RESUMO

PURPOSE: The ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury seen in the heart can cause severe damage to essential organs such as the brain. Cannabidiol (CBD) obtained from Cannabis sativa is used today to treat various diseases. This study aimed to demonstrate CBD's neuroprotective and therapeutic properties in rats with brain damage caused by I/R in the heart. MATERIALS: Rats were divided into four groups; sham, I/R, I/R + Prophylactic CBD, and I/R + Therapeutic CBD. End of the experiment, brain tissues were collected for biochemical, histopathological, and genetic examinations. RESULTS: I/R damage increased the number of degenerative neurons, caspase-3 and TNF-α immunoexpression, total oxidant status levels, and oxidative stress index. Both prophylactic and therapeutic CBD administration reduced these increased values. In addition, the relative fold changes of AMPK, PGC-1α, SIRT1, and Bcl 2 decreased in the I/R group, and the relative fold change of Bax increased, which are indicators of ER stress and apoptosis. Both administrations of CBD reversed these genes' relative fold changes. CONCLUSION: CBD can be protective against brain injury caused by cardiac I/R damage through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic mechanisms.

RESUMO

This study aimed at systematically analyzing and evaluating the impact of perioperative blood transfusions (PBT) on oncologic outcomes of patients undergoing radical cystectomy for bladder cancer. This systematic review follows the recommendations of the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews and Interventions and was conducted in line with the PRISMA statement and the AMSTAR II criteria. A comprehensive database search was performed based on the PICO criteria. Two independent reviewers performed all screening steps and quality assessment. Risk of bias and certainty in evidence were assessed with the Newcastle Ottawa Scale for non-randomized trials and the GRADE approach. Of 1123 identified studies 20 were eligible for qualitative analysis and 15 for quantitative analysis reporting on 21,915 patients. Receiving a PBT was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio (HR) [95% confidence interval (CI)]: 1.29 [1.18, 1.40]; p < 0.001), cancer-specific mortality (HR [CI]: 1.27 [1.15; 1.41]; p < 0.001) and disease recurrence (HR [CI]: 1.22 [1.12; 1.34]; p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis of transfusion timing revealed a significantly increased risk of mortality with intraoperative or combined intra- and postoperative transfusions compared to postoperative transfusion only for all three outcomes (p < 0.001). Leukocyte-depletion was associated with increased all-cause mortality, but not cancer-specific mortality. The administration of PBT negatively impacts oncological outcomes after radical cystectomy. Therefore, careful treatment indication and strict adherence to transfusion guidelines is encouraged in order to avoid adverse effects during the perioperative course.

RESUMO

The size of brain ventricles is especially relevant in some brain diseases such as epilepsy, schizophrenia and other neurodegenerative diseases. Many studies have been conducted to assess the brain ventricles. To the best of our knowledge, however, there is no fourth, third and lateral ventricles volume study evaluating the efficiency and accuracy of point-counting and planimetry methods of the Cavalieri principle in the literature. In the current study, we estimated the volume of intracerebral ventricles in normal subjects using stereological methods. The volumes of fourth, third and lateral ventricle were estimated in 14 young Turkish volunteers (7 males and 7 females), aged between 18 and 36 years and free of any neurological symptoms and signs, using serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Volumes of intracerebral ventricles were determined on MRIs using the point-counting and planimetry methods. The mean results of the point-counting method were 14.7 +/- 4.2, 8.7 +/- 3.0 and 131.8 +/- 33.1 mm(3) for the fourth, third and lateral ventricles, respectively. The mean results of the planimetry method were 15.4 +/- 3.4, 8.6 +/- 3.5 and 153.7 +/- 34.6 mm(3) for the fourth, third and lateral ventricles, respectively. Ventricle volumes obtained by the two different methods were not statistically different (p > 0.05) and they correlated well with each other. Good agreement was found between results obtained with the point-counting and planimetry techniques. The findings of the present study using stereological methods could provide data for the evaluation of normal and pathological volumes of intracerebral ventricles.

RESUMO

Multiple carcinomas of the genital system are rare in the literature. We report a 43-year-old female patient who presented with 3 different synchronous primary genital system malignancies (cervix, endometrium and ovary). After Wertheim's hysterectomy there was a 4 x 2 cm residual mass for which systemic chemotherapy and radiotherapy were administered. The patient rapidly deteriorated and died due to disease progression. Registration of cases with multiple tumors in a single centre using a standardized investigation for predisposing parameters may contribute much to the management of such conditions.

RESUMO

The objective of this study is to review the implantation of malignant cells of cervical cancer in an episiotomy site. This is the second case of cervical cancer with concomitant episiotomy metastasis in the literature. The treatment consisted of radiochemotherapy. There was no confirmed recurrent disease after 1 year of follow-up in our reported case. In conclusion, pregnancy appears to be a chance for cervical cancer screening as a part of prenatal care. If cervical cancer is diagnosed in a woman after vaginal delivery, she must be examined carefully including the episiotomy site.

RESUMO

Changes in serum ovarian hormone and gonadotrophine levels and ovarian artery blood flow rate by Doppler ultrasonography following laparoscopic tubal sterilization were evaluated. Forty-seven cases of laparoscopic tubal sterilization by electrocoagulation were included in the study. Forty-two women who used nonhormonal contraceptive methods were randomized as a control group. Serum concentrations of estradiol, FSH, LH, progesterone and bilateral ovarian artery pulsatility indexes were measured at baseline and at three, six and 12 months. In the study group, the mean value of midluteal progesterone was significantly decreased three months postoperatively 3. and bilateral ovarian artery pulsatility indexes were increased three and six months postoperatively, compared to their preoperative values. However, there was no statistical difference between bilateral ovarian PI values calculated preoperatively and at 12 months. Laparoscopic tubal ligation by electrocoagulation may temporarily cause reduced bilateral ovarian artery flow and corpus luteum dysfunction proven by low mid-luteal progesterone levels.

RESUMO

The protonation constants of ten Schiff's bases synthesized by the condensation of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde with aniline and o-, m-, and p-substituted methylanilines, ethylanilines and methoxyanilines in various dioxan-water mixtures have been determined potentiometrically using an electrode system calibrated in concentration units of the hydrogen ion. The influence of substituents in the molecular structure on the protonation constants is discussed. The log K(2) values relating to the protonation of imine nitrogen atoms are in accordance with the Hammett relationship for all solvent compositions. A reverse relationship is observed between log K(2) for all Schiff's bases and the mole fraction of dioxan. However, the log K(1) values corresponding to the protonation of naphtholate O-ions have been found to increase with the increase in concentration of dioxan. Both electrostatic and non-electrostatic contributions influencing these constants are briefly discussed.

RESUMO

Thirty-nine children (14 girls and 25 boys) were compared for sex differences in the severity of the hyperactive syndrome. A more severe form of the disorder in hyperactive girls suggested by the sex-related multiple threshold model of inheritance could not be shown. The severity of the disorder is considered to be the result of symptom severity combined with the effect on everyday life. The rating instruments used were the Conners Rating Scale and the Steinhausen Global Assessment Scale for Children and Adolescents. No significant differences were found for the symptoms impulsivity, inattention, and overactivity as assessed with the Yale Children's Inventory. However, the boys tended to be even more impulsive than the girls. The results were controlled for age, adverse family and social circumstances and gender-oriented expectations.
