RESUMO

The lithiation/delithiation properties of α-Si3 N4 and ß-Si3 N4 are compared and the carbon coating effects are examined. Then, ß-Si3 N4 at various fractions is used as the secondary phase in a Si anode to modify the electrode properties. The incorporated ß-Si3 N4 decreases the crystal size of Si and introduces a new NSiO species at the ß-Si3 N4 /Si interface. The nitrogen from the milled ß-Si3 N4 diffuses into the surface carbon coating during the carbonization heat treatment, forming pyrrolic nitrogen and CNO species. The synergistic effects of combining ß-Si3 N4 and Si phases on the specific capacity are confirmed. The operando X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data indicate that ß-Si3 N4 is partially consumed during lithiation to form a favorable Li3 N species at the electrode. However, the crystalline structure of the hexagonal ß-Si3 N4 is preserved after prolonged cycling, which prevents electrode agglomeration and performance deterioration. The carbon-coated ß-Si3 N4 /Si composite anode shows specific capacities of 1068 and 480 mAh g-1 at 0.2 and 5 A g-1 , respectively. A full cell consisting of the carbon-coated ß-Si3 N4 /Si anode and a LiNi0.8 Co0.1 Mn0.1 O2 cathode is constructed and its properties are evaluated. The potential of the proposed composite anodes for Li-ion battery applications is demonstrated.

RESUMO

Calcium phosphate (Ca-P) surface coating is a simple but effective way to enhance both corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of ZK60 magnesium alloy. However, cell compatibility on different Ca-P layers coated on ZK60 alloy has seldom been investigated. In this study, the effects of type, morphology and corrosion protection of several Ca-P coatings formed at pH 6.5, 7.8 and 10.2 on cell behavior were examined by using an osteoblastic cell line MC3T3-E1. Furthermore,in vivobehavior in rabbits of the alloy coated with the optimum Ca-P layer was also studied. It was found that the surface factors governed the cell morphology and density. The coating morphology plays a dominant role in these surface factors. The sample coated at pH 7.8 showed the best cellular biocompatibility, suggesting that the hydroxyapatite (HAp) layer formed at pH 7.8 was the optimum coating. In rabbits, this optimum coating enhanced remarkably the corrosion resistance of the alloy. During implantation, the outermost crystals of the HAp coating were shortened and thinned due to the dissolution of HAp caused by the body fluid of the rabbits. It is indicated that ZK60 alloy coated at pH 7.8 can be applied as a biodegradable implant.

RESUMO

This study proposes an approach based on the gamma-ray transmission technique to accurately determine the thickness of material plates using a low-activity source. For this purpose, we have set up an experimental configuration without collimators for both source and detector. Besides, a Monte Carlo simulation model using MCNP6 code has been created with the same geometric parameters as the empirical one. The calibration curves of thickness measurement were constructed for various energies of the incident gamma rays in the range of 123-661.7 keV and two materials of aluminum and copper using Monte Carlo simulation data. The thickness of the material plate was determined by applying experimental data to a known calibration curve. For a given material and gamma energy, the measurable thickness range (MTR) was estimated by investigating the dependence of the expected relative error on the thickness of the material plate. The obtained results show that the approach is feasible with the relative deviation between the measured and reference thicknesses of mostly less than 2% and the relative uncertainty of less than 3%. Such an approach could suggest a practical and cost-effective evaluation tool for optimizing the configuration to achieve a given accuracy corresponding to each type of material.

