RESUMO

In this study, we investigate the influence of montmorillonite (MMT) on the loading and release of Piper betle L. extract (PLE)-a medicinal herb containing active secondary metabolites with antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. MMT (1 %, 3 %, 5 %) was blended into the chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (CS/PVA) biocomposite film by the solution evaporation method, and then PLE was loaded onto this biocomposite using the immersion method. The tensile strength and the ability to absorb exudates of the CS/PVA film improved with the increase in MMT content. The MMT 3 % film was considered to have the best properties: good mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 27.44 ± 0.27 MPa and elongation at break of 14.57 ± 0.30 %, potential for wound dressing due to its ability to absorb wound exudate (swelling degree 61.70 ± 0.30 %) and a suitable water vapor transmission rate (1999 ± 47 g/m2·d). The presence of MMT (1 %, 3 %, 5 %) in the CS/PVA film led to an increase in the PLE loading efficiency of the films compared to the film without MMT, up to 1.65, 1.73, and 1.87 times, respectively. The MMT 3 % and 5 % films also exhibited a sustained PLE release effect for up to 24 h. MMT increased PLE bioavailability through bioactivity tests: antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus, antioxidant activity, effective healing of 2nd-degree burn wounds, and biocompatibility with the L929 fibroblasts cell line. The combination of physicochemical properties and biological activities proved that the MMT/PLE drug delivery system based on the CS/PVA biocomposite is promising for wound dressing.

The study investigated the effectiveness of Mg/Al LDH-zeolite (MALZ) in immobilizing exchangeable Cr (e-Cr) within the soil. The research systematically evaluated various variables affecting the immobilization of e-Cr in contaminated soil (CS), including soil pH levels (ranging from 5.0 to 9.0), different weight ratios of MALZ (1 %, 3 %, and 5 %), durations of differing incubation periods (15, 30 and 45 days), and different SM content levels (30 %, 50 %, and 70 %). The initial concentration of Cr in the CS was maintained at 50 mg/kg. The investigation findings revealed that the optimal conditions for immobilizing the e-Cr were a soil pH of 5.0, an MALZ weight ratio of 3 %, an incubation period of 30 days, and an SM level of 70 %. Under these ideal conditions, the percentage of e-Cr within the CS decreased significantly, from 87.49 % (45.64 mg/kg) in the control treatment (CT) to just 19.82 % (10.08 mg/kg) when incubated with MALZ. The primary mechanisms responsible for immobilizing the e-Cr onto MALZ included pore filling, reduction processes, co-precipitation, organic interactions and electrostatic attractions leading to the formation of carbonate-bound complexes such as Cr(VI)-carbonate, Cr(III)-carbonate, and organic complexes. Surface functional groups on MALZ, housing iron and aluminium oxyhydroxides and silicon and oxygen elements, expedited these procedures. This study provided a valuable understanding of the mitigation of soils contaminated with chromium and contributed to understanding the relations between MALZ and the e-Cr in the soil. The discoveries carry substantial consequences for the advancement of efficient remediation technologies.

Recommender systems are decision support systems that help users to identify items of relevance from a potentially large set of alternatives. In contrast to the mainstream recommendation approaches of collaborative filtering and content-based filtering, knowledge-based recommenders exploit semantic user preference knowledge, item knowledge, and recommendation knowledge, to identify user-relevant items which is of specific relevance when dealing with complex and high-involvement items. Such recommenders are primarily applied in scenarios where users specify (and revise) their preferences, and related recommendations are determined on the basis of constraints or attribute-level similarity metrics. In this article, we provide an overview of the existing state-of-the-art in knowledge-based recommender systems. Different related recommendation techniques are explained on the basis of a working example from the domain of survey software services. On the basis of our analysis, we outline different directions for future research.

