Background Vaccines have the most important role in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. With the widespread use of vaccines, COVID-19 has remarkably declined. Adolescents were vaccinated after approvals for this age group, which was later than adults, and a nationwide vaccination program was implemented in August 2021 in Turkey for adolescents ≥12 years of age. Therefore, we aimed to determine the effects of the COVID-19 nationwide adolescent vaccination program on adolescent hospitalizations due to COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) by comparing two periods, including the vaccination period (VP) and the pre-VP (PVP). The second aim of this study is to compare the clinical features and disease severity of vaccine-breakthrough COVID-19 hospitalizations with unvaccinated individuals in the VP. Methods A retrospective multicenter study was conducted to determine and compare the number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 and MIS-C between the VP (September 1, 2021, to August 31, 2022) and PVP (September 1, 2020, to August 31, 2021). We also compared the characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes of breakthrough infections of adolescents aged 12-18, which required hospitalization with the same age group of unvaccinated hospitalized individuals during the VP. Results During the study period, 3967 children (0-18 years) were hospitalized in the PVP and 5143 (0-18 years) in the VP. Of them, 35.4% were adolescents (12-18 years) in the PVP, and this rate was 18.6% in the VP; relative risk was 0.6467 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.6058-0.6904; p < 0.001). Patients with breakthrough COVID-19 were older (201 vs. 175 months, p < 0.001) and less commonly hospitalized for COVID-19 (81.5% vs. 60.4%, p < 0.001, odds ratio [OR]: 0.347 [95% CI: 0.184-0.654]). The majority of these infections were asymptomatic and mild (32% vs.72.9%: p < 0.001, OR: 5.718 [95% CI: 2.920-11.200]), and PICU admission was less frequently required (p = 0.011, OR: 0.188 [95% CI: 0.045-0.793]). Most breakthrough COVID-19 infections occurred within three months after the last vaccine dose (54.2%). Conclusions This study demonstrated a significant decrease in adolescent hospitalizations due to COVID-19 and MIS-C after implementing COVID-19 vaccines in Turkey. Breakthrough cases were less severe and mostly occurred three months after the last dose. This study emphasizes the importance of COVID-19 vaccines and that parents' decisions may be changed, particularly those who hesitate to or refuse vaccination.

OBJECTIVES: Children are the most vulnerable population affected by the earthquake. We aimed to examine the characteristics, morbidity, mortality, and the factors affecting these pediatric earthquake victims to guide the follow-up of pediatric patients who were rescued under the rubble in possible future disasters. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study. The files of pediatric earthquake victims aged 0-18 years who were admitted to Adana City Training and Research Hospital between 6 February-30 April 2023 were analyzed. 318 patients were included in the study. RESULTS: Of all patients 48.7% (n = 155) were female and 51.3% (n = 163) were male. The mean age of the patients was 114.8 months. 65.4% (n = 208) of the patients were discharged from our hospital, eighteen patients (5.7%) died. Information on the hour when the patients were rescued under the rubble could be reached in 117 (36.8%) patients. The mean rescue time of these patients was 50.5 hours. 62 (53%) victims were rescued in the first 24 hours after the earthquake. There were 111 patients (34.9%) with fractures. There were 118 patients (37.1%) who underwent fasciotomy surgery. The total number of patients with amputation was 48 (15.1%). There were 36 patients (11.3%) with one limb amputated, 12 patients (%3.7) with more than one limb amputation. Internal organ injury was present in 30.5% (n = 97) of the patients. Of these patients, 85.6% (n = 83) had single organ trauma and 14.4% (n = 14) had multiple organ trauma. There were 58 patients (18.2%) with acute renal failure in follow-up. The mean rescue time for patients with amputation was 83.65 ± 62.9 hours, and for patients without amputation was 36.44 ± 50.6 hours. This difference was statistically significant (p = 0.001). No statistically significant difference was found when the ages of the patients were compared to fasciotomy, amputation, and fracture status. CONCLUSION: While evaluating earthquake-induced trauma, pediatric patients should be approached carefully.