RESUMO

Auditory prostheses provide an opportunity for rehabilitation of hearing-impaired patients. Speech intelligibility can be used to estimate the extent to which the auditory prosthesis improves the user's speech comprehension. Although behavior-based speech intelligibility is the gold standard, precise evaluation is limited due to its subjectiveness. Here, we used a convolutional neural network to predict speech intelligibility from electroencephalography (EEG). Sixty-four-channel EEGs were recorded from 87 adult participants with normal hearing. Sentences spectrally degraded by a 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 8-channel vocoder were used to set relatively low speech intelligibility conditions. A Korean sentence recognition test was used. The speech intelligibility scores were divided into 41 discrete levels ranging from 0 to 100%, with a step of 2.5%. Three scores, namely 30.0, 37.5, and 40.0%, were not collected. The speech features, i.e., the speech temporal envelope (ENV) and phoneme (PH) onset, were used to extract continuous-speech EEGs for speech intelligibility prediction. The deep learning model was trained by a dataset of event-related potentials (ERP), correlation coefficients between the ERPs and ENVs, between the ERPs and PH onset, or between ERPs and the product of the multiplication of PH and ENV (PHENV). The speech intelligibility prediction accuracies were 97.33% (ERP), 99.42% (ENV), 99.55% (PH), and 99.91% (PHENV). The models were interpreted using the occlusion sensitivity approach. While the ENV models' informative electrodes were located in the occipital area, the informative electrodes of the phoneme models, i.e., PH and PHENV, were based on the occlusion sensitivity map located in the language processing area. Of the models tested, the PHENV model obtained the best speech intelligibility prediction accuracy. This model may promote clinical prediction of speech intelligibility with a comfort speech intelligibility test.

RESUMO

Infant botulism is a rare but sometimes life-threatening toxemia caused by ingestion of Clostridium botulinum spores. Although cases of infant botulism have probably occurred in Vietnam in the past, they have never been diagnosed and reported. Herein, we report the isolation of C. botulinum type A(B) from the stool of a 10-month-old infant during hospitalization.

RESUMO

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are two water- and foodborne protozoan parasites that can cause diarrheal diseases. Poor microbial quality, sanitation conditions, and hygiene practices at exposure to biogas wastewater are important risk factors for human and animal infection. This study highlights the presence and level of both parasites in the environment in relation to biogas waste reuse in Vietnam. A total of 239 samples were collected from different types of samples in the studied districts in Bac Giang province in 2020 via direct immunofluorescent detection to study the occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. (oo)cysts. Among the samples, Cryptosporidium was found in 19 (7.9%) with concentration from 1.104 to 3.105 oocysts/100 mL, while Giardia in 40 (16.7%) with concentration from 1.104 to 2.106 cysts/100 mL, respectively. In detail, the results show that the percentages of positive detection of Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. in influent, effluent, sewage canal, and vegetables were 13.1% (11/84), 6.0% (5/83), 15.4% (2/13) and 5.9% (1/17) and 26.2% (22/84), 7.2% (6/83), 7.7% (1/13) and 5.9% (1/17), respectively. The results show a trend of decreasing Cryptosporidium and Giardia densities, without statistical significance. Although these parasites decreased after biogas treatment, the remaining loads observed in biogas effluent can reach the watercourses and soil receiving it. Further investigations are needed to contribute to a general understanding of the risk of protozoan parasites, as well as strategies to control and reduce the contamination of environmental water sources and plants and reduce the burden of the pathogens in biogas wastewater in Vietnam.