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus are major bacterial causes of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) globally, leading to substantial morbidity and mortality. The rapid increase of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in these pathogens poses significant challenges for their effective antibiotic therapy. In low-resourced settings, patients with LRTIs are prescribed antibiotics empirically while awaiting several days for culture results. Rapid pathogen and AMR gene detection could prompt optimal antibiotic use and improve outcomes. METHODS: Here, we developed multiplex quantitative real-time PCR using EvaGreen dye and melting curve analysis to rapidly identify six major pathogens and fourteen AMR genes directly from respiratory samples. The reproducibility, linearity, limit of detection (LOD) of real-time PCR assays for pathogen detection were evaluated using DNA control mixes and spiked tracheal aspirate. The performance of RT-PCR assays was subsequently compared with the gold standard, conventional culture on 50 tracheal aspirate and sputum specimens of ICU patients. RESULTS: The sensitivity of RT-PCR assays was 100% for K. pneumoniae, A. baumannii, P. aeruginosa, E. coli and 63.6% for S. aureus and the specificity ranged from 87.5% to 97.6%. The kappa correlation values of all pathogens between the two methods varied from 0.63 to 0.95. The limit of detection of target bacteria was 1600 CFU/ml. The quantitative results from the PCR assays demonstrated 100% concordance with quantitative culture of tracheal aspirates. Compared to culture, PCR assays exhibited higher sensitivity in detecting mixed infections and S. pneumoniae. There was a high level of concordance between the detection of AMR gene and AMR phenotype in single infections. CONCLUSIONS: Our multiplex quantitative RT-PCR assays are fast and simple, but sensitive and specific in detecting six bacterial pathogens of LRTIs and their antimicrobial resistance genes and should be further evaluated for clinical utility.

The insect larvae Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis have recently been researched as a nutritious food source and concentrated on their environmental impacts. Therefore, their gut microbiota has been studied to elucidate their effects and roles on the environment. Of the abundance of bacterial genus identified based on the 16S rRNA genes from isolates of the gut of insect larva Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis, six of the prominent genus were identified as Bacillus (40.2%), Cellulosimicrobium (33.5%), Microbacterium (2.8%), Streptomyces (3%), Krasilnikoviella (17.5%), and Isoptericola (3%) and their similarity of 16S rRNA blast changed from 99 to 100%. Cellulosimicrobium protaetiae BI34T showed strong denitrification and cellulose degradation activity. The newly complete genome sequence of BI34T and the genomes of five species was published in the genus Cellulosimicrobium with emphasis on the denitrification and secondary metabolite genes. In order to elucidate the relationship between the strain BI34T and the host insect larva, the whole-genome sequence was analyzed and compared with the genomes of five strains in the same genus, Cellulosimicrobium, loaded from GenBank. Our results revealed the composition of the gut microbiota of the insect larvae and analyzed the genomic data for the new strain to predict its characteristics and to understand the nitrogen metabolism pathway.

Background: Knowledge and attitudes of healthcare professionals are significant factors that affect the reporting of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). No previous research has examined the predictors of knowledge and attitudes toward ADR reporting in Vietnam. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the factors (ie, demographic and job-related characteristics) associated with inadequate knowledge and negative attitudes toward ADR reporting in a Vietnamese public hospital. Methods: A survey recruited a cross-sectional sample of 511 healthcare professionals (with a response rate of 92.9%) at a public hospital in Vinh Long province, Vietnam, from December 2022 to February 2023, using a self-administered questionnaire. Factors related to knowledge and attitudes toward ADR reporting were identified using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results: Pharmacists had significantly lower knowledge scores (mean = 5.86) than medical practitioners (7.24) and nurses (6.72). Additionally, pharmacists' attitudes scored significantly lower (34.61) than those of medical practitioners (37.21) and nurses (36.86). Multivariate logistic regression showed that educational level, healthcare profession, monthly on-call shifts, and number of direct patient interactions were factors associated with a lower level of knowledge regarding ADR reporting. Additionally, age group and healthcare profession were identified as factors associated with negative attitudes toward ADR reporting among healthcare workers. Conclusions: Our study identified several factors associated with lower levels of knowledge and negative attitudes toward ADR reporting among healthcare workers in Vietnam. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions and education programs to improve healthcare workers' knowledge and attitudes toward ADR reporting.

