BACKGROUND: Leukoaraiosis (LA) is a common radiological finding in elderly, frequently associated with several clinical disorders, including unexplained dizziness. The pathogenesis of LA is multifactorial, with a dysfunction of cerebral microcirculation resulting in chronic hypoperfusion and tissue loss, with oxidative stress involved in this cascade. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyse some oxidative stress biomarkers in a cohort of LA patients. METHOD: Fifty-five consecutive patients (33 males, median age 75 years) with LA were recruited. In a subgroup of 33 patients with LA and unexplained dizziness, we have then performed an open study to evaluate if 60-day supplementation with a polyphenol compound may modify these biomarkers and influence quality of life, analysed with the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) scale. RESULTS: At baseline, blood oxidative stress parameters values were outside normal ranges and compared to matched healthy controls. After the two months supplementation, we observed a significant decrement of advanced oxidation protein products values and a significant improvement of DHI. CONCLUSION: Oxidative stress biomarkers may be useful to detect redox imbalance in LA and to provide non-invasive tools to monitor disease status and response to therapy.

Common cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) abnormalities are a common neuroradiological finding, especially in the elderly. They are associated with a wide clinical spectrum that leads to an increasing disability, impaired global function outcome and a reduced quality of life. A strong association is demonstrated with age and hypertension and other common vascular risk factors, including diabetes mellitus, dyslipoproteinemia, smoking, low vitamin B12 level, and hyperomocysteinemia. Although these epidemiological associations suggest a systemic involvement, etiopathogenetic mechanisms remain unclear. This review focuses on the potential role of endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress in the pathogenic cascade leading to cSVD. We stressed on the central role of those pathways, and suggest the importance of quantifying the cerebral (and non-only) "endotheliopathic and oxidative load" and its clinical presentation that could lead to a better determination of vascular risk degree. In addition, understanding underlying pathogenic mechanisms could allow us to slow down the progression of vascular damage and, therefore, prevent the disability due to reiterated microvascular damage.

Spontaneous dissection of cervical arteries (sCAD) is a major cause of ischemic stroke in young patients, with an incidence varying from 1.7 to 3/100,000/year for extracranial internal carotid artery (ICAD) and 1 to 1.9/100,000/year for extracranial vertebral artery (VAD). Reliable epidemiological data on stroke incidence related to sCAD are scarce in Italy. This study aims to evaluate the incidence, clinical features, and outcome of cerebrovascular events related to sCAD and spontaneous intracranial arteries dissections (sIAD) in the city of Pisa (Italy). We retrospectively analyzed consecutive patients admitted between December 1997 and June 2015 with a diagnosis of stroke, TIA, or Bernard-Horner syndrome due to acute cervical or intracranial artery dissection. Considering that our hospital collects presumptively all patients hospitalized with sCAD coming from the referral geographical area, data may provide a good approximation to real incidence of sCAD in our population. Clinical and radiological features, acute treatment and outcome were collected. Seventy-seven cases were included (mean age 48.1±10.4 years, range 23-77,72.7% males), 66 residents in the district of Pisa. Crude incidence rate of cerebrovascular events due to intra or extracranial dissection was 1.88/100,000/year. The incidence of ICAD was 0.80/100,000/year and 0.43/100,000/year for VAD. Stroke occurred in 76.6% of patients. VAD was more prone to cause ischemic stroke and present with cervical pain or focal signs (p < 0.01) than ICAD group, which had older age at onset. sIAD were more frequent in the posterior circle (p = 0.01) and more associated with ischemic lesions. A good outcome (mRS 0-2) was observed in 79% of patients. This is the first epidemiological attempt to investigate impact of sCAD and sIAD in Italy.

We have investigated the local and electronic structure of solid rubidium by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy up to 101.0 GPa, thus doubling the maximum investigated experimental pressure. This study confirms the predicted stability of phase VI and was completed by the combination of two pivotal instrumental solutions. On one side, we made use of nanocrystalline diamond anvils, which, contrary to the more commonly used single crystal diamond anvils, do not generate sharp Bragg peaks (glitches) at specific energies that spoil the weak fine structure oscillations in the x-ray absorption cross section. Second, we exploited the performance of a state-of-the-art x-ray focussing device yielding a beam spot size of 5 × 5 µm(2), spatially stable over the entire energy scan. An advanced data analysis protocol was implemented to extract the pressure dependence of the structural parameters in phase VI of solid Rb from 51.2 GPa up to the highest pressure. A continuous reduction of the nearest neighbour distances was observed, reaching about 6% over the probed pressure range. We also discuss a phenomenological model based on the Einstein approximation to describe the pressure behaviour of the mean-square relative displacement. Within this simplified scheme, we estimate the Grüneisen parameter for this high pressure Rb phase to be in the 1.3-1.5 interval.

