RESUMO

Background: The clinical findings, laboratory alterations, and prognosis of primary type 3 abomasal ulcer (AU3) are poorly reported in the literature. Aims: To describe clinical findings, hemato-biochemical changes, and peritoneal fluid changes in bovines suffering from primary AU3, and to monitor responses to medical treatment and outcomes. Methods: The study included 32 bovines (20 cattle and 12 buffaloes) diagnosed with primary AU3 along with a control group. Results: Common clinical findings were depressed demeanor, anorexia, dehydration, scanty feces, melena, mushy atonic rumen, tachycardia, and tachypnea. Colic was observed in 56.3% of animals. The mean hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet count, and lymphocyte count were lower (P≤0.05), while WBC and neutrophil count were higher than the values of the control group (P≤0.05). The levels of BHBA, NEFA, glucose, total bilirubin, AST, CK, LDH, BUN, creatinine, and lactate were higher (P≤0.05), while cholesterol, total protein, albumin, sodium, potassium, chloride, and calcium were lower than the values of the control group (P≤0.05). The rumen chloride concentration was increased. The left shift was observed in a higher percentage of nonsurvivors than survivors (P≤0.05). The nonsurvivors had higher levels of bilirubin, CK, LDH, BUN, creatinine, and rumen chloride (P≤0.05), and lower levels of total protein, albumin, and globulin (P≤0.05). Conclusion: Type 3 abomasal ulcers occurred during the various stages of lactation as well as in pregnant animals. The response to medical treatment was fair, long time survival rate was good, and there was no recurrence. There was no effect on fetal survival or milk yield in the subsequent lactation.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study was aimed to determine the effect of advanced pregnancy on the topography and size of the omasum in 22 healthy Murrah buffaloes. The omasum was scanned 15-20 days before and after parturition, as per the standard procedure. The dorsal and ventral margins of the omasum were identified and marked at each intercostal space (ICS). The dorsal and ventral limits up to the dorsal midline were measured. The omasum was scanned in 6th to 11th ICS during advanced pregnancy and 7th to 11th ICS after the parturition. Irrespective of the pregnancy, the dorsal and ventral margins of the omasum were located farther dorsal and close to the spine in the 6th, 7th and 11th ICS. Except in one buffalo, the omasum was scanned in four consecutive ICS during the advanced pregnancy. After parturition the omasum was scanned in four and five consecutive ICS in 17 and five buffaloes, respectively. The mean dorsal and ventral limits of the omasum increased significantly (P .

The present study determined trends in the isolation of bacterial pathogens in milk samples submitted from clinical mastitis buffaloes at the University mastitis laboratory during 2007 to 2016. Culture results (n = 3945) were classified into six categories (Staphylococcus spp., 28.7%; Streptococcus spp., 1%; Corynebacterium spp., 1.1%; gram-negative organisms, 3.2%; others including mixed growths, 3.3%; and no growth, 62.7%). Overall, culture results were significantly associated with year (χ2 = 112.28; df = 10; P < 0.001) and season (χ2 = 136.03; df = 20; P < 0.001). From 2007-2009 to 2013-2016, the isolation of Staphylococcus spp. increased from 28.2 to 48.4%, while isolation of Streptococcus spp. (50 to 20%) and Corynebacterium spp. (65.1 to 16.3%) decreased. The proportion of samples characterized as no growth increased from 26.4% (2007-2009) to 46.3% (2013-2016). Further, the proportion of clinical mastitis cases increased over the study years (goodness-of-fit χ2 = 59; df = 2; P < 0.001). With respect to season, the proportion of Staphylococcus spp. (30.6%; 346/1132), Corynebacterium spp. (48.8%; 21/43), and gram-negative bacteria (55.9%; 71/127) were more associated with the monsoon, and that of Streptococcus spp. (47.5%; 19/40) with the winter. Seasonal effects were also observed on the occurrence of clinical mastitis cases; comparatively, more clinical mastitis cases (35.6%; 523/1473) were observed during the monsoon season (goodness-of-fit χ2 = 276.7; df = 4; P < 0.001) as compared with other seasons. The present study concludes that Staphylococcus spp. are the major cause of intramammary infections in buffaloes with clinical mastitis, demanding more studies regarding its epidemiology and pathogenicity. Also, more efforts are needed in the prevention and control of clinical mastitis in buffaloes, especially, during the monsoon season.

