RESUMO

Noble element time projection chambers are a leading technology for rare event detection in physics, such as for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Time projection chambers typically assign event position in the drift direction using the relative timing of prompt scintillation and delayed charge collection signals, allowing for reconstruction of an absolute position in the drift direction. In this paper, alternate methods for assigning event drift distance via quantification of electron diffusion in a pure high pressure xenon gas time projection chamber are explored. Data from the NEXT-White detector demonstrate the ability to achieve good position assignment accuracy for both high- and low-energy events. Using point-like energy deposits from 83mKr calibration electron captures (E∼45 keV), the position of origin of low-energy events is determined to 2 cm precision with bias <1mm. A convolutional neural network approach is then used to quantify diffusion for longer tracks (E≥1.5 MeV), from radiogenic electrons, yielding a precision of 3 cm on the event barycenter. The precision achieved with these methods indicates the feasibility energy calibrations of better than 1% FWHM at Qßß in pure xenon, as well as the potential for event fiducialization in large future detectors using an alternate method that does not rely on primary scintillation.

Catalysts with V2O5, WO3 and V2O5-WO3 dispersed over TiO2 were synthesized using sol-gel technique and thoroughly characterized by various techniques. The catalysts were evaluated for degradation of ortho-dichloro benzene (o-DCB) in air/helium, a representative probe molecule for polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxin and polychlorinated dibenzofuran by employing in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR spectroscopy). Different intermediate species formed on the surface of the TiO2 supported catalysts through of interaction of sorbate molecules with the lattice and/or gaseous oxygen were investigated in detail. Analysis of vibrational bands, observed during sorption of o-DCB and o-DCB-air mixture as a function of temperature over these catalysts, delineated the role of surface intermediate species such as phenolate, enolates, maleates, carboxylates, carbonates in mineralization of o-DCB. Nature and stability of intermediate species, found to be different over these catalysts, were able to elucidate the catalytic activity trend.

Various literature studies (Table 6) have reported that dispersion of metal nanoparticles (NPs) on graphitic carbon nitride g-C3N4 (M/CN) has considerably improved the photocatalytic hydrogen yield. It is understood that metal NPs create active sites on the surface of CN and act as a cocatalyst. However, the precise changes induced by different metal NPs on the surface of CN still elude us. Here, we report a thorough understanding and comparison of the morphology, metal-support interactions, interfacial charge transfer kinetics, and band characteristics in different M/CN (M = Pt, Pd, Au, Ag, Cu) correlated with photocatalytic activity. Among all metals, Pt/CN was found to be the best performer both under sunlight and UV-visible irradiation. Under sunlight, maximum H2@ 2.7 mmol/h/g was observed over Pt/CN followed by Pd/CN > Au/CN > Ag/CN > Cu/CN ≈ CN. The present study revealed that among all metals, Pt formed superior interfacial contact with g-C3N4 as compared to other metals. The maximum Schottky barrier height (Φb,Pt) of 0.66 V was observed at Pt/CN followed by Φb,Au/CN (0.46 V) and Φb,Pd/CN (0.05 V). The presence of electron-deficient Pt in Pt-XPS, decrease in the intensity of d-DOS of Pt near the Fermi level in VB-XPS, increase in CB tail states, and cathodic shift in Vfb in MS plots sufficiently confirmed strong metal-support interactions in Pt/CN. Due to the SPR effect, Au and Ag NPs suffered from agglomeration and poor dispersion during photodeposition. Finely dispersed Pt NPs (2-4 nm, 53% dispersion) successfully competed with shallow/deep trap states and drove the photogenerated electrons to active metallic sites in a drastically reduced time period as investigated by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Typically, an interfacial electron transfer rate, KIET,avg, of 2.5 × 1010 s-1 was observed for Pt/CN, while 0.087 × 1010 s-1 was observed in Au/CN. Band alignment/potentials at M/CN Schottky junctions were derived and most favorable in Pt/CN with CB tail states much above the water reduction potential; however, in the case of Pd, these extend much below the H+/H2 potential and hence behave like deep trap states. Thus, in Pd/CN (τ0 = 4200 ps, 49%) and Ag/CN (3870 ps, 53%), electron deep trapping dominates over charge transfer to active sites. The present study will help in designing futuristic new cocatalyst-photocatalyst systems.