RESUMO

Tigecycline is a last-resort antimicrobial against carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE). However, mobile tigecycline resistance genes, tet(X) and tmexCD-toprJ, have emerged in China and have spread possibly worldwide. Tet(X) family proteins function as tigecycline-inactivating enzymes, and TMexCD-TOprJ complexes function as efflux pumps for tigecycline. Here, to the best of our knowledge we report a CPE isolate harboring both emerging tigecycline resistance factors for the first time. A carbapenem- and tigecycline-resistant Klebsiella aerogenes strain, NUITM-VK5, was isolated from an urban drainage in Vietnam in 2021, and a plasmid, pNUITM-VK5_mdr, cocarrying tet(X) and tmexCD3-toprJ3 along with the carbapenemase gene blaNDM-4 was identified in NUITM-VK5. pNUITM-VK5_mdr was transferred to Escherichia coli by conjugation and simultaneously conferred high-level resistance against multiple antimicrobials, including carbapenems and tigecycline. An efflux pump inhibitor reduced TMexCD3-TOprJ3-mediated tigecycline resistance, suggesting that both tigecycline resistance factors independently and additively contribute to the high-level resistance. The plasmid had the IncX3 and IncC replicons and was estimated to be a hybrid of plasmids with different backbones. Unlike IncX3 plasmids, IncC plasmids are stably maintained in an extremely broad range of bacterial hosts in humans, animals, and the environment. Thus, the future global spread of multidrug resistance plasmids such as pNUITM-VK5_mdr poses a public health crisis. IMPORTANCE Tigecycline is important as a last-resort antimicrobial and effective against antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, such as carbapenem-producing Enterobacterales (CPE), whose infections are difficult to treat with antimicrobials. Since 2019, mobile tigecycline resistance genes, tet(X) and tmexCD-toprJ, and their variants have been reported mainly from China, and it has become important to understand their epidemiological situation and detailed genetic mechanisms. In this study, we identified a bacterial isolate coharboring tet(X) and tmexCD-toprJ on the same plasmid. A Klebsiella aerogenes isolate in Vietnam carried both these tigecycline resistance genes on a transferable plasmid leading to high-level resistance to multiple clinically important antimicrobials, including carbapenem and tigecycline, and could actually transfer the plasmid to other bacteria. The spread of such a multidrug resistance plasmid among bacterial pathogens should be of great concern because there are few antimicrobials to combat bacteria that have acquired the plasmid.

RESUMO

This study aims to evaluate the sensitivity of the measurement of liquid density at different scattering angles using a gamma scattering technique. To perform this, the linear calibration curves of the ratio R (R is the ratio of the area under a single scattering peak for a liquid relative to that for water) versus the liquid density were constructed at different scattering angles. The sensitivity of the measurement is defined as the slope coefficient of these linear calibration curves. The results obtained from the Monte Carlo simulation data showed that the sensitivity of the measurement at different scattering angles including 70°, 80°, 90°, 100°, 110°, 120°, 130°, and 140° changes in the range from 0.44 to 0.48. Also, the results obtained from the experiment when performing the measurements at scattering angles of 90°, 100°, 110°, and 120° ranged from 0.46 to 0.48. This confirms that the dependence of the sensitivity of the measurement on scattering angle is insignificant. Besides, for every experimental dataset, we used each of 8 above-obtained calibration curves, in turn, to determine the densities of 8 liquids which yield the relative deviation between the measured density and the reference one is mostly less than 5%, the relative deviation of remaining cases (64 of 256 measurements) is in the range of 5.0%-9.9%.

RESUMO

Development of a robust technical assistance system is an essential component of a sustainable HIV response. Vietnam's National HIV Program is transitioning from a largely donor-funded programme to one primarily supported by domestic resources. Telehealth interventions are increasingly being used for training, mentoring and expert consultation in high-resource settings and hold significant potential for use as a tool to build HIV health worker capacity in low and middle-income countries. We designed, implemented and scaled up a novel HIV telehealth programme for Vietnam, with the goal of building a sustainable training model to support the country's HIV workforce needs. Over a 4-year period, HIV telehealth programmes were initiated in 17 public institutions with participation of nearly 700 clinical sites across 62 of the 63 provinces in the country. The telehealth programme was used to deliver certificate training courses, provide clinical mentoring and case-based learning, support programme implementation, provide coaching in quality improvement and disseminate new guidelines and policies. Programme evaluation demonstrated improved health worker self-reported competence in HIV care and treatment and high satisfaction among the programme participants. Lessons learnt from Vietnam's experience with telehealth can inform country programmes looking to develop a sustainable approach to HIV technical assistance and health worker capacity building.

