Over the past decade, food safety has become a major concern due to the intensive use of pesticides. Pesticide contamination has been observed in poultry products when seeds are coated with pesticides or when stored products are exposed to pesticides in warehouses. In this experiment, the residue levels of malathion transferred from corn grain to the different parts of the chicken product, its transfer factors (TFs) and the human dietary risk for consumers were evaluated. Growth performance and carcass parameters of the chicken samples were also determined after different doses of malathion exposure. Malathion residues from different parts of chicken meat (breast, thigh, wing, liver and skin) were extracted by the QuEChERS method and analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrophotometry (LC-MS/MS). A deterministic approach was used to calculate the acute and chronic risk assessment. Body weight, feed conversion ratio and feed intake decreased with increasing malathion dose. In addition to reduced feed intake, cold carcass and liver weights of the chicks were also decreased. The highest residues were found in the skin of the chicken followed by the breast, thigh, wing and liver. The TFs of malathion varied between 0.00 and 0.05 according to the different doses applied (4 mg/kg, 8 mg/kg, 16 mg/kg, 32 mg/kg). The chronic exposure assessment (HQ) showed that consumers of all ages and genders consumed 0.008-0.604% of the acceptable daily intake (0.3 mg/kg body weight (bw)/day) of malathion from chicken products. The acute intake assessment (aHQ) of consumers ranged from 0.00015 to 0.0135% of the acute reference dose (0.3 mg/kg bw). In conclusion the results suggest that the risk associated with the malathion residues in chicken meat was found to be low but the residue levels in meat should not be ignored.

The use of deep learning (DL) techniques for automated diagnosis of large vessel occlusion (LVO) and collateral scoring on computed tomography angiography (CTA) is gaining attention. In this study, a state-of-the-art self-configuring object detection network called nnDetection was used to detect LVO and assess collateralization on CTA scans using a multi-task 3D object detection approach. The model was trained on single-phase CTA scans of 2425 patients at five centers, and its performance was evaluated on an external test set of 345 patients from another center. Ground-truth labels for the presence of LVO and collateral scores were provided by three radiologists. The nnDetection model achieved a diagnostic accuracy of 98.26% (95% CI 96.25-99.36%) in identifying LVO, correctly classifying 339 out of 345 CTA scans in the external test set. The DL-based collateral scores had a kappa of 0.80, indicating good agreement with the consensus of the radiologists. These results demonstrate that the self-configuring 3D nnDetection model can accurately detect LVO on single-phase CTA scans and provide semi-quantitative collateral scores, offering a comprehensive approach for automated stroke diagnostics in patients with LVO.

BACKGROUND: Flow diverter (FD) devices provide a safe and effective treatment option especially for wide-necked intracranial aneurysms. One of the main concerns in patients treated with FD devices is patency of arterial branches jailed by the stent. However, there are no long-term data from magnetic resonance perfusion (MRP) studies regarding jailed branches. In this study we aimed to reveal the MRP findings in patients with jailed middle cerebral artery (MCA) cortical branches during long-term follow-up after flow diversion. METHODS: Patients who underwent FD stent treatment for MCA aneurysms with a resulting jailed cortical branch were included. Follow-up clinical, angiographic, and MRP examination findings were recorded. Different MRP parameters were measured in the MCA territory regarding the jailed branches. RESULTS: Eighteen patients treated endovascularly with flow diversion for a total of 20 MCA aneurysms were included. At angiographic follow-up (median 35 months, range 7-95 months) complete occlusion was observed in 13 (65%) aneurysms and partial occlusion was observed in 6 (30%). The mean transit time (MTT) prolongation, MTT ratio, time-to peak (TTP) prolongation, and TTP ratio were 1.34, 1.20, 1.18, and 1.06 s, respectively, when compared with the contralateral side in the MCA territory. MTT, TTP, and cerebral blood volume values of the patients showed statistically significant differences compared with the contralateral side (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Flow diversion treatment of complex bifurcation aneurysms can be effective and safe. MRP examination may reveal perfusion changes in the territory vascularized via a jailed branch, and these changes are rarely accompanied by clinical findings.

To investigate the performance of a joint convolutional neural networks-recurrent neural networks (CNN-RNN) using an attention mechanism in identifying and classifying intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) on a large multi-center dataset; to test its performance in a prospective independent sample consisting of consecutive real-world patients. All consecutive patients who underwent emergency non-contrast-enhanced head CT in five different centers were retrospectively gathered. Five neuroradiologists created the ground-truth labels. The development dataset was divided into the training and validation set. After the development phase, we integrated the deep learning model into an independent center's PACS environment for over six months for assessing the performance in a real clinical setting. Three radiologists created the ground-truth labels of the testing set with a majority voting. A total of 55,179 head CT scans of 48,070 patients, 28,253 men (58.77%), with a mean age of 53.84 ± 17.64 years (range 18-89) were enrolled in the study. The validation sample comprised 5211 head CT scans, with 991 being annotated as ICH-positive. The model's binary accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity on the validation set were 99.41%, 99.70%, and 98.91, respectively. During the prospective implementation, the model yielded an accuracy of 96.02% on 452 head CT scans with an average prediction time of 45 ± 8 s. The joint CNN-RNN model with an attention mechanism yielded excellent diagnostic accuracy in assessing ICH and its subtypes on a large-scale sample. The model was seamlessly integrated into the radiology workflow. Though slightly decreased performance, it provided decisions on the sample of consecutive real-world patients within a minute.

