more regular, repetitive, and predictable. Differences in TelePhysio squat sway data were compared between DLS and SLS, and between healthy and FAI adults, using analysis of variance with significance set at 0.05. RESULTS: The TelePhysio aam measurements on the x- and y-axes had significant large correlations with the CoP measurements (r = 0.56 and r = 0.71, respectively). The TelePhysio aam measurements demonstrated moderate to substantial between-session reliability values of 0.73 (95% CI 0.62-0.81), 0.85 (95% CI 0.79-0.91), and 0.73 (95% CI 0.62-0.82) for aamx, aamy, and aamz, respectively. The DLS of the FAI participants showed significantly lower aam and apen values in the medio-lateral direction compared to the healthy DLS, healthy SLS, and FAI SLS groups (aam = 0.13, 0.19, 0.29, and 0.29, respectively; and apen = 0.33, 0.45, 0.52, and 0.48, respectively). In the anterior-posterior direction, healthy DLS showed significantly greater aam values compared to the healthy SLS, FAI DLS, and FAI SLS groups (1.26, 0.61, 0.68, and 0.35, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The TelePhysio app is a valid and reliable method of measuring postural control during DLS and SLS tasks. The application is capable of distinguishing performance levels between DLS and SLS tasks, and between healthy and FAI young adults. The DLS task is sufficient to distinguish the level of performance between healthy and FAI adults. This study validates the use of smartphone technology as a tele-assessment clinical tool for remote squat assessment.
