RESUMO

Most wild parrot species live in flocks, enriched by the environment and conspecific interactions. Captive parrots often live individually and are prone to behavioral maladaptation. If captive parrots and their behavior become intolerable, they are commonly relinquished to rescue organizations. This study aims to create parrot personality assessments for use by rescuers adding newly acquired parrots to shared environments. The study involved 20 orange-winged Amazon parrots (10 M, 10 F). Observers familiar with each bird scored its personality and analyses determined three sets of personalities: Social, Guarded, and Nervous Each parrot was paired with its 10 heterosexual counterparts and its interactions monitored remotely and captured on video. Pairing trials occurred over 72 hours in a specially designed pairing structure. Parrot personality could predict pairing success. Social-Guarded and Social-Nervous were more successfully paired, with individuals maintaining a close distance to one another and displaying increased rest-stretch behavior. Time of day influenced success with Social-Nervous pairs successful at all times of day, Social-Social pairs in the AM, and Guarded-Guarded pairs in the PM period. The study results suggest that rescues can use personality assessment and specific behaviors during cohabitation to predict OWA novel pairing outcomes.

Reducing the growing burden of acute kidney injury (AKI) is a real challenge. This article explores admissions and emergency visits of patients with AKI in California between 2005 and 2015. Data were drawn from California's Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) hospital dataset. Trend analyses, including comorbidities and spatiotemporal analysis, were conducted. AKI hospital episodes almost doubled between 2005 and 2015 (25,495 vs. 48,845, respectively); the growing trend was largely attributable to an increasing number of patients with co-existing CKD and diabetes or hypertension (2,511 vs. 25,098 in 2005 and 2015, respectively). We also found an increasingly positive spatiotemporal correlation between diabetes prevalence and AKI hospitalization rate over time. Based on results of this study, we identified modifiable targets to reduce the growing number of AKI episodes and the potential escalating health care costs.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP) is a critical component in the management of intracranial hypertension. Safety, efficacy, and optimal location of microsensor devices have not been defined in dogs. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVE: Assessment of ICP using a microsensor transducer is feasible in anesthetized and conscious animals and is independent of transducer location. Intraparenchymal transducer placement is associated with more adverse effects. ANIMALS: Seven adult, bred-for-research dogs. METHODS: In a prospective investigational study, microsensor ICP transducers were inserted into subdural and intraparenchymal locations at defined rostral or caudal locations within the rostrotentorial compartment under general anesthesia. Mean arterial pressure and ICP were measured continuously during physiological maneuvers, and for 20 hours after anesthesia. RESULTS: Baseline mean ± SD values for ICP and cerebral perfusion pressure were 7.2 ± 2.3 and 78.9 ± 7.6 mm Hg, respectively. Catheter position did not have a significant effect on ICP measurements. There was significant variation from baseline ICP accompanying physiological maneuvers (P < .001) and with normal activities, especially with changes in head position (P < .001). Pathological sequelae were more evident after intraparenchymal versus subdural placement. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Use of a microsensor ICP transducer was technically straightforward and provided ICP measurements within previously reported reference ranges. Results support the use of an accessible dorsal location and subdural positioning. Transient fluctuations in ICP are normal events in conscious dogs and large variations associated with head position should be accounted for when evaluating animals with intracranial hypertension.