RESUMO

The clinical symptoms associated with hydatid disease in the bovine populations remain largely unknown and the disease is usually considered asymptomatic in these intermediate hosts. We report occurrence of symptoms such as sudden onset of continuous stridor, coughing and wheezing due to hydatid cysts present in the lungs of infected cattle and buffalo. Two cattle and one buffalo presented to the Teaching Veterinary Hospital, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University with the complaint of continuous stridor, coughing and wheezing with normal feed and water intake were followed up. The comprehensive clinical examination followed by haematology, radiography of upper and lower respiratory tract, ultrasonography of lungs, liver and reticulum revealed presence of multiple hydatid cysts in the lung parenchyma. There was presence of subcutaneous emphysema in one of the infected animal. Radiography revealed cysts occupying up to 60% of alveolar space in the lungs. Endoscopy up to hilus was carried out to rule out the presence of any other mass/lesion in the respiratory tract. Per cutaneous aspiration (Ultrasound guided) of cystic fluid confirmed the diagnosis and fertile nature of hydatid cysts. The current study reports association of stridor and emphysema with hydatid disease in bovine hosts and it is important that veterinary practitioners in endemic areas consider hydatid disease for differential diagnosis when investigating the etiology of stridor and emphysema in bovine intermediate hosts.

RESUMO

A 4 year old male Rottweiler was presented to Teaching Veterinary Clinics of GADVASU with a primary complaint of paraplegia, fever and inappetence. The dog was found to be dull with elevated rectal temperature (105 °F), heart rate (158 per minute) and respiration rate (57 per minute). Blood smear examination and PCR assay revealed that dog was positive for Babesia gibsoni. Elevated bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, total leucocyte count, neutrophils and hypoglycaemia were haemato-biochemical alterations. The therapy targeting babesiosis was carried out with a single dose of diminazene aceturate in combination with doxycycline, enrofloxacin and metronidazole for 21 days. Complete follow up of the case revealed complete clinical recovery within 21 days.

RESUMO

The present investigation aims to establish the reason(s) why dairy cows with high somatic cell counts (SCCs; >100,000 cells/ml) are less fertile than cows with low SCCs alone. The objective of Study One was to determine whether differences in steroid hormone profiles could explain the low incidence of ovulation in cows with combined High SCC and lameness. Between 30 and 80 days post-partum, animals were scored for SCC and lameness and three groups were formed: Healthy (n=22), High SCC alone (n=12) or High SCC + Lame (n=9). The ovarian follicular phases of all cows were synchronised by administering gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) followed seven days later by prostaglandin F2alpha (PG). Milk samples were collected daily throughout the entire study period; twice daily during the follicular phase, blood samples were taken and the ovaries were monitored using ultrasonography. Progesterone concentrations were similar in all three groups during each of five specific time periods, i.e. throughout the five days before PG injection, the peri-ovulatory period, on Day 5 and on Day 7, and during the mid luteal phase 12-17 days after ovulation (P>0.13). Mean plasma oestradiol concentrations monitored every 12h during the 36h period before ovulation were similar in all groups (Healthy, 2.80±0.30pg/ml; High SCC alone, 3.82±0.48pg/ml; High SCC+Lame 2.94±0.51pg/ml; P=0.175). The objective of Study Two was to establish whether cows with High SCC (scored and synchronised as above) display different behaviours, especially the intensity and timing of oestrus. Intervals from PG to the onset of oestrus or to the first stand-to-be-mounted (STBM) were longer for the High SCC cows than the Low SCC animals (n=8 and 20; P=0.011 and 0.002, respectively). Also, cows with High SCC tended to have a less intense oestrus and a lower maximum oestrus score per 30-min period than Low SCC cows (P=0.063 and 0.066, respectively). In conclusion, High SCC±lameness did not affect progesterone or twice daily oestradiol profiles but the onset of oestrus was delayed and oestrus tended to be less intense in cows with High SCC. These factors could explain low fertility associated with High SCC.

RESUMO

This study presents the morphometric characteristic of canine haemoprotozoan, Hepatozoon canis, using software DP2-BSW (OLYMPUS). The gametocytes of H. canis found inside the neutrophils were characteristic in shape and size and varied from 9.50 to 11.80 µm × 5.10-6.00 µm. Parasitaemia ranged from 1.00 to 39.00 %. Few gametocytes without nuclei and of abnormal shapes were also observed. The results were compared with the measurements done by using ocular micrometer.