PURPOSE: The study aimed to protect patients' skin against ionizing irradiation during radiotherapy by using astaxanthin-encapsulated nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC-ATX). MATERIALS AND METHODS: NLC-ATX was prepared by a combined method of hot homogenization and sonication. Cytotoxicity of NLC-ATX was evaluated by MTT colorimetric assay. The in vitro radioprotection of NLC-ATX for human fibroblast (HF) cells was investigated based on the level of ROS (reactive oxygen species), DNA damage, and cell death caused by X-irradiation. In addition, the in vivo radioprotection was evaluated based on the appearance and histological structure of the irradiated skin. RESULTS: NLC-ATX was successfully prepared, with a mean particle size, zeta potential, and encapsulation efficiency of 114.4 nm, -34.1 mV, and 85.67%, respectively. Compared to the control, NLC-ATX, at an optimum ATX concentration under in vitro condition, reduced the amount of generated ROS and DNA damage of 81.6% and 41.6%, respectively, after X-radiation, resulting in a significant decrease in cell death by 62.69%. Under in vivo condition, after the 9th day of X-irradiation (equivalent to an accumulated dose of 14 Gy), the dorsal skin of five out of six NLC-ATX-untreated mice exhibited grade-1 skin damage, according to CTCAE v5.0, while treatment with NLC-ATX protected 6/6 mice from acute skin damage. Moreover, on the 28th day after the first X-irradiation, the histological images illustrated that NLC-ATX at an ATX concentration of 0.25 µg/mL exhibited good recovery of the skin, with barely any difference noted in the collagen fibers and sebaceous glands compared to normal skin. CONCLUSIONS: NLC-ATX shows potential for application in skin protection against adverse effects of ionizing rays during radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Understanding cancer treatment-related cardiovascular (CV) events is important for cancer care; however, comprehensive evaluation of CV events in patients with lung cancer is limited. This study aimed to assess the cumulative incidence and associated risks of various CV event types in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: A total of 7868 individuals aged 40 years and older, recently diagnosed with NSCLC (2007-2018), were assessed with data obtained from the National Cancer Center, Korea. This study included nine types of CV events. A 2-year cumulative incidence function (CIF) of CV events was estimated, with death as a competing event. The associated risks were assessed by subdistribution hazard ratio (sHR) in the Fine-Gray competing risks model. RESULTS: CV events were observed in 7.8% of patients with NSCLC, with the most frequently observed types being atrial fibrillation and flutter (AF) (2.7%), venous thromboembolic disease (2.0%), and cerebrovascular disease (CeVD) (1.5%). Overall, all CV events were highest in the group treated with systemic therapy (CIF, 10.6%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 9.5%-11.8%), followed by those treated with surgery (CIF, 10.0%; 95% CI, 8.6%-11.6%); the incidence of AF (CIF, 5.7%; 95% CI, 4.6%-7.0%) was highest in patients treated with surgery. Individuals treated with systemic therapy were found to exhibit a higher CeVD risk than those treated with surgery (sHR, 4.12; 95% CI, 1.66-10.23). Among the patients who underwent surgery, those with lobectomy and pneumonectomy had a higher AF risk (vs. wedge resection/segmentectomy; sHR, 7.79; 95% CI, 1.87-32.42; sHR, 8.10; 95% CI, 1.60-40.89). CONCLUSIONS: These findings revealed treatment-related CV event risks in patients with NSCLC, which suggests that the risk of AF in surgery and CeVD in systemic therapy should be paid more attention to achieve a better prognosis and improve cancer survivorship outcomes. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Atrial fibrillation and flutter (AF) is the most common cardiovascular event, particularly at a high risk in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) undergoing surgery. Patients receiving surgery with poor performance status, diagnosed with regional stage, and undergoing lobectomy or pneumonectomy are at a high risk of AF. Systemic/radiotherapy is associated with cerebrovascular and ischemic heart disease in patients with NSCLC.

Multidrug resistance to pathogens has posed a severe threat to public health. The threat could be addressed by antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) with broad-spectrum suppression. In this study, Brevibacillus halotolerans 7WMA2, isolated from marine sediment, produced AMPs against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The AMPs were precipitated by ammonium sulfate 30% (w/v) from culture broth and dialyzed by a 1 kDa membrane. Tryptone Soy Agar (TSA) was used for the cultivation and resulted in the largest bacteria-inhibiting zones under aerobic conditions at 25 °C, 48 h. An SDS-PAGE gel overlay test revealed that strain 7WMA2 could produce AMPs of 5-10 kDa and showed no degradation when held at 121 °C for 30 min at a wide pH 2-12 range. The AMPs did not cause toxicity to HeLa cells with concentrations up to 500 µg/mL while increasing the arbitrary unit up to eight times. The study showed that the AMPs produced were unique, with broad-spectrum antimicrobial ability.

