Conformationally blocked quinoxaline cavitand as solid-phase microextraction coating for the selective detection of BTEX in air.

A tetraquinoxaline cavitand functionalized with methylenoxy bridges at the upper rim is proposed as selective solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating for the determination of BTEX at trace levels in air. The SPME fibers were characterized in terms of film thickness, morphology, thermal stability and extraction capabilities. An average coating thickness of 35 (±4) µm, a thermal stability up to 350 °C and a good fiber-to-fiber and batch-to-batch repeatability with RSD lower than 15% were obtained. Excellent enrichment factors ranging from 360-700 × 10(3) were obtained for the investigated compounds. Finally, method validation proved the capabilities of the developed coating for the selective sampling of BTEX, achieving LOD values in the 0.4-1.2 ng m(-3) range.

[Stickler's syndrome]. / Zespól Sticklera.

Stickler's syndrome or congenital, progressive arthro-ophthalmopathy refers to disturbances of the connective tissue of the organism but mainly the osteoarticular and visual systems. In the visual system one discovers a congenital high myopia, pathological changes in the vitreous in the form of membranes and proliferative bands as well as retinal detachment. A metabolic defect concerning the hyaluronic acid and the collagen of the 2-d type is assumed to be the cause of this syndrome.

[Serological markers of selected viral infections transmitted by parenteral route in drug addicts]. / Serologiczne markery wybranych zakazen wirusowych przenoszacych sie droga parenteralna u narkomanów.

Investigations included a group 80 asymptomatic drug addicts. They were examined immunoenzyme method aiming at detection infection by HIV, HBV, HCV and HDV. Cases of seropositive HIV results were confirmed by means WB. In 68 examined patients serological evidence of virus HBV was discovered. In 60 of them one also found out coexisting HIV serological markers, in 51 of HCV markers. HDV antibodies were disclosed in 7 cases. Infection with hepatotropic viruses were more frequent in group of HIV(+) drug addicts.

[Hepatitis C (personal observations]. / Wirusowe zapalenie watroby typu C (obserwacje wlasne).

In 222 patients treated in the Department of Infectious Diseases Medical School of Bydgoszcz, one carried out immunoenzymatic examinations to find out presence of HCV antibodies. Among them, there were 33NANBH patients as well as 32 diagnosed as CAH NANB origin, 55 chronic hemodialysis patients and finally 102 IVDU. It was pointed out that the patients suffering from acute and chronic hepatitis type NANB were often HCV infected. Drug addicts (IVDU) and chronic hemodialysis patients constitute high risk groups of these infections. It should be stressed that these infections are asymptomatic in just these groups of patients. One discussed some epidemiological and clinical aspects of 19 hepatitis C cases.

[Errors in the diagnosis of chronic intrahepatic cholestasis]. / Bledy w rozpoznawaniu przewleklej cholestazy wewnatrzwatrobowej.

In nine out of ten patients referred in the years 1982-1987 to the Infectious Diseases Department of the Medical Academy in Bydgoszcz with the diagnosis of chronic (sometimes lasting several years) intrahepatic cholestasis an extrahepatic etiology of cholestasis was recognised. The main causes of the made errors were, it seems, an excessive confidence in the results of laboratory examinations carried out by modern diagnostic methods and a not very careful analysis of the disease. Exploratory laparotomy should be the examination of decisive importance in cholestasis of unclear etiology.

[Organization of health care for persons from the groups of high risk of HIV infection in Bydgoszcz]. / Organizacja opieki nad osobami z grup wysokiego ryzyka zakazenia HIV w Bydgoszczy.

The existing in Bydgoszcz infectivity infrastructure was made available to AIDS infection risk groups. The AIDS infected patients make use of ambulatory and in-patient health service together with other sick people. Among 72 detected infections only 2 cases remain without any connection with drug addiction. In this paper one presented advantages of the accepted organisational model as well as the effects of its functioning.

[Our results of laser trabeculoplasty in simple glaucoma]. / Wyniki wlasne trabekuloplastyki laserowej w jaskrze prostej.

In 24 patients with simple glaucoma in whom the IOP did not normalize under the conservative treatment the authors checked--between others--the Po, the outflow coefficient (C) and calculated Po/C. Laser trabeculoplasty was performed subsequently. The enumerated indexes were examined the day after surgery, then after the 1-st and 2-nd week, after a month and 2 months. In the majority of cases the coefficient C showed an improvement and normalization of the IOP distinctly seen till the 1-st month after operation. In subsequent observations 5 persons showed a renewed deterioration of the hydrodynamic conditions and the intervention was repeated leading to an improvement in 3 cases. In consideration of the lack of normalization of the IOP in 2 persons it was necessary to subject them to a surgical procedure.

[Disorders of color vision in employees of the Masovian Refining and Petrochemical Industries in Plock]. / Zaburzenia widzenia barwnego u pracowników MZRiP w Plocku.

Attention is drawn to the problem of the influence of the petrol derivates on the frequency of acquired dyschromatopsia. It has been observed--on the basis of performed examinations of the color vision by means of the Farnsworth-Munsell's 100-Hue test--that the general numerical index of the faults is increasing proportionally to the period of employment, i.s. the period of the contact of the workers with the derivates of petrol.

[Effects of petroleum derivatives and psychological stress on eye changes in prospective studies]. / Wplyw pochodnych ropy naftowej i stresu psychicznego na zmiany w narzadzie wzroku w badaniach prospektywnych.

Prospective study of workers exposed to simultaneous action of petroleum derivatives and psychic stress proved statistically remarkable differences between the first study and control study (after two years) as related to macular degeneration and opacification of the lens. So far, the results do not seem to point to these phenomena as related to the differences of age and training period between the two groups. For the ultimate assessment of the effect of simultaneous intoxication with petroleum derivatives and psychic stress, it is necessary to confront the results of the study with those obtained after examining the control group including persons of the same age.

[Evaluation of the organ of sight in workers at the Masovian Refinery-Petrochemistry Plant. II. Correlation of the results of ophthalmological tests with the results of specialized and laboratory tests]. / Ocena stanu narzadu wzroku pracowników MZRiP. II. Basing on the results of examinations of 752 workers of the Refinery-Petro-chemistry Plant, correlations have been searched for between changes in the macula region of retina and disturbances found due to other specialist tests (internal, laryngological, dermatological), as well as laboratory--and toxicological investigations. A statistically significant correlation was found between changes in the macula and dysgeusia at the water-sewage division as well as the level of triglycerides at the phenol-and-total cholesterol division. A strict correlation was found between an increase in arterial hypertension and the rate of macula changes.

The ophthalmological examinations of petrochemical plant workers that have been carried out so far did not enable working out a simple method of rapid ophthalmological evaluation of subclinical aromatic hydrocarbons poisonings. Neither the results of our own studies nor the experience of other authors explained fully the pathogenesis of the described spot lesions. Further observations are advisable to account for that issue.

[Effect of physical exertion on intraocular pressure in healthy persons with similar degrees of physical fitness]. / Wplyw dynamicznego wysilku fizycznego na cisnienie sródgalkowe u ludzi zdrowych o podobnym stopniu wytrenowania.

35 young, healthy men were divided at random into two groups. Each of them made physical effort of different intensity and different quantity of the work performed. It was found that intraocular pressure was decreased in both groups but its drop was bigger in the group whose work was more strenouos. From the difference of performance of intraocular pressure in both the controlled groups we can conclude the degree of reduction of intraocular pressure and length of its duration may depend on quantity of the work performed. The pulse and blood pressure seem not to affect the intraocular pressure.