Emerging hypotheses in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) suggest important role of neurotrophic factors and oxidative stress. This study assessed the effect of milnacipran (a dual serotonin­noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor) on brain­derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and oxidative stress biomarkers i.e., malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione­s­ transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GR) in patients of MDD. Thirty patients (aged 18 to 60 years) with MDD diagnosed by DSM­IV criteria, with Hamilton Depression Rating scale (HAM­D) score ≥ 14 were included in the study. Patients were given milnacipran in the doses of 50­100 mg once daily. Patients were followed up for 12 weeks. HAM­D score at the start of treatment was 17.8±1.7 which significantly reduced to 8.9±3.1 at 12 weeks of treatment. In responders, the plasma BDNF levels increased significantly at 12 weeks post treatment. There was no significant change in the pre­ and post­treatment values of oxidative stress parameters (MDA, GST and GR) after 12 week treatment. Milnacipran is effective and well tolerated in MDD patients, and its therapeutic response is associated with an increase in plasma BDNF levels. However, milnacipran did not affect oxidative stress biomarkers.

Background The meniscus plays an important role in maintaining healthy articular cartilage. Meniscus tear, one of the common intra-articular knee lesions, is treated by either debridement or repair. Objective This study aims at identifying the early outcome of meniscus tears treated by debridement or repair. This study also elaborates on the spectrum of meniscal injuries presented in a tertiary care hospital in Nepal. Method A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Orthopedic Department of Dhulikhel Hospital from February 2018 until January 2020 among patients who underwent knee arthroscopies for meniscal tears treated either by debridement or repair. Patients having intra articular fractures, osteochondral injuries and multi-ligament injuries were excluded. The meniscal tears were classified according to location and type of tear. Those patients who had at least one-year of follow up were evaluated with Lysholm score for functional outcome. Data were compiled and analyzed with Microsoft Excel 2011. Result One hundred and ten cases of meniscal tears were managed over the study period. Ninty-three cases could be traced for outcome evaluation, which included 50 cases of meniscal debridement and 43 cases of meniscal repair. The mean Lysholm score of the patients who received debridement was 81.5 (SD 10.4) and those who received meniscal repair was 84.9 (SD 9.1) (p=0.105). The population distribution was found to be similar in both the groups according to age and sex distribution and associated ligamentous injuries. Conclusion Good functional outcome was seen for meniscal tears managed with debridement or repair in at least one year follow up and could not establish one modality of management better than the other.

In the past few decades, many medical professionals and dentists have paid close notice to their own fields, specializing in medicine pertaining to body and oral cavity respectively. Currently, this void is rapidly closing between all medical specialties, in presence of significant findings that supports association between periodontal disease and systemic conditions. Till now, some practitioners are not aware about the specialties of dentistry that results in improper referral practices. There are few studies on referral practice pertaining to periodontist, not with standing the fact that clear and effective communication between all health practitioners is essential for good practice. A cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the knowledge and awareness about systemic effects of periodontal disease among medical, dental and alternate medical practitioners and their referral practice to periodontist in Kanpur city. This cross-sectional study was carried out using self-reported questionnaire, distributed to 560 practitioners of various medical fields from January 2020 to August 2021. A total of 206(36.8%) Medical, 194(34.6%) Dentists and 160(28.6%) alternative practitioners participated in study. More than half participants agreed about relationship between periodontal diseases and Diabetes Mellitus, Cardio-VascularDisease and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes. Among all 31.3% showed good knowledge level while 2.7% showed perfect level of practitioner's referral practice to periodontist. Dentists had statistically higher level of awareness compared to physicians. Referral practice to periodontist was deficit by medical and alternate medical practitioners despite of fact; they have good knowledge of relationship between periodontal disease and systemic health. Hence, interdisciplinary dental and medical training of practitioners is recommended.