There is little evidence on the applicability of deep learning (DL) in the segmentation of acute ischemic lesions on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners of different manufacturers. We retrospectively included DWI data of patients with acute ischemic lesions from six centers. Dataset A (n = 2986) and B (n = 3951) included data from Siemens and GE MRI scanners, respectively. The datasets were split into the training (80%), validation (10%), and internal test (10%) sets, and six neuroradiologists created ground-truth masks. Models A and B were the proposed neural networks trained on datasets A and B. The models subsequently fine-tuned across the datasets using their validation data. Another radiologist performed the segmentation on the test sets for comparisons. The median Dice scores of models A and B were 0.858 and 0.857 for the internal tests, which were non-inferior to the radiologist's performance, but demonstrated lower performance than the radiologist on the external tests. Fine-tuned models A and B achieved median Dice scores of 0.832 and 0.846, which were non-inferior to the radiologist's performance on the external tests. The present work shows that the inter-vendor operability of deep learning for the segmentation of ischemic lesions on DWI might be enhanced via transfer learning; thereby, their clinical applicability and generalizability could be improved.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the postoperative dynamics of the nasal soft-tissue envelope (NSTE) is necessary to obtain the desired cosmetic results after rhinoplasty. This study was conducted to determine the changes of NSTE thickness and its effects on periorbital edema and ecchymosis following rhinoplasty. METHODS: Thirty-five patients who underwent rhinoplasty were included in the study. Nasal skin and subcutaneous tissue thickness at the tip, supratip, rhinion, and nasion were measured using ultrasonography preoperatively and at the postoperative 3rd and 10th months. Periorbital edema and ecchymosis were evaluated at postoperative days 1, 3, and 7. The patients were categorized as the thick NSTE group (n = 17) and the thin NSTE group (n = 18) according to the preoperative median NSTE thickness. RESULTS: In the thin NSTE group, supratip skin, subcutaneous tissue, and total NSTE thickness were lowest on the preoperative day but no statistically significant difference was found for the thick NSTE group. In the thin NSTE group, total NSTE thickness of the rhinion was highest at the postoperative 3rd month, but in the thick NSTE group, there was no statistically significant difference between postoperative 3rd and 10th months. In both groups, total NSTE thickness of the nasion was highest at the postoperative 3rd month and lowest at the postoperative 10th month. CONCLUSIONS: Supratip fullness occurs more prominent in patients with thin NSTE. Postoperative edema in the rhinion is greater in patients with thin NSTE for the early postoperative period but it lasts longer in patients with thick NSTE. Soft-tissue envelope atrophy at the nasion occurs in both groups in the late postoperative period. Periorbital edema and ecchymosis severity are not affected by NSTE thickness.

In this study, 600 1-day-old Japanese quail chicks (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were used to investigate the effects of bacteriocin and organic acids on performance and intestinal histomorphology and microbiology. Chicks were allocated to 6 groups, i.e., control, Bac150 (150 mg/kg bacteriocin), Bac300 (300 mg/kg bacteriocin), OA (3 g/kg organic acid blend), Bac150+OA (150 mg/kg bacteriocin + 3 g/kg organic acid blend), and Bac300+OA (300 mg/kg bacteriocin + 3 g/kg organic acid blend) group. The trial lasted 35 days. At the end of the trial, a statistical increase was not observed in the performance parameters of chicks with feed additives. However, 300 mg/kg bacteriocin + 3 g/kg organic acid supplementation given together has been found to have more positive effects on intestinal microbiology and histomorphology (P < 0.05). Consequently, it is understood that the use of these feed additives together will achieve better results.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated inclusion of buckwheat silage to the diet of growing lambs in terms of meat quality as compared to maize silage. METHODS: Buckwheat, rich in total phenols (TP, 33 g/kg dry matter [DM]), was harvested at the end of the milk stage and ensiled in 40 kg plastic bags after wilting (294 g/kg silage DM). A total of 18 growing lambs (21.6±1.2) were individually fed isonitrogenous and isoenergetic total mixed rations (TMR) for 75 d that either contained buckwheat or maize silage at DM proportions of 0.50. At the end of feeding trail all lambs were slaughtered to assess carcass characteristics and meat quality. RESULTS: Buckwheat silage increased (p<0.01) the DM intake of lambs as compared to maize silage, but had no effects (p>0.05) on live weight gain and feed efficiency. Carcass weight, dressing percentage, meat pH, water holding capacity, cooking loss, shear force (kg/cm2), and total viable bacteria count of meat did not differ (p>0.05) between the treatments. However, TP content of meat increased (p<0.001) by feeding buckwheat TMR. Feeding buckwheat TMR also decreased (p<0.05) the b* values of meat. CONCLUSION: The results provide that buckwheat silage is palatable and could successfully include TMR of growing lambs with no adverse effects on performance, carcass and meat quality. Additionally, feeding buckwheat silage to lambs offers increased TP in meat.