Sustainability development goals (SDGs) are regarded as a universal call to action with the overall objectives of planet protection, ending of poverty, and ensuring peace and prosperity for all people. In order to achieve these objectives, different AI technologies play a major role. Specifically, recommender systems can provide support for organizations and individuals to achieve the defined goals. Recommender systems integrate AI technologies such as machine learning, explainable AI (XAI), case-based reasoning, and constraint solving in order to find and explain user-relevant alternatives from a potentially large set of options. In this article, we summarize the state of the art in applying recommender systems to support the achievement of sustainability development goals. In this context, we discuss open issues for future research.

This study aims to evaluate the radioprotective effects of liposomes encapsulating curcumin (Lip-CUR), silibinin (Lip-SIL), α-tocopherol (Lip-TOC), quercetin (Lip-QUE) and resveratrol (Lip-RES) in alleviating the adverse effects of ionising irradiation on human lymphoctyes and skin cells in radiotherapy. Liposomes encapsulating the above natural radioprotectants (Lip-NRPs) were prepared by the film hydration method combined with sonication. Their radioprotective effects for the cells against X-irradiation was evaluated using trypan-blue assay and γ-H2AX assay. All prepared Lip-NRPs had a mean diameter less than 240 nm, polydispersity index less than 0.32, and zeta potential more than -23 mV. Among them, the radioprotective effect of Lip-RES was lowest, while that of Lip-QUE was highest. Lip-SIL also exhibited a high radioprotective effect despite its low DPPH-radical scavenging activity (12.9%). The radioprotective effects of Lip-NRPs do not solely depend on the free radical scavenging activity of NRPs but also on their ability to activate cellular mechanisms.

This study deployed ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE), combined with natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), to extract phenolics and flavonoids from the black mulberry fruit, and the antioxidant activity was examined. The extraction yields of NADES-based UAE were assessed based on the yields of phenolics and flavonoids extracted from the black mulberry fruit. This study selected the molar ratios of hydrogen bond acceptors (HBA) and hydrogen bond donors HBD at 1:2 from previous studies. Choline chloride-lactic acid showed the highest solubility with phenolics and flavonoids among NADES systems. One-factor experiments evaluated the effect of UAE conditions (liquid-to-solid ratio (LSR), water content in NADES, temperature, and time) on TPC, TFC, and antioxidant activity. The suitable NADES-based UAE conditions for extracting phenolics and flavonoids from the black mulberry fruit were 60 ml/g of LSR, 40% water content, 70 °C, and 15 min. Response surface methodology with the Box-Behnken design model optimized the NADES-based UAE process based on response (TPC, TFC, ABTS, OH, and DPPH). The optimal conditions for the NADES-based UAE process were 70 ml/g of LSR, 38.9% water content in NADES, 67.9 °C, and 24.2 min of extraction time. The predicted values of the Box-Behnken design were compatible with the experimental results. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to survey the surface of black mulberry fruit with and without sonication. SEM can assist in demonstrating the destructive effect of NADES and ultrasonic waves on material surfaces. SEM findings indicated the high surface destruction capacity of NADES, which partially contributed to a superior extraction yield of NADES than conventional organic solvents. The study proposes an efficient and green method for extracting bioactive compounds from black mulberry fruits. The black mulberry fruit extracts can be applied to meat preservation and beverages with high antioxidants.

The use of in vitro tissue culture for herbal medicines has been recognized as a valuable source of botanical secondary metabolites. The tissue culture of ginseng species is used in the production of bioactive compounds such as phenolics, polysaccharides, and especially ginsenosides, which are utilized in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. This review paper focuses on the in vitro culture of Panax ginseng and accumulation of ginsenosides. In vitro culture has been applied to study organogenesis and biomass culture, and is involved in direct organogenesis for rooting and shooting from explants and in indirect morphogenesis for somatic embryogenesis via the callus, which is a mass of disorganized cells. Biomass production was conducted with different types of tissue cultures, such as adventitious roots, cell suspension, and hairy roots, and subsequently on a large scale in a bioreactor. This review provides the cumulative knowledge of biotechnological methods to increase the ginsenoside resources of P. ginseng. In addition, ginsenosides are summarized at enhanced levels of activity and content with elicitor treatment, together with perspectives of new breeding tools which can be developed in P. ginseng in the future.