The iron impregnated fungal bio-filter (IIFB) discs of luffa sponge containing Phanerochaete chrysosporium mycelia have been used for the removal of As(III) from water. Two different forms of same biomass viz. free fungal biomass (FFB) and modified free fungal biomass (chemically modified and iron impregnated; CFB and IIFB) have been simultaneously investigated to compare the performance of immobilization, chemo-tailoring and iron impregnation for remediation of As(III). IIFB showed highest uptake capacity and percentage removal of As(III), 1.32 mg/g and 92.4% respectively among FFB, CFB and IIFB. Further, the application of RSM and ANN-GA based mathematical model showed a substantial increase in removal i.e. 99.2% of As(III) was filtered out from water at optimised conditions i.e. biomass dose 0.72 g/L, pH 7.31, temperature 42 °C, and initial As(III) concentration 1.1 mg/L. Isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic studies proved that the process followed monolayer sorption pattern in spontaneous and endothermic way through pseudo-second order kinetic pathway. Continuous mode of As(III) removal in IIFB packed bed bioreactor, revealed increased removal of As(III) from 76.40 to 88.23% with increased column height from 5 to 25 cm whereas the removal decreased from 88.23 to 69.45% while increasing flow rate from 1.66 to 8.30 mL/min. Moreover, the IIFB discs was regenerated by using 10% NaOH as eluting agent and evaluated for As(III) removal for four sorption-desorption cycles, showing slight decrease of their efficiency by 1-2%. SEM-EDX, pHzpc, and FTIR analysis, revealed the involvement of hydroxyl and amino surface groups following a non-electrostatic legend exchange sorption mechanism during removal of As(III).

Comprehensive studies were carried out during the period 2016-19 on the estimation of site-specific wet and dry deposition velocities and the mass interception factor for Narora site based on the concentrations of 7Be in air, air deposits, rain water and vegetation samples. Mean wet and dry deposition velocities for Narora site were found to be 1.64E-2 and 1.58E-3 m s-1, respectively. Mass interception factors for vegetation found to be 0.34-2.51 m2 kg-1 dry weight with a mean of 0.97 m2 kg-1 dry weight. The obtained parameters shall be used for estimation of impact due to radionuclide related to Narora Atomic Power station.

BACKGROUND: To report the frequency and severity of complications, and their effect on the outcome of tuberculous meningitis (TBM).METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, the following TBM complications were observed: status epilepticus (SE), hydrocephalus, paradoxical clinical worsening (PCW), hyponatremia, drug-induced hepatitis (DIH), infarction and mechanical ventilation (MV). These were recorded and correlated with stage of meningitis and outcome.RESULTS: A total of 144 patients with TBM (median age 26 years, range 12-75) were included. There were 76 (52.8%) females. The patients were in Stage I (n = 33), Stage II (n = 82) and Stage III (n = 29); 58 had definite TBM. Complications occurred in 128 (88.9%); complications included hydrocephalus (n = 58, 40.3%), hyponatremia (n = 70, 48.6%), infarction (n = 48, 33.3%), DIH (n = 42, 29.2%), SE (n = 16, 18.0%), MV (n = 43, 29.9%) and PCW (n = 24, 16.7%), with variable overlap. By 6 months, 33 patients had died. Death was related to PCW (P = 0.016), hyponatremia (P = 0.03), MV (P = 0.02), infarction (P = 0.03) and the number of complications. Except PCW, most complications occurred during the first month.CONCLUSIONS: In TBM, complications occurred in 128 (88.9%) patients, mainly in the early stages, with variable overlap. Infarction, PCW, hyponatremia and MV were predictive of poor outcome.