J Strength Cond Res 38(2): 245-252, 2024-This study investigated the activation levels and activation ratios of shoulder and scapular muscles during low plank (LP) and high plank (HP) variations, with varying levels of body-mass support, including 4-point, 3-pod, and 2-point body-weight-bearing (BWB) statuses. The study was conducted with 21 healthy men (mean ± SD , 26 ± 6.5 years of age and 24.4 ± 2.4 kg·m -2 BMI). Ten different plank exercises were performed in a mixed order by changing elbow joint positions (LP and HP) and BWB statuses (2-point, 3-pod, and 4-point). Activation levels of the lower trapezius (LT), middle trapezius (MT), upper trapezius (UT), biceps brachii, triceps brachii, infraspinatus, and serratus anterior (SA) muscles were assessed with a surface electromyography device. Results of this study showed that elbow position changes resulted in higher LT ( p = 0.01) and TB ( p = 0.001) activation in HP exercises. In general, it was observed that an increase in BWB status was effective in increasing activation for the scapula and shoulder girdle muscles. The ratios of the UT muscle to the SA, LT, and MT muscles were less than 1 during side plank, bird dog, front reach, shoulder taps, and plank with shoulder external rotation exercises. High plank with toe touch exercise resulted in a marked increase in the UT activation. Therefore, it was concluded plank variations alter activation levels and activation ratios of shoulder and scapular muscles. Plank exercises may be used in shoulder rehabilitation and the progression in plank variations can be achieved by changing elbow position and BWB status based on individual requirements.

OBJECTIVE: There is no consensus about the optimal frequency of patient visits during the rehabilitation program after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR). This study aimed to investigate the short- and long-term effects of high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) visits of the patients in the first 12 weeks of rehabilitation after ARCR. METHODS: This was a quasi-randomized study with 2 parallel groups. Forty-seven patients with ARCR were included in 2 different patient visit frequency protocols (HF = 23, LF = 24) in 12 weeks of postoperative rehabilitation. Patients in the HF group visited the clinic twice a week, whereas patients in the LF group visited once every 2 weeks for the first 6 weeks and once a week for the following 6 weeks. Both groups performed the same exercise protocol. Outcome measurements were pain and range of motion measured at baseline; at the 3rd, 5th, 8th, 12th, and 24th weeks; and at 1-year follow-up. Shoulder function was assessed at the 12th and 24th weeks and at 1-year follow-up with an American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score. RESULTS: There was a significant group × time interaction in pain intensity during the activity between the groups. The activity pain intensity was higher in the LF group (4.2 points) at 8 weeks post surgery than in the HF group (2.7 points) (mean difference: 1.5 points, P < .05), whereas it was similar in both groups at other time periods. The interaction term was not significant between the groups for pain intensity during rest and night through the 1-year follow-up. No group × time interactions were observed in shoulder range of motion and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score over the postoperative period. CONCLUSION: Both rehabilitation programs at different visit frequencies after ARCR showed similar clinical results in the long term. A supervised, controlled rehabilitation program with LF visits in the first 12 weeks after surgery can be sufficient to achieve optimal clinical results and reduce rehabilitation-related costs after ARCR. IMPACT: This study highlights that LF treatment protocols under the supervision of the therapist can be adopted after the arthroscopic rotator cuff repair to achieve successful results while decreasing the treatment costs. Physical therapists should plan the treatment sessions efficiently for the compliance of the patients to the exercise treatment. LAY SUMMARY: If you are a patient with arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, a supervised, controlled rehabilitation program with low-frequency visits in the first 12 weeks after surgery could help you achieve the best outcome and help lower the costs of rehabilitation. A total of 3 visits in the first 6 weeks might be sufficient (once every 2 weeks). More frequent visits (1-2 visits a week) should happen 6 to 12 weeks after the surgery.