RESUMO

In present work, the validity of the virtual point detector (VPD) model for the NaI(Tl) detectors is studied and confirmed in the photon energy range of 60-1408 keV. The full energy peak efficiency (FEPE) of two NaI(Tl) detectors, which have scintillation crystal dimensions of 5.08 × 5.08 cm and 7.62 × 7.62 cm respectively, is measured for "point-like" radioactive sources on the symmetry axis with source-to-detector distances in the range of 2-40 cm. It is found that the VPD model is valid to fit too well to the experimental FEPE for the two surveyed NaI(Tl) detectors. The dependence of the VPD position on the incident photon energy for the NaI(Tl) detectors with different scintillation crystal dimensions is shown based on experimental data. A semi-empirical equation involving incident photon energy and source-to-detector distance is proposed to calculate the FEPE for the NaI(Tl) detectors. The calculated results for the two surveyed NaI(Tl) detectors by this equation are in a good agreement with experimental results for photon energies in the range of 344-1408 keV. However, the difference between experimental and calculated results is quite significant for source-to-detector close geometries for photon energies lower than 344 keV.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the rate of response to hepatitis B (HBV) vaccination among HIV-infected adults in Vietnam. METHODS: We retrospectively abstracted data from a cohort of HIV-infected adults who had received HBV vaccine at an HIV clinic in Hanoi. We examined demographic, clinical and laboratory factors for associations with development of a protective antibody (Ab) response following vaccination (defined as 'responders' with anti-HBs >10 IU/L). RESULTS: Out of 302 HIV-infected patients who completed the vaccine series and follow-up serology testing, 189 (62.6%) had a positive protective Ab response. Female patients had a higher response rate compared to male patients (71.4% vs 56.8%, P=0.01). Among responders, mean CD4 T cell count was 309 cells/µL as compared to 204 cells/µL in non-responders (P<0.0001). On multivariable analysis, CD4 T cell count prior to vaccination was the only factor independently associated with a positive Ab response. Compared to patients with a count less than 100 cells/µL, those with a CD4 T cell count between 100 and 200 cells/µL were 20% more likely to be responders (relative risk [RR] 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.77-1.87), those with a CD4 T cell count between 200 and 300 cells/µL were 61% more likely to be responders (RR 1.61, 95% CI 1.05-2.45), and those with a CD4 T cell count greater than 300 cells/µL were 89% more likely to be responders (RR 1.89, 95% CI 1.26-2.83). CONCLUSIONS: We found that the CD4 T cell count at the time of vaccination to be the sole predictor of response to HBV vaccination among HIV-infected Vietnamese adults. Our findings highlight the importance of vaccinating HIV-infected adults prior to advanced immunosuppression.