AIM: Emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing with quinolone-resistant (QR) pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae augmented the need to establish therapeutic options against them. Present study aimed towards determination of synergistic combination of eugenol (EG) with cefotaxime (CTX) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) to combat against this resistance and potentiation of antibacterial drugs by EG against these bacteria. METHODS AND RESULTS: Synergistic interaction between EG and CTX/CIP (FICI: 0·08-0·5) were observed among ESBL-QR bacteria using checkerboard assay. Approximately, 2- to 1024-fold minimum inhibitory concentration value reduction and 17- to 165 030-fold dose reduction index strongly suggested synergistic interaction between EG and antibiotics. Cell viability assay showed reduction in log10 CFU per ml from 16·6 to 3·1 at synergistic concentration. Scanning electron microscopy further proved disruptive effect of EG on cell architecture. Eugenol and/or its combination also altered genes' expressions that imparted antibiotic resistance by ~1·6 to ~1226 folds. CONCLUSIONS: Reduced doses of antibiotics, bacterial morphological alterations, efflux pump down regulation, porin over expression and beta-lactamase gene inhibition of ESBL-QR bacteria by EG alone or in combination with CTX/CIP might have reversed antibiotic resistance profile of ESBL-QR bacteria. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study provided a molecular insight into action of EG and/with CTX and CIP, which might have potentiated antibiotic's activity against ESBL-QR bacteria.

The efficient (site-specific) management of soil nutrients is possible by understanding the spatial variability in distribution of phyto-available nutrients (here after called available nutrients) and identifying the soil management zones (MZs) of agricultural landscapes. There is need for delineating soil MZs of agricultural landscapes of the world for efficient management of soil nutrients in order to obtain sustainability in crop yield. The present study was, therefore, undertaken to understand the spatial distribution pattern of available micronutrients (zinc (Zn), boron (B), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu)), available sulphur (S), and soil properties (soil acidity (pH), electrical conductivity (EC) and organic carbon (SOC) content) in soils of intensively cultivated Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) of India and to delineate soil MZs for efficient management of soil nutrients. Totally, 55101 soil samples from 0-15 cm depth were obtained from 167 districts of IGP during 2014 to 2017 and were analysed for different soil parameters. Soil pH, EC and SOC content varied from 4.44 to 9.80, 0.02 to 2.13 dS m-1 and 0.10 to 1.99%, respectively. The concentration of available Zn, B, Fe, Mn, Cu and S varied from 0.01 to 3.27, 0.01 to 3.51, 0.19 to 55.7, 0.05 to 49.0, 0.01 to 5.29 and 1.01 to 108 mg kg-1, respectively. Geostatistical analysis resulted in varied distribution pattern of studied soil parameters with moderate to strong spatial dependence. The extent (% area) of nutrient deficiencies in IGP followed the order: S > Zn > B > Mn > Cu > Fe. Principal component analysis and fuzzy c-means clustering produced six distinctly different soil MZs of IGP for implementation of zone-specific soil nutrient management strategies for attaining sustainability in crop yield. The developed MZ maps could also be utilized for prioritization and rationalization of nutrients supply in IGP of India.

In view of environmental pollution by fossil fuel-based plastics, it has become imperative to find out an alternative biodegradable plastic for sustainability. In this context, polyhydroxy butyrate (PHB) production was carried out by the Zobellella sp. DD5 using inexpensive banana peels as the carbon source. Under optimized condition, 1.13 g/L (47.3%) of PHB was produced by the bacteria in growth associated mechanism. The CO group of PHB was detected from the high intense absorption band (1719 cm-1) of FTIR spectroscopic analysis. NMR and GC-MS results are also identical with the chemical shift signal CH, CH2 and CH3 group of PHB. The PHB is crystalline in nature and degree of crystallinity (Xc) - 34.38%, melting temperature (Tm) - 169 °C, thermal decomposition temperature (Td) - 248 °C as detected by XRD and DTA respectively. Rough surface morphology of PHB film was validated by AFM and SEM imaging that improves biodegradability of the PHB. The Young's modulus, tensile strength and elongation at break depicted hard and brittle nature of PHB. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) confirmed cytocompatibility of PHB at 500 µg/mL in human embryonic kidney (HEK-293) cell line. The non-cytotoxic PHB can be used for various biomedical and agricultural applications in future.

