[A double-blind, placebo-controlled study on the efficacy of Rinasek in symptomatic treatment of seasonal and non-seasonal rhinitis]. / Dvostruko slepa placebom kontrolisana studija za ocenu efikasnosti primene leka Rinasek u simptomatskom lecenju sezonskog i nesezonskog rinitisa.

In order to assess the efficacy of Rinasek in symptomatic treatment of seasonal and nonseasonal rhinitis, 40 ambulatory otorhinolaryngologic patients were multicentrically examined in a placebo controlled double-blind study. Clinical and other findings show that the drug worked excellent in 46.6%, well in 13.3%, weak in 13.3% and in 10% of patients it had no effects. Consequently, Rinasek worked positively in 73.2%, and that is the best reason to recommend its application.

[Mastocytes in the diagnosis of chronic rhinitis]. / Mastociti u dijagnostici hronicnih rinitisa.

In order to detect the allergic etiology of the disease, we looked for mastocytes in 18 patients with chronic vasomotor rhinitis 5 of these patients also had nasal polyposis. Mastocytes were found neither in the nasal smear of any patients nor in the scarification smear nor in the nasal smear of any patients nor in the scarification smear nor in the smear of the biopsy material, but they were found in the deeper layers of the nasal mucosa. They were regularly in the stroma and always with lymphoplasm-histocyte infiltrations. Prick-tests were negative in 13 out of 18 tested patients. By a follow up of 13 patients with chronic rhinitis it was established that findings of 7 patients were in correlation. In 3 patients skin tests, were positive and mastocytes present, while in 4 patients both of these parameters were negative. In 2 patients skin tests were positive and mastocytes negative, while in the other 4 patients skin tests were negative with a positive mastocyte finding, which points to allergy. Finally, in patients with nasal polyposis skin tests were negative with mastocytes positive in 4 out of 5 patients. The gathered results reveal that mastocytes were found in 11 out of 18 examined patients, that is in 61%, which is an encouraging fact and demands a further follow up and checking in a larger number of cases.

[Perforation of the nasal septum due to sarcoidosis]. / Perforacija nosne pregrade uzrokovana sarkoidozom.

A female patient, 43 years old, with a combined pulmonary and extrapulmonary sarcoidosis of nose accompanied with a spontaneous perforation of septum is described. It has not been easy to make a diagnosis, and it was made on the basis of bronchobiopsy and pathohistologic analysis of nasal septum's mucus. It has finally been confirmed by ex invantibus therapy, for the patient reacted well to corticosteroids.

[Bacterial study in patients with chronic disease of the palatine tonsils]. / Bakterijsko ispitivanje hronicno obolelih palatinalih tonzila.

At the Otorhinolaryngology Clinic in Novi Sad, 58 patients, from 2 to 53 years of age, with chronic palatine tonsillitis were bacteriologically examined. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated in most patients and was detected in 21 patients on the surface of the tonsil and in 25 patients at the place of a cut. Streptococcus pyogenes group A occurred only in 3 patients, group B in 1 patient which amounts to 5.17%, and 1.72%. The percentage of patients in whom rheumatism occurred was similar. The author points out the fact that there is a great disproportion between the number of patients who undergo surgery and number of complications at distant organs and appeals to reduction of indications for tonsillectomy to a reasonable level.

[Comparative value of skin tests and IgE antibodies in the serum in patients with chronic vasomotor rhinitis]. / Uporedne vrednosti koznog testiranja i IgE antitela u serumu obolelih od hronicnog vazomotornog rinitisa.

In order to assess values of skin testing and determination of pulp, as a credible indicator considering sensibilisation of an organism, 61 patients suffering from chronic vasomotor rhinitis were tested. By application of "prick" test, skin test results were positive in 30 patients and negative in 31. Presence of specific IgE antibodies in the serum was assessed in all patients by "ELISA" test. In 51 patients (83.6%) both kinds of findings corresponded. In 26 patients both skin parameters were negative while in 10 patients (16.40%) findings did not correspond. It was established that for Dermatophagodies pteronyssinus specific IgE antibodies are determined in serum when pap is 5 mm wide. Grasp pollen always caused strong local reactions, regularly more than 10 mm. Considerably high levels of IgE antibodies was also established while other pollens did not show such correspondence.