RESUMO

This article communicates the first per-acute and fatal clinical report of transplacental transmission of Theileria equi from carrier mothers to foals from Punjab, India. Two cases of equine piroplasmosis due to T. equi were diagnosed in neonatal foals borne to Throughbred mares. High degree of parasitemia with annular and maltese cross shaped parasites in erythrocytes was seen in both cases. Blood cellular changes revealed leucopenia and neutropenia with mild degenerative left shift. Anaemia was macrocytic normochromic type. Intense yellow discoloration of mucous membranes indicated jaundice. In areas endemic for equine piroplasmosis, jaundice in neonatal foal can be easily misdiagnosed as neonatal isoerythrolysis. Foals with post-partum jaundice should always be screened for equine piroplasmosis.

RESUMO

The blood biochemical and ruminal fluid parameters of 5 buffaloes showing omasal impaction were studied, together with 10 healthy buffaloes as control. The diseased buffaloes had significantly higher serum aspartate aminotransferase, bilirubin, glucose, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, total protein, globulin and fibrinogen levels and significantly lower plasma calcium, potassium and chloride concentrations than the controls. The ruminal liquor of the diseased buffaloes revealed characteristic physical, chemical and microbial changes and had significantly higher methylene blue reduction time and ammonia-nitrogen level.

RESUMO

The effect of increasing concentrations of short-chain fatty acids [SCFA; mixture of the Na+ salts of acetic acid (62.5%), propionic acid (25.0%) and of butyric acid (12.5%)] on Na+ transport of sheep rumen epithelium was studied in vitro. The conventional Ussing chamber method was used for measuring Na+ transport rates (22Na+), short-circuit current (Isc) and tissue conductance (GT) of isolated rumen epithelium. SCFA in the buffer solution on the mucosal side caused a linear increase of Jnet Na+ from 1.14, to 1.22, 1.78 and 2.50 microeq/cm2/h in hay-fed sheep at 0, 15, 40 and 80 mmol/l SCFA, respectively. In a second study, the effect of higher SCFA concentrations [0 (control), 80, 100 and 120 mmol/l] was investigated with epithelia from two groups of sheep. One group was subjected to hay ad libitum, whereas the other received concentrate feed (800 g/day in equal portions at 7.00 am and 3.00 pm) and hay ad libitum. Epithelia from concentrate-fed sheep again showed a significant (p < 0.05) and linear increase in Jnet Na+ at 80, 100 and 120 mmol/l. However, in hay-fed sheep, the difference in increase among 80, 100 and 120 mmol/l SCFA was not significant, indicating that, above 80 mmol/l SCFA Jms and Jnet exhibit saturation. Moreover, Na+ fluxes (Jms and Jnet) were generally higher in concentrate-fed than in hay-fed sheep at all SCFA concentrations and significant differences were observed at 100 and 120 mmol/l SCFA. The obtained results confirm the effect of SCFA on Na+ transport and are in agreement with studies regarding feeding regimes and electrolyte transport in the rumen. The important new observation is the increase of Na+ transport in concentrate-fed sheep even at high concentrations of SCFA (100 and 120 mmol/l). The enhanced activity of the Na+/H+ exchanger at these SCFA concentrations supports the assumption that the capacity for regulating the intracellular pH by extrusion of protons is increased, suggesting an adaptation in concentrate-fed sheep. This adaptation could prevent possible disturbances of epithelial functions (transport and barrier) under conditions of increased SCFA absorption.

RESUMO

The present in vitro experiment was conducted to study the effect of two concentrations of short chain fatty acids [SCFA: 0 (control), 40 and 100 mmol/l in the buffer solution on mucosal side] on calcium ion (Ca2+) transport across the isolated rumen epithelium of two groups of sheep. One group was subjected to hay ad libitum, whereas the other to concentrate feed (800 g per day in equal portion at 7.00 and 15.00 hours and hay ad lib). The conventional Ussing chamber method was used for measuring the Ca2+ transport rates (45Ca), short-circuit current (Isc) and tissue conductance (GT) of isolated rumen epithelium. The SCFA significantly increased Isc of the epithelia of concentrate-fed sheep. In both hay- and concentrate-fed animals, 45Ca flux rates showed an almost linear increase in net flux rate () with rising concentrations of SCFA, as a result of a combined effect of a large increase in mucosal-to-serosal flux rates () and an almost linear, but small, decrease in serosal-to-mucosal flux rate (). In concentrate-fed sheep and were significantly higher in tissues incubated with SCFA compared with hay-fed animals. The well-known adaptable morphological and functional changes in the rumen epithelium attributable to concentrate feeding obviously include Ca2+ transport; such feeding therefore may be considered as a possible prophylactic measure in the prevention of milk fever.