CONTEXT: The University of Wisconsin Running Injury and Recovery Index (UWRI) was developed to evaluate the key elements that runners use to self-assess their own running ability following common running-related injuries. The aim of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the UWRI and to evaluate the psychometric properties of its Turkish version (UWRI-Tr) in runners. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: The study included 129 runners. The UWRI-Tr, the Lower Extremity Functional Scale, the Oswestry Disability Index, the Hip Outcome Score, the International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Evaluation Form, and the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure were applied for the validation purposes. Internal consistency, reliability, construct validity, and discriminant validity of the UWRI-Tr were tested. RESULTS: The test-retest reliability of the UWRI-Tr was excellent with an intraclass correlation coefficient of .85 and a Cronbach α value of .84. There was a small to strong correlation among the UWRI-Tr and Lower Extremity Functional Scale (r = .278), Oswestry Disability Index (r = -.744), Hip Outcome Score (r = .684), The International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Evaluation Form (r = .758), and Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (r = .498 and .767), indicating that its construct validity was appropriate for use with Turkish runners. CONCLUSIONS: The UWRI-Tr was shown to be a valid and reliable tool to use in clinical and research settings as a sport-specific measurement tool.

This multi-center point prevalence study evaluated children who were diagnosed as having coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). On February 2nd, 2022, inpatients and outpatients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) were included in the study from 12 cities and 24 centers in Turkey. Of 8605 patients on February 2nd, 2022, in participating centers, 706 (8.2%) had COVID-19. The median age of the 706 patients was 92.50 months, 53.4% were female, and 76.7% were inpatients. The three most common symptoms of the patients with COVID-19 were fever (56.6%), cough (41.3%), and fatigue (27.5%). The three most common underlying chronic diseases (UCDs) were asthma (3.4%), neurologic disorders (3.3%), and obesity (2.6%). The SARS-CoV-2-related pneumoniae rate was 10.7%. The COVID-19 vaccination rate was 12.5% in all patients. Among patients aged over 12 years with access to the vaccine given by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health, the vaccination rate was 38.7%. Patients with UCDs presented with dyspnea and pneumoniae more frequently than those without UCDs (p < 0.001 for both). The rates of fever, diarrhea, and pneumoniae were higher in patients without COVID-19 vaccinations (p = 0.001, p = 0.012, and p = 0.027).  Conclusion: To lessen the effects of the disease, all eligible children should receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The illness may specifically endanger children with UCDs. What is Known: • Children with COVID-19 mainly present with fever and cough, as in adults. • COVID-19 may specifically threaten children with underlying chronic diseases. What is New: • Children with obesity have a higher vaccination rate against COVID-19 than children without obesity. • Among unvaccinated children, fever and pneumoniae might be seen at a higher ratio than among vaccinated children.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder bracing is very common in musculoskeletal rehabilitation. OBJECTIVE: In this study, the positioning efficacy of shoulder support braces was investigated by analyzing their three-dimensional kinematic properties, as well as their perceived comfort was investigated with user ratings. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized repeated-measures study. METHODS: Seventeen asymptomatic participants were included. Scapular, humeral, and thoracic kinematics for all participants were measured using an electromagnetic tracking device in 6 experiments in randomized order: no brace, neutral brace, abduction brace, internal rotation brace, 15-degree external rotation brace (ER15-B), and 30-degree external rotation brace (ER30-B). Also, comfort ratings were obtained during each session. RESULTS: Internal rotation brace achieved a mean of 29.34° of humerothoracic internal rotation while providing increased scapular internal rotation and upward rotation ( p < 0.05). Abduction brace achieved a mean of 45.39° of humerothoracic and 39.58° of glenohumeral elevation coupled with increased scapular upward rotation, posterior tilt, and humeral internal rotation ( p < 0.05). 30-Degree external rotation brace achieved a mean of 33.25° of glenohumeral external rotation and resulted in increased scapular external rotation, upward rotation, posterior tilt, and humeral external rotation ( p < 0.05). Abduction brace, internal rotation brace, ER15-B, and ER30-B moved the thoracic spine into a more axial rotation in the contralateral direction. Internal rotation brace, ER15-B, and ER30-B were rated more uncomfortable when compared with the no brace condition, with no significant differences observed among the braces. CONCLUSIONS: The positioning efficacy was enhanced when an abduction pillow and external rotation wedge were applied. Selection of commercially available shoulder support braces should involve consideration of whether it can achieve the desired position and orientation as well as its comfort profile.