[Rhabdomyosarcomas in otorhinolaryngology]. / Rabdomiosarkomi u otorinolaringologiji.

The study reports two patients with very rare tumors, rhabdomyosarcomas. The first case was a six-year-old girl with tumor in the right nostril and epipharynx, the second was a 66-year-old male patient with protuberances in the hypopharynx. The diagnosis was based on the PH analysis. One case was treated with air therapy, the other was surgically treated. Both died soon after, the fact that points to an enormous malignant potential and unfavorable prognosis for the diseased.

[Foreign bodies in the esophagus in children]. / Strana tela jednjaka kod dece.

The study describes 3 children with strange foreign bodies in the esophagus, one aged 14 the other two 8 and 13 months respectively. A metal hanger hook was found in the first one, a lollypop with a plastic stick 10 cm long in the second and a painting brush 21 cm long in the third one. Two of the foreign bodies were removed ambulatory, the third one hospitally. The interventions were not followed by complications.

[Case report of unilateral congenital choanal atresia]. / Slucaj jednostrane urodene hoanalne atrezije.

A case of unilateral inborn choanal atresia was described in a baby of the age of 4 months. The anomaly was solved by the endonasal approach, which the author recommends as the method of choice in the treatment of choanal atresias because it is very simple, safe and easy to conduct. The paper also discusses other operative methods as well as the best time for conducting the intervention.

[Giant osteomas of the paranasal sinuses]. / Gigantski osteomi paranazalnih supljina.

At the Otorhinolaryngologic Department in Novi Sad we investigated osteomas of the paranasal cavities registered from 1960 to 1989. The total number of the treated patients was 30, aged from 31 to 60 years. A special attention is given to a female patient, aged 65 years with osteoma covering two thirds of the right nostril, both ethmoids and right retrobulbar space. It progressed upwards to the base of the skull causing denudation of the dura mater at the surface of 2.5 x 1.5 cm, and consecutive liquorrhea. The removed tumor weighed 110 grams and belonged to giant osteomas of the paranasal cavities.

[Results of skin tests 1981 to 1989]. / Rezultati koznog testiranja u periodu od 1981. do 1989. godine.

In the aim of proving the existence of organism sensitivity to standard group inhalation antigens, at the ORL Clinic in Novi Sad, in the period of 1981 through July, 1989, intradermal testing was conducted in 1816 patients. The greatest number of positive reactions appeared within the city inhabitants, mostly of female sex. Most frequently they reacted to house dust (53.19%), pollen (37.88%), Ambrosia (18.17%), Dermatophagoides pteronissynus (11.17%), and much less frequently to other allergens. With regard to the fact that intradermal tests are not quite safe, the authors have adopted the prick test in their further work, because it is very easy to perform, it's quick, cheap, very sensitive, and it gives distinctly positive and negative responses. Its correlation with clinical manifestations and RAST is good, and what's most important, it does not cause any local or general side effects.

[Rhinolithiasis complicated by purulent dacryocystitis]. / Rinolitijaza komplikovana purulentnim dakriocistitom.

A female patient aged 80 with rhinolith in the right nostril was described. She developed typical symptomatology in the sense of one-sided difficult nose-breathing, abundant, purulent, fetid excretions complicated by purulent dacryocystitisin the right eye. The diagnosis was established on the basis of anamnesis and clinical finding and was radiologically confirmed. It was solved by concassation and removal of the rhinolyth. Postoperative course was uneventful.

[Immunoglobulins in chronic tonsillitis]. / Imunoglobulini kod hronicnog tonzilita.

Thirty patients aged 3-40 were tonsillectomized at the Clinic of Otorhinolaryngology in Novi Sad. The tonsils removed were fluoroscentically investigated to establish the presence of G, A and M immunoglobulins. The presence of all three immunoglobulin classes was confirmed in 60% of the investigated samples of tonsillar tissue. IgG producing plasma cells were seen in the largest number while IgA producing plasma cells were noticed in the least number. Immunoglobulins were positioned on the surface of the epithelium and in the subepithelial tissue. However, plasma cells were localized in interfollicular spaces in 85% of the cases which pointed to the existence of local immunoglobulin synthesis inasmuch as plasma cells were not found at all in 10% of the patients. Parallel pathohistologic and other investigations being now under way would give the basis for final opinion on local immunoglobulin synthesis and its part in chronic tonsillitis.