In the effort of isolating novel microbial species, the strain PL0132T was isolated from a fallen leaf under fresh water at a stream, which glided when grown on a tap water medium (without nutrients). The strain was determined to be Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, and rod-shaped, which grew optimally at 25 °C, pH 6-7, and the strain tolerates 1% (w/v) NaCl concentration. The complete genome of strain PL0132T comprises one contig with a sequencing depth of 76×, consisting of 8,853,064 base pairs and the genomic DNA G + C content was 46.7% (genome). 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain PL0132T represents a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes and is affiliated with the genus Spirosoma. Based on genomic, phenotypic, and chemotaxonomic characteristics, the strain PL0132T represents a novel species of the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma foliorum sp. nov. is proposed (= KCTC 72228 T = InaCC B1447T).

Chitosanases play a significant part in the hydrolysis of chitosan to form chitooligosaccharides (COS) that possess diverse biological activities. This study aimed to enhance the productivity of Paenibacillus elgii TKU051 chitosanase by fermentation from chitinous fishery wastes. The ideal parameters for achieving maximum chitosanase activity were determined: a squid pens powder amount of 5.278% (w/v), an initial pH value of 8.93, an incubation temperature of 38 °C, and an incubation duration of 5.73 days. The resulting chitosanase activity of the culture medium was 2.023 U/mL. A chitosanase with a molecular weight of 25 kDa was isolated from the culture medium of P. elgii TKU051 and was biochemically characterized. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry analysis revealed that P. elgii TKU051 chitosanase exhibited a maximum amino acid identity of 43% with a chitosanase of Bacillus circulans belonging to the glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 46. P. elgii TKU051 chitosanase demonstrated optimal activity at pH 5.5 while displaying remarkable stability within the pH range of 5.0 to 9.0. The enzyme displayed maximum efficiency at 60 °C and demonstrated considerable stability at temperatures ≤40 °C. The presence of Mn2+ positively affected the activity of the enzyme, while the presence of Cu2+ had a negative effect. Thin-layer chromatography analysis demonstrated that P. elgii TKU051 chitosanase exhibited an endo-type cleavage pattern and hydrolyzed chitosan with 98% degree of deacetylation to yield (GlcN)2 and (GlcN)3. The enzymatic properties of P. elgii TKU051 chitosanase render it a promising candidate for application in the production of COS.

This research extracted phenolics and terpenoids from Abelmoschus sagittifolius (Kurz) Merr roots using natural deep eutectic solvent-based novel extraction techniques. Twelve natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were produced for recovering phenolics and terpenoids. Citric acid/glucose and lactic acid/glucose, with a molar ratio of 2:1, were determined as the most appropriate NADESs for extracting phenolics and terpenoids, respectively. Afterward, the proper conditions for NADES-based ultrasonic-assisted and microwave-assisted extraction were investigated. Then, the time and liquid-to-solid ratios of ultrasonic- and microwave-combined extraction methods and the sequence of ultrasound and microwave treatments were examined. The conditions of ultrasonic-assisted extraction were 40 mL/g liquid-to-solid ratio, 40% water content, 30°C, 5 min, and 600 W ultrasonic power for the highest terpenoid recovery at 69 ± 2 mg UA/g dw, while 150 W ultrasonic power was suitable for phenolic recovery at 9.56 ± 0.17 mg GAE/g dw. The conditions of microwave-assisted extraction were 50 mL/g liquid-to-solid ratio, 20% water content, 400 W microwave power, and 2 min to acquire the highest phenolics and terpenoids at 22.13 ± 0.75 mg GAE/g dw and 90 ± 1 mg UA/g dw, respectively. Under appropriate conditions, the biological activities, phenolic content, and terpenoid content of obtained extracts from four extraction methods, including ultrasonic-assisted, microwave-assisted, ultrasonic-microwave-assisted, and microwave-ultrasonic-assisted extraction, were compared to select the most proper method. The conditions of ultrasonic-microwave-assisted extraction were 40 mL/g liquid-to-solid ratio, 5 min sonication, and 1 min microwave irradiation to obtain the highest phenolic and terpenoid contents (27.07 ± 0.27 mg GAE/g dw and 111 ± 3 mg UA/g dw, respectively). Ultrasonic-microwave-assisted extraction showed the highest phenolic content, terpenoid content, and biological activities among the four extraction techniques. The changes in the surface morphology were determined using scanning electron microscopy. This study demonstrated that ultrasonic-microwave-assisted extraction was an effective and sustainable method in food and pharmaceutical industries for recovering phenolics and terpenoids from Abelmoschus sagittifolius (Kurz) Merr.