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to reach consensus on the most appropriate terminology and issues related to clinical reasoning, examination, and treatment of the kinetic chain (KC) in people with shoulder pain among an international panel of experts. METHODS: A 3-round Delphi study that involved an international panel of experts with extensive clinical, teaching, and research experience in the study topic was conducted. A search equation of terms related to the KC in Web of Science and a manual search were used to find the experts. Participants were asked to rate items across 5 different domains (terminology, clinical reasoning, subjective examination, physical examination, and treatment) using a 5-point Likert-type scale. An Aiken coefficient of validity (V) ≥0.7 was considered indicative of group consensus. RESULTS: The participation rate was 30.2% (n = 16), whereas the retention rate was high throughout the 3 rounds (100%, 93.8%, and 100%). A total of 15 experts from different fields and countries completed the study. After the 3 rounds, consensus was reached on 102 items: 3 items were included in the "terminology" domain; 17 items, in the "rationale and clinical reasoning" domain; 11 items, in the "subjective examination" domain; 44 items, in the "physical examination" domain; and 27 items, in the "treatment" domain. Terminology was the domain with the highest level of agreement, with 2 items achieving an Aiken V of 0.93, whereas the domains of physical examination and treatment of the KC were the 2 areas with less consensus. Together with the terminology items, 1 item from the treatment domain and 2 items from the rationale and clinical reasoning domain reached the highest level of agreement (V = 0.93 and V = 0.92, respectively). CONCLUSION: This study defined a list of 102 items across 5 different domains (terminology, rationale and clinical reasoning, subjective examination, physical examination, and treatment) regarding the KC in people with shoulder pain. The term "KC" was preferred and a agreement on a definition of this concept was reached. Dysfunction of a segment in the chain (ie, weak link) was agreed to result in altered performance or injury to distal segments. Experts considered it important to assess and treat the KC in particular in throwing or overhead athletes and agreed that no one-size-fits-all approach exists when implementing shoulder KC exercises within the rehabilitation process. Further research is now required to determine the validity of the identified items.

Taping is a popular approach and is often used as part of a multifactorial injury prevention programme for athletes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the current literature regarding the effects of shoulder taping in overhead athletes. Literature search was performed related to rotational range of motion (RoM), posterior shoulder tightness (PST), kinematics, muscular activity, acromiohumeral distance (AHD), proprioception, strength, and performance. Twenty studies were eligible. The majority of the applied taping methods were scapular and humeral head repositioning taping. Across all studies, there was limited to moderate evidence in favour of taping in overhead athletes with regard to rotational RoM, AHD, proprioception, and altering scapular kinematics, while taping did not enhance PST, muscular activity, shoulder strength, and performance. Therefore, the current evidence showed taping can alter some of the investigated factors that may have a therapeutic or preventive role. However, in the management of the athlete shoulder, taping-only approaches should not be focused on, and taping can be integrated in a more comprehensive approach for the overhead athletes.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder pain is a common symptom for non-traumatic shoulder pathologies and affects 4.7-66.7% of entire population. Even with the latest technological advantages, palpation still is a cost and time efficient tool to evaluate the shoulder pathologies. Our aim was to investigate and compare palpation findings in different shoulder pathologies. METHOD: We used first assessments of impingement syndrome (IS) (n = 205), rotator cuff tear (RCT) (n = 185) and frozen shoulder (FS) (n = 210) patients who received treatment between 2010 and 2019 years. Two experienced physiotherapists palpated predefined points: long head of biceps brachii, pectoralis minor, lateral intermuscular septum, proximal tendons of extensor group. These points categorized into "proximal", "mid-proximal", "mid-distal", "distal", "irregular". We also grouped patients by their BMIs. RESULTS: We found RCT patients had higher BMI than IS and FS patients (p < 0.001, p = 0.001); more tender intermuscular septum points and night pain than IS patients (p = 0.001, p = 0.003) and more extensor group proximal tendon points than IS and FS patients (p < 0.001, p = 0.001). "No tenderness" group had lesser resting pain than distal group (p < 0.001) and lesser activity and night pain than middle-proximal, middle-distal, and distal groups (all ps < 0.002). Distal group had higher night pain than middle-proximal group (p = 0.003). Morbidly obese patients had higher night pain than normal and overweight patients (p = 0.003 and p = 0.009). CONCLUSIONS: Tender point distribution varies depending on the pathology with biceps brachii being the most common. RCT patients had higher night pain related to more distal tender points. Patients with higher night pain had increased tenderness in septum intermuscular and extensor muscles' proximal tendons.

