Climate change is expected to intensify bark beetle population outbreaks in forests globally, affecting biodiversity and trajectories of change. Aspects of individual tree resistance remain poorly quantified, particularly with regard to the role of phenolic compounds, hindering robust predictions of forest response to future conditions. In 2003, we conducted a mechanical wounding experiment in a Norway spruce forest that coincided with an outbreak of the bark beetle, Ips typographus. We collected phloem samples from 97 trees and monitored tree survival for 5 months. Using high-performance liquid chromatography, we quantified induced changes in the concentrations of phenolics. Classification and regression tools were used to evaluate relationships between phenolic production and bark beetle resistance, in the context of other survival factors. The proximity of beetle source populations was a principal determinant of survival. Proxy measures of tree vigor, such as crown defoliation, mediated tree resistance. Controlling for these factors, synthesis of catechin was found to exponentially increase tree survival probability. However, even resistant trees were susceptible in late season due to high insect population growth. Our results show that incorporating trait-mediated effects improves predictions of survival. Using an integrated analytical approach, we demonstrate that phenolics play a direct role in tree defense to herbivory.

The question of health effects of extremely low frequency (50/60 Hz) magnetic fields (ELFMF) has been widely discussed, but the mechanisms of interaction of these fields with biological systems for intensities relevant to human and animal exposure are still under question. The melatonin (MLT) hypothesis suggests that exposure to ELFMF might decrease MLT production thereby promoting cancerogenesis. So far, most studies of MLT secretion under exposure to ELFMF reported negative or inconsistent results. Here, we measured salivary MLT in 1-2 months old cattle calves exposed to 50 Hz-MF in the hundreds of nT-range. We found an inhibitory effect of the ELFMF upon MLT secretion in winter (in accordance with the MLT hypothesis). In contrast, in summer, MLT concentration was increased by ELFMF exposure (contrary to the MLT hypothesis). The inhibitory effect in winter was much stronger than the positive effect in summer. We hypothesize that this season-dependent effect upon MLT synthesis might by mediated by an effect of ELFMF upon the serotonin metabolism and conclude that future tests of ELFMF effects should also measure serotonin levels and consider association with the seasonal effects (photoperiod or temperature) during the exposure.

The spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus (L.) is the most serious pest of mature spruce stands, mainly Norway spruce, Picea abies (L.) Karst. throughout Eurasia. A complex of weather-related events and other environmental stresses are reported to predispose spruce stands to bark beetle attack and subsequent tree mortality; however the possible role of industrial pollution as a predisposing factor to attack by this species is poorly understood. The abundance and dynamics of I. typographus populations was evaluated in 60-80 year old Norway spruce stands occurring on 10 x 50 ha sites in five countries within the Carpathian range that were selected in proximity to established ozone measurement sites. Data were recorded on several parameters including the volume of infested trees, captures of adult beetles in pheromone traps, number of attacks, and the presence and relative abundance of associated bark beetle species. In several cases, stands adjacent to sites with higher ozone values were associated with higher bark beetle populations. The volume of sanitary cuttings, a reflection of tree mortality, and the mean daily capture of beetles in pheromone traps were significantly higher at sites where the O(3) level was higher. However, the mean infestation density on trees was higher in plots associated with lower O(3) levels. Captures of beetles in pheromone traps and infestation densities were higher in the zone above 800 m. However, none of the relationships was conclusive, suggesting that spruce bark beetle dynamics are driven by a complex interaction of biotic and abiotic factors and not by a single parameter such as air pollution.