Recent advances in two-dimensional semiconductors, particularly molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), have enabled the fabrication of flexible electronic devices with outstanding mechanical flexibility. Previous approaches typically involved the synthesis of MoS2 on a rigid substrate at a high temperature followed by the transfer to a flexible substrate onto which the device is fabricated. A recurring drawback with this methodology is the fact that flexible substrates have a lower melting temperature than the MoS2 growth process, and that the transfer process degrades the electronic properties of MoS2. Here we report a strategy for directly synthesizing high-quality and high-crystallinity MoS2 monolayers on polymers and ultrathin glass substrates (thickness ~30 µm) at ~150 °C using metal-organic chemical vapour deposition. By avoiding the transfer process, the MoS2 quality is preserved. On flexible field-effect transistors, we achieve a mobility of 9.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 and a positive threshold voltage of +5 V, which is essential for reducing device power consumption. Moreover, under bending conditions, our logic circuits exhibit stable operation while phototransistors can detect light over a wide range of wavelengths from 405 nm to 904 nm.

Bacterial plant pathogens must cope with various environmental conditions and defenses from their hosts for colonization and infection. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) play critical roles in a variety of cellular processes, such as the maintenance of cellular homeostasis in response to environmental stress. However, the significance of HSP40 family protein DnaJ in virulence of plant pathogenic bacteria has not yet been explored. To elucidate the function of DnaJ in Pseudomonas cichorii JBC1 (PcJBC1) virulence, we generated dnaJ-deficient (JBC1ΔdnaJ) mutant using CRISPR-CAS9. The disease severity by JBC1ΔdnaJ was significantly reduced compared with wild-type (WT) and dnaJ-complemented (JBC1ΔdnaJ + pdnaJ) strain. The defect of DnaJ suppressed siderophore production, extracellular DNA (eDNA) release, biofilm formation, and swarming motility and made the strain sensitive to stresses such as heat and H2O2. The supplementation of eDNA recovered the amount of biofilm formation by JBC1ΔdnaJ. Our results indicate that DnaJ is a key player in the survival and colonization of bacterial plant pathogens on plant surfaces as well as bacterial responses to abiotic and biotic stresses, which are determinative to cause disease. These findings can broaden our understanding of plant and bacterial pathogen interactions.

Forests, comprising 31% of the Earth's surface, play pivotal roles in regulating the carbon, water, and energy cycles. Despite being far less diverse than angiosperms, gymnosperms account for over 50% of the global woody biomass production. To sustain growth and development, gymnosperms have evolved the capacity to sense and respond to cyclical environmental signals, such as changes in photoperiod and seasonal temperature, which initiate growth (spring and summer) and dormancy (fall and winter). Cambium, the lateral meristem responsible for wood formation, is reactivated through a complex interplay among hormonal, genetic, and epigenetic factors. Temperature signals perceived in early spring induce the synthesis of several phytohormones, including auxins, cytokinins, and gibberellins, which in turn reactivate cambium cells. Additionally, microRNA-mediated genetic and epigenetic pathways modulate cambial function. As a result, the cambium becomes active during the summer, resulting in active secondary xylem (i.e., wood) production, and starts to become inactive in autumn. This review summarizes and discusses recent findings regarding the climatic, hormonal, genetic, and epigenetic regulation of wood formation in gymnosperm trees (i.e., conifers) in response to seasonal changes.

RESUMO

In this review, we present a short overview of the development of sol-gel glasses for application in the field of photonics, with a focus on some of the most interesting results obtained by our group and collaborators in that area. Our main attention is devoted to silicate glasses of different compositions, which are characterized by specific optical and spectroscopic properties for various applications, ranging from luminescent systems to light-confining structures and memristors. In particular, the roles of rare-earth doping, matrix composition, the densification process and the fabrication protocol on the structural, optical and spectroscopic properties of the developed photonic systems are discussed through appropriate examples. Some achievements in the fabrication of oxide sol-gel optical waveguides and of micro- and nanostructures for the confinement of light are also briefly discussed.