RESUMO

In this study, a procedure to estimate thickness of the inner dead-layer of an n-type coaxial HPGe detector is described. Experimental measurements are carried out with standard point sources: (54)Mn, (57)Co, (60)Co, (88)Y, (109)Cd, (134)Cs, (137)Cs, and (152)Eu at distances of 5 and 10cm from source to detector. Shape and dimensions of a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector are determined by radiography to characterize the geometry accurately for Monte Carlo simulation. The role of thickness of the inner dead-layer on full energy peak efficiency is illustrated by MCNP5 code, and it is observed that slope coefficient of efficiency curve has a linear relationship with thickness of the dead-layer. The adjustment of dead-layer yields good agreement, with relative deviation of ≤3%, between experimental efficiency and simulated efficiency in the energy range of 88-1836keV.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Quantitative computed tomography (CT) has been used to phenotype patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A mixed phenotype is defined as the presence of both airway wall thickening and emphysema on quantitative CT. Little is known about patients with COPD with the mixed phenotype. OBJECTIVES: To propose a method of phenotyping COPD based on quantitative CT and to compare clinically relevant outcomes between patients with COPD with the mixed phenotype and those with other CT-based phenotypes. METHODS: Each of 427 male smokers (187 without COPD, 240 with COPD) underwent a complete medical interview, pulmonary function testing, and whole-lung CT on the same day. The percentage of low-attenuation volume at the threshold of -950 Hounsfield units (%LAV) and the square root of wall area of a hypothetical airway with an internal perimeter of 10 mm (Pi10) were measured. Patients with COPD were classified into four distinct phenotypes based on the upper limits of normal for %LAV and Pi10, which were derived from the data of smokers without COPD by using quantile regression. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Of 240 patients with COPD, 52 (21.7%) were classified as CT-normal phenotype, 39 (16.3%) as airway-dominant phenotype, 103 (42.9%) as emphysema-dominant phenotype, and 46 (19.2%) as mixed phenotype. Patients with COPD with the mixed phenotype were associated with more severe dyspnea than those with each of the remaining CT-based phenotypes (P < 0.01 for all comparisons). The number of hospitalizations for COPD exacerbations during the preceding year was 2.0 to 3.6 times higher in patients with the mixed phenotype than in those with each of the remaining CT-based phenotypes (P < 0.05 for all comparisons). Findings persisted after adjustment for age, pack-years of smoking, smoking status, body mass index, and FEV1. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with COPD with the mixed phenotype are associated with more severe dyspnea and more frequent hospitalizations than those with each of the remaining CT-based phenotypes. Thus, patients with COPD with the mixed phenotype may need more attention and interventions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The relative contributions of emphysema and airway remodelling to airflow limitation remain unclear in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We aimed to evaluate the relative contributions of emphysema and airway wall thickness measured by quantitative computed tomography (CT) to the prediction of airflow limitation in two separate COPD cohorts. METHODS: Pulmonary function tests and whole-lung CT were performed in 250 male smokers with COPD, including 167 from University Medical Center at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and 83 from Shiga University of Medical Science Hospital, Japan. The same CT analysis software was used to measure the percentage of low attenuation volume (%LAV) at the threshold of -950 Hounsfield units and the square root of wall area of a hypothetical airway with an internal perimeter of 10 mm (Pi10). The standardized coefficients in multiple linear regressions were used to evaluate the relative contributions of %LAV and Pi10 to predictions of FEV1 /FVC and FEV1 % predicted. RESULTS: Both %LAV and Pi10 independently predicted either forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity (FEV1 /FVC) or FEV1 % predicted (P ≤ 0.001 for all standardized coefficients). However, the absolute values of the standardized coefficients were 2-3 times higher for %LAV than for Pi10 in all prediction models. The results were consistent in the two COPD cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: %LAV predicts both FEV1 /FVC and FEV1 better than Pi10 in patients with COPD. Thus, emphysema may make a greater contribution to airflow limitation than airway remodelling in COPD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is time-consuming to obtain the square root of airway wall area of the hypothetical airway with an internal perimeter of 10 mm (√Aaw at Pi10), a comparable index of airway dimensions in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), from all airways of the whole lungs using 3-dimensional computed tomography (CT) analysis. We hypothesized that √Aaw at Pi10 differs among the five lung lobes and √Aaw at Pi10 derived from one certain lung lobe has a high level of agreement with that derived from the whole lungs in smokers. METHODS: Pulmonary function tests and chest volumetric CTs were performed in 157 male smokers (102 COPD, 55 non-COPD). All visible bronchial segments from the 3rd to 5th generations were segmented and measured using commercially available 3-dimensional CT analysis software. √Aaw at Pi10 of each lung lobe was estimated from all measurable bronchial segments of that lobe. RESULTS: Using a mixed-effects model, √Aaw at Pi10 differed significantly among the five lung lobes (R(2) = 0.78, P<0.0001). The Bland-Altman plots show that √Aaw at Pi10 derived from the right or left upper lobe had a high level of agreement with that derived from the whole lungs, while √Aaw at Pi10 derived from the right or left lower lobe did not. CONCLUSION: In male smokers, CT-derived airway wall area differs among the five lung lobes, and airway wall area derived from the right or left upper lobe is representative of the whole lungs.

