RESUMO

Bisphenol-A diglycidylether methacrylate (Bis-GMA), which is synthesized from bisphenol-A (BPA), a compound with exogenous endocrine disrupter action, is widely used as a dental material. During clinical filling with sealants and composite resins, the compounds are solidified by polymerization and then used. However, it has been noted that unpolymerized monomers may become dissolved in saliva. In this study using a competitive ELISA system, we investigated the changes in the BPA concentration in saliva after restoration with composite resins. Commercial composite resins from nine companies were tested. Mixed saliva was collected from 21 subjects. Based on the dynamics of salivary BPA detected by this ELISA system, we concluded that several tens to 100 ng/ml of BPA were contained in saliva after filling teeth with composite resin but that sufficient gargling can remove it from the oral cavity. Our data suggest that sufficient gargling after treatment is important for risk management.

RESUMO

Today, Japan as a society is aging. The average life expectancy of Japanese people is approximately 80 years. One result of this is that preservation of masticatory functions in elderly people has become increasingly important from the viewpoint of quality of life. In the future, the use of dentures in facilitating masticatory functions as a substitute for teeth that are lost during the aging process will assume greater significance. Accordingly, appropriate evaluation and judgment of complete dentures for edentate jaws is crucial. This study was designed to elucidate the effects of the craniofacial form in complete denture wearers on the mode of activity of gnathic functions. First, subjects wearing complete dentures in both the upper and lower jaws were instructed to carry out vertical clenching, and bite force direction was determined. These data were then related to the subject's craniofacial morphology. These results suggest that the bite force direction in complete denture wearers is not affected by gender differences, but is closely associated with lateral craniofacial morphology, and that appropriate setting of occlusal plane and the occluded vertical dimension is extremely important in the preparation of complete dentures.

RESUMO

Rupture of an aneurysm of the aortic sinus of Valsalva into the right ventricle is described. Surgery revealed a small aneurysm ruptured into the right ventricle near the tricuspid valve without aneurysmal involvement of the tricuspid valve. The cineangiogram revealed a shunt from the aortic sinus into the right atrium not during systole but during diastole, and increased oxygen saturation was found in the right atrium. The unusual hemodynamics in this case was most probably due to the closure of the small aneurysmal opening due to myocardial contraction during systole, so that the shunt flow through the aneurysmal tract occurred only during diastole and was directed toward the right atrium due to the location of the aneurysm. Thus, even without aneurysmal involvement of the tricuspid valve or tricuspid regurgitation, the oxygen saturation increased in the right atrium.