PURPOSE: To evaluate nickel-titanium rotary systems, ProTaper Universal (PTU), ProTaper Next (PTN), self-adjusting file (SAF), and stainless steel hand K files in deciduous root canals in longitudinal and horizontal sections by three-dimensional reconstruction. Whether there was any difference in shaping ability, transportation, dentine removal, untouched canal surface area, and preparation time among the different groups when used in primary root canals. METHODS: Shaping and cleaning of canals in primary molars were done using the four systems, and CBCT and specialized software were used for scanning, image processing, three-dimensional reconstruction, and analysis of pre-operative and post-operative to evaluate the groups for their shaping properties, transportation, amount of dentine removal, untouched canal surface area, and preparation time in primary root canals. RESULTS: None of the groups reported stripping of canals or instrument failure. SAF demonstrated less removal of dentine as compared to other groups. Hand K files presented with high untouched canal surface area, while it was least with SAF. In addition, rotary files provided faster preparation than hand files, and among the rotary systems, PTN took least time for cleaning and shaping of canals. All the groups were similar in transportation at cervical and apical third. CONCLUSION: Under the conditions of this study, SAF seemed to result in more conservative and meticulous removal of dentine. This is desirable to preserve the integrity of thin-walled primary root canals. SAF also showed less untouched canal areas suggesting better contact with the primary canal walls. The rotary file groups required less clinical time which is important in paediatric treatments.

Olfactory dysfunction is frequent in rhinological disease. It has been attributed to nasal obstruction leading to impairment of transport of odorants to the olfactory epithelium or to inflammation in the olfactory cleft. We assessed olfaction in allergic rhinitis and correlated the olfactory score with other variables; in order to elucidate the pathogenesis of olfactory impairment in allergic rhinitis. Forty patients of allergic rhinitis (skin prick test positive) and forty healthy controls were included. The groups were evaluated for olfactory score, nasal airflow, peripheral eosinophilia, and levels of IgE and IL-5 in nasal secretions. The combined olfactory score in the patients was lower than that in controls. The score was better in patients with a better nasal airflow, but no significant association was found between the two. The peripheral eosinophilia and IgE and IL-5 level in nasal secretions was significantly higher in patients but demonstrated no significant correlation with the olfactory score. Allergic rhinitis patients had a decreased olfactory score; which weakly correlated to the nasal airflow. Local IgE and IL-5 were elevated in allergic rhinitis but did not show a significant correlation with olfactory scores. Our study concludes that both factors exist in allergic rhinitis but which factor is significantly responsible for hyposmia is not clear.

This work investigated the relationship of host size, seasons, and water quality parameters with the prevalence and intensity of Cornudiscoides agarwali on Mystus bleekeri collected from the Dikrong River in Arunachal Pradesh, India from February 2016 to January 2017. A total of 2760 specimens of C. agarwali were recovered from 114 individuals of M. bleekeri. The levels of mean intensity, but not the prevalence, of infection of C. agarwali were positively correlated with fish host size, peaking in the largest size class (45.20 ± 5.69 parasites/fi sh). The prevalence values had a statistically significant seasonal trend, reaching highest (100 %) during the pre-monsoon season, followed by 91.8% during the post-monsoon period and 87.5 % during the monsoon season. The levels of mean intensity of infection were also dependent on the seasons, reaching significantly higher levels during the pre-monsoon season (42.75 ± 4.18 parasites/fi sh). All water quality parameters measured were within the safety value recommended for freshwater aquaculture. Cornudiscoides agarwali maintained its prevalence above 87.5 % throughout the annual cycle, which means it was able to reproduce year-round in a non-polluted river. This could be an indication of monogenoidean community and population dynamics thriving best under optimum water quality parameters. Also, this article draws the attention of parasitologists and ichthyologists to a taxonomic problem of the misidentification of Mystus spp., and therefore, possibly of their parasitic monogenoids.