RESUMO

Degraded alginate compounds with molecular weights of 7-26, 40-77, or 11-26 kDa were obtained by γ irradiation, hydrogen peroxide (5% H(2)O(2)) treatment, or a combination treatment involving ionizing radiation and H(2)O(2), respectively. The 14 kDa oligoalginate, prepared by the combined method, promoted the growth of mustard greens and lettuce at an optimal concentration of 75 mg/L. The growth promotion effects of the oligoalginate prepared by γ irradiation in the presence of H(2)O(2) were statistically equivalent to those of the oligoalginate prepared by γ irradiation only. The combination of γ irradiation and H(2)O(2) reduced the required irradiation dosage by a factor of 9 relative to the oligoalginate produced by γ irradiation only. The combination treatment (γ irradiation/H(2)O(2)) may be carried out on a large scale at low cost to produce oligoalginate for use as a plant growth promoter in agricultural industries.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Laboratory capacity is needed in central Viet Nam to provide early warning to public health authorities of respiratory outbreaks of importance to human health, for example the outbreak of influenza A(H1N1) pandemic in 2009. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedures established as part of a capacity-building process were used to conduct prospective respiratory surveillance in a region where few previous studies have been undertaken. METHODS: Between October 2008 and September 2010, nose and throat swabs from adults and children (approximately 20 per week) presenting with an acute respiratory illness to the Ninh Hoa General Hospital were collected. Same-day PCR testing and result reporting for 13 respiratory viruses were carried out by locally trained scientists. RESULTS: Of 2144 surveillance samples tested, 1235 (57.6%) were positive for at least one virus. The most common were influenza A strains (17.9%), with pandemic influenza A(H1N1) 2009 and seasonal H3N2 strain accounting for 52% and 43% of these, respectively. Other virus detections included: rhinovirus (12.4%), enterovirus (8.9%), influenza B (8.3%), adenovirus (5.3%), parainfluenza (4.7%), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) (3.9%), human coronavirus (3.0%) and human metapneumovirus (0.3%). The detection rate was greatest in the 0-5 year age group. Viral co-infections were identified in 148 (6.9%) cases. DISCUSSION: The outbreak in 2009 of the influenza A(H1N1) pandemic strain provided a practical test of the laboratory's pandemic plan. This study shows that the availability of appropriate equipment and molecular-based testing can contribute to important individual and public health outcomes in geographical locations susceptible to emerging infections.

The detection rate was greatest in the 0–5 year age group. Viral co-infections were identified in 148 (6.9%) cases. Discussion: The outbreak in 2009 of the influenza A(H1N1) pandemic strain provided a practical test of the laboratory’s pandemic plan. This study shows that the availability of appropriate equipment and molecular-based testing can contribute to important individual and public health outcomes in geographical locations susceptible to emerging infections.

RESUMO

Small GTPases of the Rab family are key regulators of membrane trafficking. We produced antibodies against the Rab7 protein of Bombyx mori (BRab7) in rabbits, and against the Rab11 protein of B. mori (BRab11) in mice. The antibodies recognized BRab7 and BRab11 proteins, but did not recognize other Rab proteins. Immunoblotting of samples from brain tissue of B. mori revealed a single band for each antibody. Rab11 was expressed in most tissues, whereas Rab7 was expressed in the brain, ovary, and testis. Immunohistochemical reactivity of Rab7 and Rab11 in the brain of B. mori was restricted to neurons of the pars intercerebralis and dorsolateral protocerebrum. Double-labeling experiments demonstrated that immunohistochemical reactivity of Rab7 co-localized with that of Rab11 and partially with that of Rab8. Immunohistochemical reactivity of Rab11 and Rab8 co-localized with that of PERIOD, one of the proteins associated with circadian rhythm. These findings suggest that Rab7, Rab8, and Rab11 are involved in protein transport in the neurons of the brain of B. mori and might play a role in the control of circadian rhythm.
