RESUMO

We present a method of analysis of images of dynamic speckle based on the filtering in frequency bands of the temporary history of each pixel. Butterworth filters are applied to the temporary evolution, and different images are constructed showing the energy in each frequency band. Different degrees of activity of the sample in study, presumably attributed to different origins, are found. The method is exemplified with images of bruising damage in fruits and of biological activity in germinating corn seeds. It is found that the activity in the bruised region of an apple differs from the activity of healthy regions in a certain characteristic frequency range. The activity of the embryo can also be distinguished from that of the endosperm in corn seeds during germination.

RESUMO

The work reported here describes the application of the optical technique known as dynamic speckle interferometry to evaluate the motility of nematode parasites exposed to different anthelmintic drugs. This technique, a well proven tool for assessing the time evolution of different phenomena, is here successfully used to quantify parasite motility in pharmacodynamic assays. The characterization of the pharmacological properties of anthelmintic drugs is critical to optimize their use in parasite control. Besides, the evaluation of nematode motility is a relevant indicator of the pharmacodynamic effect of anthelmintic drugs. The application of this approach to study the motility of Haemonchus contortus (used as a model of nematode parasites) larvae exposed to different drugs is presented, showing its usefulness.

RESUMO

The use of different multiple-aperture pupils for recording each image in speckle photography is proposed. The introduction of suitable spatial frequency carriers, by internally modulating imaged speckles, allows one to selectively isolate or combine the spectral content of different images into spatially separated regions in the Fourier plane. Theoretical and experimental results extend the speckle photography technique to the depiction of several specklegrams of multiple uniform in-plane displacements. In this case, because different pupils are considered for recording, the cross-correlation functions for the amplitudes and intensities in the image plane are calculated on the basis of the statistical properties of the object. Also, the ensemble-average intensity in the Fourier plane is analytically derived, and fringe visibility is investigated.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Because of recent changes in the treatment of unstable angina, we wanted to reassess the short-term prognostic value of clinical and echocardiographic variables. METHODS: This was an observational, prospective study that included 1038 nonselected consecutive patients admitted to coronary care units for unstable angina. RESULTS: Baseline characteristics were age 60.18 +/- 16 years, history of prior myocardial infarction in 336 patients (32%), and a history of previous angina in 817 patients (78.7%). Angina during the 48 hours before admission was observed in 1004 patients (96.7%) and ST-segment changes on admission electrocardiogram occurred in 385 patients (37%). In-hospital treatment consisted of nitrates in 81.4% of patients, aspirin in 88.6%, beta-blockers in 71%, intravenous heparin in 34.5%, subcutaneous heparin in 23%, and angioplasty or coronary artery bypass grafting in 25.1%. After admission, angina occurred in 443 patients (40.8%), refractory angina in 223 patients (21.5%), and death or myocardial infarction in 84 patients (8.1%). At admission, the independent predictors of myocardial infarction or death identified by multivariate logistic regression analysis were ST-segment depression (odds ratio [OR] 2.13, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.23 to 3.68, P =.006), prior angina (OR 2.23, 95% CI 0.98 to 5.05, P =.05), number of episodes of angina within the previous 48 hours (OR 1.63, 95% CI 0.98 to 2.70, P =.05), and history of smoking (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.56 to 0.85, P =.004). Age greater than 65 years (OR 1.49, 95% CI1.09 to 2.03, P = 0.03) was significantly related to in-hospital death. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for application of this model was 0.59. Sensitivity was 80% with a specificity of only 33%. Refractory angina after admission showed a strong relation with an adverse short-term outcome. CONCLUSIONS: With current therapy, clinical and electrocardiographic variables provide useful information about the short-term outcome of unstable angina. However, this model has low specificity to identify high-risk patients. Future studies about the incremental value of the new serum markers such as troponin T and C-reactive protein to assist in identification of high-risk patients are necessary.

RESUMO

Fritz's method [Opt. Eng. 23, 379 (1984)] of using Zernike polynomials to assess the absolute planarity of test plates is revisited. A refinement is described that takes into account the data decorrelation that appears in experiments. An uncertainty balance is defined by propagation of error contributions through the steps of the method. The resultant measuring procedure is demonstrated on a data set from experiments, and a nanometer level of uncertainty is achieved.

RESUMO

We comment on the propagation of the sign ambiguity produced in the Burch experiment when out-of-plane movements are measured by use of several points of view. The existence of this problem in photogrammetry is also considered.

RESUMO

Digital speckle pattern interferometry provides information on deformations equivalent to that given by image holography. Thus more than one viewpoint is necessary for the description of three-dimensional deformation vectors. We report the use of a diffraction-grating technique to process simultaneously the three or more required viewpoints of a digital holography experiment.

RESUMO

A method to measure three-dimensional displacements through a speckle technique is proposed. This measurement is possible by adding a diffraction grating to the classical bidimensional Burch experimental setup. The principle is described and results are discussed.

RESUMO

A new technique is proposed to perform several image-processing operations with the same optical system. Each operation can easily be selected by properly loading a birefringent photoelastic plate, which acts as the spatial filter of the-system. Thus different pupil transmittance configurations can be achieved, each of which is associated with a certain image transformation.
