RESUMO

We present a carrier-envelope offset (CEO) stable ytterbium-doped fiber chirped-pulse amplification system employing the technology of coherent beam combining and delivering more than 1 kW of average power at a pulse repetition rate of 80 MHz. The CEO stability of the system is 220 mrad rms, characterized out-of-loop with an f-to-2f interferometer in a frequency offset range of 10 Hz to 20 MHz. The high-power amplification system boosts the average power of the CEO stable oscillator by five orders of magnitude while increasing the phase noise by only 100 mrad. No evidence of CEO noise deterioration due to coherent beam combining is found. Low-frequency CEO fluctuations at the chirped-pulse amplifier are suppressed by a "slow loop" feedback. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a coherently combined laser system delivering an outstanding average power and high CEO stability at the same time.

RESUMO

We compare the amplification of various modes in large mode area fibers when the pump is coupled into the fundamental core mode versus the standard cladding-pump scheme. Our simulations show that pumping in the LP(01) core mode results in differential gain for the fundamental signal mode which suppresses the higher order modes and amplified spontaneous emission compared to the cladding pump scheme. This differential gain effect is predicted to increase with core size and may provide a path to scale fiber mode area to several thousand square micron.

RESUMO

Numerical simulations on different kinds of realistic photonic bandgap fibers exhibiting reversed dispersion slope for the propagating fundamental mode are reported. We show that reversed or flat dispersion functions in a wide wavelength range using hollow-core, air-silica photonic bandgap fibers and solid core Bragg fibers with step-index profile can be obtained by introducing resonant structures in the fiber cladding. We evaluate the dispersion and confinement loss profiles of these fibers from the Helmholtz eigenvalue equation and the calculated fiber properties are used to investigate the propagation of chirped femtosecond pulses through serially connected hollow core fiber compressors.

RESUMO

We propose one-dimensional photonic bandgap (PB) dielectric structures to be used at grazing incidence in order to obtain an extended bandgap exhibiting considerably reduced reflection loss and dispersion compared to similar structures used at a normal incidence of light. The well-known quarter-wave condition is applied for the design in this specific case, resulting in resonance-free reflection bands without drops in reflection versus wavelength function and a monotonous variation of the group delay dispersion versus wavelength function, which are important issues in femtosecond pulse laser applications. Based on these results we extend our studies to two-dimensional PB structures and provide guidelines to the design of leaking mode-free hollow-core Bragg PB fibers providing anomalous dispersion over most of the bandgap.

RESUMO

Higher-order-mode solid and hollow core photonic bandgap fibers exhibiting reversed or zero dispersion slope over tens or hundreds of nanometer bandwidths within the bandgap are presented. This attractive feature makes them well suited for broadband dispersion control in femtosecond pulse fiber lasers, amplifiers and optical parametric oscillators. The canonical form of the dispersion profile in photonic bandgap fibers is modified by a partial reflector layer/interface placed around the core forming a 2D cylindrical Gires-Tournois type interferometer. This small perturbation in the index profile induces a frequency dependent electric field distribution of the preferred propagating higher-order-mode resulting in a zero or reversed dispersion slope.

RESUMO

Robust fundamental mode propagation and amplification of picosecond pulses at 1.56 microm wavelength is demonstrated in a core-pumped Er fiber with 1170 microm2 effective area. Record peak power exceeding 120 kW, and 67 nJ pulse energy are achieved before the onset of pulse breakup. A small increase in input pulse energy results in a temporal collapse of the pulse center to 58 fs duration, with peak powers approaching 200 kW.

RESUMO

Picosecond pulses at 1.56 micro mm wavelength are directly amplified with a diffraction limited beam quality in a core-pumped Er fiber with an 875 micro m(2) effective area. The interplay between nonlinear spectral broadening and anomalous fiber dispersion compresses the input pulse duration during amplification so that 42 nJ energy pulses with approximately 65 kW peak power are achieved without pulse break-up.
