RESUMO

Marangoni flow is among the most intriguing effects in complex fluids and interfacial science. We report here on a fluorescent surfactant that enables to monitor Marangoni flows under quasi-steady conditions, without the need of invasive tracers. The Marangoni zone is clearly visible, and its dynamics can be quantitatively probed both at the air-water interface and within the bulk. In particular, we show that the Marangoni zone exhibits unexpected dependencies with the container size and water depth with the pyrene-tailed surfactant. Additionally, recirculation flows are evidenced by fluorescence near the bottom of the container. This fluorescent probe may find other useful applications in deciphering the complexity of the ubiquitous Marangoni effect.

Extraction of La(iii), Eu(iii) and Fe(iii) was compared in n-dodecane and two ionic liquids (ILs) (1-ethyl-1-butylpiperidinium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [EBPip+] [NTf2 -] and 1-ethyl-1-octylpiperidinium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [EOPip+] [NTf2 -]). Using the extractant N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dioctylhexylethoxymalonamide (DMDOHEMA), the effect of pH was investigated in detail to recover extraction mechanisms. The use of ILs as the organic solvent instead of n-dodecane, greatly enhances extraction efficiency, and an ionic liquid with a shorter alkyl chain [EBPip+] [NTf2 -] provides higher extraction than [EOPip+] [NTf2 -]. The mechanistic study points out that for low nitric acid concentrations ([HNO3] ≤ 0.01 M), metal is extracted via a cation of the ionic liquids, while for higher nitric acid concentrations ([HNO3] ≥ 1.0 M), extraction occurs through pure solvation mechanism of DMDOHEMA as in conventional diluents. This latter case is of high interest for applications, as higher extraction can be obtained without any loss of ILs by ion exchange mechanisms.

The lyotropic behavior of the ternary system formed by 1-tetradecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, 1-decanol, and water is investigated. A lamellar mesophase is formed for a wide range of compositions and is characterized by polarized optical microscopy, low-temperature scanning electron microscopy, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering with synchrotron radiation, and differential scanning calorimetry. This phase presents onionlike structures. Two lamellar structures are formed: an Lα mesophase between 25 and 50 °C, with an isobaric thermal expansivity of the bilayer thickness of -3.2 × 10-3 K-1, and a lamellar gel phase, when the temperature decreases below 25 °C. This new medium is employed to perform in situ X-ray-initiated polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide. When the monomer is incorporated in the lamellar structure, it is distributed between the water layer and bilayer interface and its polymerization can be followed by variations in the diffractograms with time.