Inelastic neutron scattering and Raman scattering spectra of a melt-infiltrated composite of NaAlH(4) and active carbon fibers have been measured at low temperature for two sample conditions: as prepared and subjected to hydrogen desorption-absorption cycling. After a careful data analysis, the present experimental results have been compared to the corresponding spectroscopic data taken from bulk NaAlH(4) and Na(3)AlH(6). Evident signatures induced by infiltration process onto the NaAlH(4) phonon bands have been detected, showing up as a strong peak broadening and smoothing together with, in some cases, an energy shift. Traces of Na(3)AlH(6), appearing as an extra intensity between 130 and 200 meV, seem also confirmed. A substantial agreement between neutron and Raman measurements has been found for the as-prepared melt-infiltrated sample, while for the cycled sample the two techniques produced rather dissimilar results. However, this apparent discrepancy can be explained by considering the different penetration depths of the two spectroscopic probes. Further work, both experimental and based on ab initio simulations, is surely needed in order to rationalize the finding of the present measurements.

A Raman investigation of the AlH(3) polymorph has been carried out at a low temperature (20 K) under helium atmosphere (2 bar). The pristine material was composed of three polymorphs, namely, the α, ß, and γ phases. The ß phase has been removed by warming the sample to 70 °C, while further heating at 100 °C was used to remove the γ phase. This allowed us to evidence, on a purely experimental basis, the characteristic Raman spectrum for each phase. Raman spectra, for the three phases, have been also calculated using density functional theory, and the results have been compared to the present experimental data, allowing for a univocal assignment, to each phase, of its characteristic spectral features.

RESUMO

Raman spectra of Mg(BH(4))(2) have been measured in an extensive temperature range, from 15 to 473 K. Taking into account the high temperature conversion from the alpha to the beta phase, we have observed evident signatures of this phase transition and determined the Raman vibrational spectrum of each phase. The neutron scattering spectra of the beta phase sample were also recorded. The present experimental results have been compared to the density functional theory calculations available in the literature, and a substantial agreement has been found.

RESUMO

We report the design and realization of an integrated system for measuring, at the same time, the thermodynamic and spectroscopic features of nanoporous materials interesting for hydrogen storage purposes. The whole investigation cycle, from thermal activation to the actual investigation of uptake and release of hydrogen, is carried out in the same vacuum tight vessel, equipped with an optical window, whose temperature can range between 10 and 750 K, up to a maximum pressure of 50 bars. The system has been designed to investigate properties of carbon nanotubes but its use can be extended to any kind of nanoporous sample such as, for example, carbon nanofibers, zeolytes, metal organic frameworks, and similar materials.

RESUMO

Simple diatomic molecules exhibit a variety of exciting physical phenomena under high pressures, including structural transitions, pressure induced metallization, and superconductivity. Oxygen is of particular interest because it carries a magnetic moment. For the first time we studied the magnetic structure in solid oxygen under very high pressure by a direct method, namely, neutron diffraction. A new type of magnetic order with ferromagnetic stacking of the antiferromagnetic O2 planes was discovered in delta-O2 at P=6.2 GPa. We show that all structural transformations at pressures <7 GPa are driven by spin interactions; therefore, high-pressure oxygen should be considered as a unique "spin-controlled crystal."

An extended temperature and pressure-dependent investigation is carried out on a La0.75Ca0.25MnO3 sample exploiting the infrared absorption technique coupled to a diamond anvil cell. The pressure dependence of the insulator to metal transition temperature T(IM) is determined for the first time up to 11.2 GPa. The T(IM)(P) curve we propose to model the present data has an exponential-like behavior with an associated characteristic pressure P* playing the role of a decay constant. It is found that the equivalence between an external and an internal (chemical) pressure holds over a limited range of pressure, namely, P< or =2P*. Moreover, a certain universality character is associated with the proposed model curve in its ability to account for a large class of low-disorder manganites characterized by intermediate electron-phonon coupling.

We report the pressure evolution, up to 70 GPa, of the fine structure of the S0(0) rotational excitation in the high-pressure Ar(H(2))(2) compound (with almost 100% para-H(2)) at about 30 K. A perturbative theoretical analysis is developed to calculate intensities and frequency shifts of the active Raman rotational components, on the basis of the intermolecular anisotropic interaction. The comparison between experimental results up to 35 GPa and calculation allows a reliable determination of the anisotropic intermolecular potential in the solid, both for H(2)-H(2) and H(2)-Ar at short range. Such results are important for the interpretation of the high-pressure orientational properties of solid hydrogen.
