RESUMO

A compact flexible multi-frequency antenna for smart portable and flexible devices is presented. The antenna consists of a coplanar waveguide-fed slotted circular patch connected to a rectangular secondary resonator (stub). A thin low-loss substrate is used for flexibility, and a rectangular stub in the feedline is deployed to attain wide operational bandwidth. A rectangular slot is etched in the middle of the circular patch, and a p-i-n diode is placed at its center. The frequency reconfigurability is achieved through switching the diode that distributes the current by changing the antenna's electrical length. For the ON state, the antenna operates in the UWB region for -10 dB impedance bandwidth from 2.76 to 8.21 GHz. For the OFF state of the diode, the antenna operates at the ISM band (2.45/5.8 GHz), WLAN band (5.2 GHz), and lower X-band (8 GHz) with a minimum gain of 2.49 dBi and a maximum gain of 5.8 dBi at the 8 GHz band. Moreover, the antenna retains its performance in various bending conditions. The proposed antenna is suitable for modern miniaturized wireless electronic devices such as wearables, health monitoring sensors, mobile Internet devices, and laptops that operate at multiple frequency bands.

We have studied water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), a non-native nuisance plant found in the in San Francisco Bay Delta region, for its potential to phytoremediate mercury. Mercury is a common contaminant in San Francisco Bay Area waters because of gold mining activities. In this study, speciation of mercury in hyacinth roots and shoots, rates of mercury uptake by hyacinths in the laboratory, and mercury levels near the Big Break Region in the Delta were studied. In the speciation studies, Hg L3 edge X-ray absorption spectroscopic analysis of Hg model compounds and water hyacinth roots and shoots revealed that Hg was initially bound ionically to oxygen ligands in roots, most likely to carboxylate groups, and was bound covalently to sulfur groups in shoots. In laboratory uptake studies, we found that water hyacinths grown in 1 ppm Hg and one-quarter strength Hoagland's solution accumulated a maximum of 0.20 ppm in shoots and 16.0 ppm in roots, both reaching maximum concentrations after approximately 16 days. Mercury concentrations were found to be 0.26 +/- 0.20 ppm in the water and 0.86 +/- 1.70 ppm in sediment at Big Break. It was proposed that water hyacinths have the potential to phytoremediate mercury in the water at Big Break if the current herbicide treatments are replaced by physical removal.

The introduction of heavy atoms into protein crystals is sometimes rendered difficult and tedious because of the poor specificity of the available reagents for particular target residues. On the other hand, transition organometallic chemistry offers an almost untouched field for this purpose. In particular, Fischer-type metallocarbene complexes of the general formula (CO)5W=C(OR1)R2 may be attractive reagents because they contain the heavy element tungsten and specifically target amino groups to form stable, covalent aminocarbene adducts. With a small protein such as hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) with a limited number of potential binding sites, it was possible to form protein-aminocarbene conjugates that have an average of one aminocarbene moiety per protein molecule. RP-HPLC combined with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) MS analysis of the conjugates revealed that they were mixtures of the native protein, monoaminocarbenes and diaminocarbenes. Tryptic proteolysis experiments performed on the protein conjugates combined with MALDI-TOF-MS analysis of the aminocarbenic peptides allowed us to determine that lysines 13, 33, 97 and 116 were involved in the reaction of HEWL with (CO)5W=C(OMe)Me.