AIMS: Global spread of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPsA) and Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is an emerging clinical problem. Since, quercetin is a well-known antibacterial agent; it would be relevant to demonstrate synergy between quercetin and meropenem and elucidate molecular basis of effective bactericidal activity of quercetin-meropenem against CRPsA and CRAB. METHODS AND RESULTS: Hence, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), checkerboard, time-kill and Baclight assays were performed to determine the antibacterial and synergistic activity of quercetin with meropenem against CRPsA and CRAB. To corroborate synergism, fractional inhibitory concentration index, combination index calculation and isobologram analysis were performed on selected isolates. Finally, to elucidate molecular basis of effective bactericidal activity of quercetin-meropenem against CRPsA and CRAB, effect of meropenem, quercetin and their combinations on cellular morphology and levels of blaNDM , mexB and adeB expressions were evaluated on selected isolates by scanning electron microscope and qRT-PCR. Quercetin exhibited synergy with meropenem. It inhibited blaNDM and AdeB expression. Half-MIC combination of quercetin-meropenem exerted bactericidal activity by disrupting cell wall/membrane integrity and altering cellular morphology. CONCLUSION: Quercetin could potentiate meropenem activity against CRPsA and CRAB. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study had demonstrated bactericidal and synergistic activity of quercetin with meropenem against CRPsA and CRAB.

The Cu (3 to 15 at%) is incorporated into ZnO thin film by atomic beam co-sputtering has been investigated for enhancement in room temperature ferromagnetism and green photo-luminance. These Cu-ZnO thin films examined with Raman spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), UV-Visible spectroscopy, Hall measurement, magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and magnetic hysteresis. Raman spectroscopy, XRD confirms wurtzite structure and improvement in the crystallinity of ZnO upto 7% Cu. Further increase in Cu concentration results in growth in Cu nanoparticles. On increasing Cu concentration, there is decrement in transparency and increase in band gap with increase in n-type carrier concentration as confirmed from UV-Visible and Hall measurement studies. Magnetic measurement exhibited unique feature of room temperature ferromagnetic ordering in undoped and doped sample upto 3% Cu. The enhancement in magnetic moment as well as green emission in photoluminescence response with increase in Cu doping indicates that generation of large defects in ZnO by Cu doping, which can be attributed to combined effect of the presence of oxygen vacancies and/or structural inhomogeneity as well as formation of bound magnetic polarons. Importantly, synthesised Cu doped ZnO thin films can be used as spin LEDs and switchable spin-laser diodes.

Nonlinear structured illumination microscopy (nSIM) is an effective approach for super-resolution wide-field fluorescence microscopy with a theoretically unlimited resolution. In nSIM, carefully designed, highly-contrasted illumination patterns are combined with the saturation of an optical transition to enable sub-diffraction imaging. While the technique proved useful for two-dimensional imaging, extending it to three-dimensions is challenging due to the fading of organic fluorophores under intense cycling conditions. Here, we present a compressed sensing approach that allows 3D sub-diffraction nSIM of cultured cells by saturating fluorescence excitation. Exploiting the natural orthogonality of speckles at different axial planes, 3D probing of the sample is achieved by a single two-dimensional scan. Fluorescence contrast under saturated excitation is ensured by the inherent high density of intensity minima associated with optical vortices in polarized speckle patterns. Compressed speckle microscopy is thus a simple approach that enables 3D super-resolved nSIM imaging with potentially considerably reduced acquisition time and photobleaching.

This study investigated the effect of heptachlor-induced oxidative stress (OS) on transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß1-mediated epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) in human renal proximal tubular epithelial (HK-2) cells. Following treatment of HK-2 cells with an increasing concentration of heptachlor (0.01-10 µM) for 24 h, the intracellular reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde level increased, whereas the glutathione-s-hydroxylase (GSH) level declined significantly in a dose-dependent manner. Pretreatment with N-acetyl cysteine attenuates the heptachlor-induced OS. In this study, we have shown that heptachlor-induced OS regulates the mRNA expression of TGF-ß1-mediated Smad signalling genes accompanied by increased nuclear localization of phosphorylated Smad-2 and phosphorylated Smad-3. Furthermore, the m-RNA and protein level of epithelial marker, that is, E-cadherin decreased while the mesenchymal marker, that is, α-smooth muscle actin increased in heptachlor exposed HK-2 cells. In conclusion, heptachlor-induced OS might be responsible for the activation of TGF-ß1/Smad signalling which ultimately leads to renal damage by means of EMT.