CONTEXT: Knowledge on how to utilize a kinetic chain approach in foot and ankle rehabilitation is important. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of hip-focused neuromuscular exercise on foot pronation and single-leg neuromuscular control. DESIGN: Cross-over study. SETTING: University laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: This cross-over study included 44 asymptomatic volunteers with foot pronation. INTERVENTIONS: All participants performed (1) a hip-focused neuromuscular exercise and (2) a sham exercise in randomized order. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Foot pronation was assessed by the navicular drop test, and lower-extremity neuromuscular control was assessed by the Modified Star Excursion Balance Test and frontal plane projection angle during single-leg squat before and after the experiments. RESULTS: Navicular drop test scores were significantly lower after the hip-focused neuromuscular exercise than after the sham exercise (mean difference [95% CI] = 2.84 [-1.08 to 6.77], P = .003). Modified Star Excursion Balance Test scores in the anterior (P = .008), posteromedial (P = .04), and posterolateral (P < .001) directions were significantly increased after hip-focused neuromuscular exercise. No statistically significant condition × time interaction was found for the frontal plane projection angle (P > .05). However, a main effect of time (P = .003) indicated that less dynamic knee valgus occurred during single-leg squat after both experiments. CONCLUSIONS: Hip-focused neuromuscular exercise produced immediate alterations in foot pronation and dynamic balance. Thus, the hip-focused neuromuscular exercise may be used to control foot posture in foot rehabilitation integrated with a kinetic chain approach and could be an effective prevention and treatment strategy.

Although three-dimensional electromagnetic systems are widely used to evaluate the 3-dimensional scapular kinematics their reliability when testing bilateral upper extremity tasks is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the repeatability of the scapular kinematic analyses using the Flock of Birds (FOB) system during bilateral upper extremity movements. Twenty-one volunteers without shoulder problems were included (aged 24.8 years; body mass index averaged 21.2 kg/m2) to the study. Scapular internal-external rotation, upward-downward rotation, and anterior-posterior tilt was recorded during bilateral arm elevation on sagittal, scapular and frontal planes. Measurements were repeated at 5-7 days intervals. Intra-session and inter-session repeatability were determined using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) scores and standard errors of measurements (SEM). The ICC scores were found to be 0.81 to 0.99 for intra-session measurements and 0.60 to 0.83 for inter-session measurements. The SEM scores were 0.8°-3.4° and 2°-7.2° for the intra and inter-session measurements respectively. The repeatability of the FOB system was excellent for the intra-session measurements, but it was weaker for the inter-session measurements. These results support the use of the FOB system for assessing scapular orientation but the analyses should be conducted more carefully when it is applied to the longitudinal measurements.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of scapular repositioning using an elastic taping technique on the three-dimensional (3-D) shoulder and thoracic kinematics during various activities of daily living (ADLs) in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (IS). METHODS: Shoulder and spine kinematics during five ADL movement tasks were assessed in 24 adolescents with IS (3 males and 21 females; mean age: 15.8 years; age range: 14-17 years) before and 15 min after elastic scapular taping. All the participants had a moderate curve magnitude (Cobb angle: 20°-45°), with a primary thoracic curve. A 3-D electromagnetic tracking system (Ascension Technology Corporation, Shelburne, VT, USA) was used to record 3-D shoulder and thoracic kinematics. ADL movement tasks included touching the mouth/drinking, touching the back, touching the contralateral shoulder, reaching upward, and bilateral 4-kg weight lifting. Two separate strips of elastic tape were applied using the same correction technique for each shoulder and scapular region to control scapular alterations in the resting position. RESULTS: Elastic scapular taping significantly improved scapular external rotation and scapular upward rotation. Similarly, humeral horizontal adduction, external rotation, thoracic flexion, and lateral bending significantly increased in the taped condition depending on the specific task (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Elastic scapular taping can change scapular orientations on the convex and concave sides, thereby affecting upper extremity and trunk kinematics. Thus, the dynamic stability of the scapula increases to produce larger movements during functional activities. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV, Therapeutic study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the superiority of scapular mobilization, manual capsule stretching, and the combination of these two techniques in the treatment of frozen shoulder patients to evaluate the acute effects of these techniques on shoulder movements. METHODS: This study designed to a single-blinded, randomized, and pre-post assessment study. This study was included 54 patients diagnosed with stage 3 frozen shoulder. Group 1 (n=27) received scapular mobilization, and Group 2 (n=27) received manual posterior capsule stretching. After the patients were assessed, the interventions were re-applied with a crossover design to obtain results for the combined application (n=54). The range of motion, active total elevation, active internal rotation, and posterior capsule tensions of the shoulder joint were recorded before and immediately after mobilization. RESULTS: Statistical analysis showed an increase in all range of motion values (p<0.05), except for shoulder internal rotation (p>0.05), without significant difference among the groups (p>0.05). The posterior capsule flexibility did not change in any group (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Scapular mobilization and manual posterior capsule interventions were effective in improving the acute joint range of motion in frozen shoulder patients.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of scapular taping on scapular kinematics by three-dimensional electromagnetic system during shoulder elevation in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy patients. A total of 11 patients with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy were included in the study. Scapular anterior-posterior tilt, upward-downward rotation, and internal-external rotations were evaluated using the three-dimensional electromagnetic system during the elevation of the upper limbs in the scapular plane before and after kinesio taping. For maximum humerothoracic elevation, there were no differences between the patients before and after taping on both dominant (p = 0.72) and non-dominant sides (p = 0.64). For scapular internal rotation, upward rotation, and posterior tilt, there were no differences between patients before and after taping during humerothoracic elevation on both dominant and non-dominant sides (p > 0.05). These results showed us that the excessive and abnormal movements of the scapula observed during the humeral elevation in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy patients cannot be supported with flexible methods like kinesio taping. Therefore, we recommend to evaluate the scapula position by applying flexible and rigid taping to the patients who can reach over 90o in humerothoracic elevation in future studies.

J Strength Cond Res 33(5): 1305-1310, 2019-The Ballistic Six exercise program includes commonly used upper-body exercises, and the program is recommended for overhead throwing athletes. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of a 12-week the Ballistic Six upper-extremity plyometric training program on upper-body explosive power, endurance, and reaction time in pediatric overhead athletes. Twenty-eight female pediatric volleyball players participated in the study. The participants were randomly divided into 2 study groups: an intervention group (upper-extremity plyometric training in addition to the volleyball training; n = 14) and a control group (the volleyball training only; n = 14). All the participants were assessed before and after a 12-week training program for upper-body power, strength and endurance, and reaction time. Statistical comparison was performed using an analysis of variance test. Comparisons showed that after a 12-week training program, the Ballistic Six upper-body plyometric training program resulted in more improvements in an overhead medicine ball throwing distance and a push-up performance, as well as greater improvements in the reaction time in the nonthrowing arm when compared with control training. In addition, a 12-week training program was found to be effective in achieving improvements in the reaction time in the throwing arm for both groups similarly. Compared with regular training, upper-body plyometric training resulted in additional improvements in upper-body power and strength and endurance among pediatric volleyball players. The findings of the study provide a basis for developing training protocols for pediatric volleyball players.

Adult overhead athletes without a history of shoulder injury show scapular adaptations. There is a lack of detailed assessment of scapular kinematics in junior overhead athletes. This study aims to investigate three-dimensional scapular kinematics in junior overhead athletes. We recruited a total of 20 junior tennis players and 20 healthy children without participation in any overhead sports in this study. Bilateral scapular kinematic data were recorded using an electromagnetic tracking device for scapular plane glenohumeral elevation. The data were further analysed at 30°, 45°, 60°, 90° and 120° during glenohumeral elevation and lowering. Statistical comparisons of the data between groups (junior overhead athletes and non-overhead athletes) and sides (serve dominant and non-dominant shoulders of the overhead athletes) were analysed with the ANOVA. Comparisons showed that, in general, the scapula was more upwardly rotated and anteriorly tilted in overhead athletes when compared to non-overhead athletes, however there was no side-to-side differences when serve dominant and non-dominant shoulders compared in junior overhead athletes. The serve dominant arm of junior overhead athletes had alternations in scapular kinematics when compared with the non-overhead athletes. These findings provide clinical evaluation implications and the need for clinicians to assess for potential adaptations in junior overhead athletes.
