RESUMO

En el presente trabajo se analizan algunos cambios producidos en las propiedades de un suelo sometido a impacto térmico. Para llevar a cabo este estudio se utiliza una técnica electrocinética basada en los mismos principios que la electrorremediación. El análisis se enfoca en la variación, durante el tratamiento, de la corriente de electrólisis y de la diferencia de potencial generada en el interior del suelo en una región cercana a la cámara de los electrodos. Los resultados obtenidos se explican con base en las características iniciales que presentan los suelos estudiados antes del proceso electrocinético.


This paper discusses some changes in the characteristics of a soil subjected to thermal shock. The properties are analyzed using a electrokinetics technique derived from the electrorremediacion. The analysis focuses on the variation of the electrolysis current, and the potential difference generated within a region near the electrodes chamber during the treatment. The results are explained in relation to the change of some properties of the soil samples subjected to thermal treatment before the electrokinetic process.


No presente trabalho foram analisadas algumas propriedades de um solo submetido a tratamento térmico. Para realizar este estudo, utilizou-se uma técnica eletrocinética baseada nos princípios da eletroremediação. A base da análise é a variação, durante o tratamento, da corrente de eletrólise e da diferença de potencial gerada no interior da amostra, numa região próxima aos compartimentos dos eletrodos. Os resultados obtidos são explicados de acordo com as características iniciais dos solos estudados antes do processo eletrocinético.

An experimental design methodology was applied to evaluate the decolourization of crystal violet (CV) dye by electrocoagulation using iron or aluminium electrodes. The effects and interactions of four parameters, initial pH (3-9), current density (6-28 A m(-2)), substrate concentration (50-200 mg L(-1)) and supporting electrolyte concentration (284-1420 mg L(-1) of Na(2)SO(4)), were optimized and evaluated. Although the results using iron anodes were better than for aluminium, the effects and interactions of the studied parameters were quite similar. With a confidence level of 95%, initial pH and supporting electrolyte concentration showed limited effects on the removal rate of CV, whereas current density, pollutant concentration and the interaction of both were significant. Reduced models taking into account significant variables and interactions between variables have shown good correlations with the experimental results. Under optimal conditions, almost complete removal of CV and chemical oxygen demand were obtained after electrocoagulation for 5 and 30 min, using iron and aluminium electrodes, respectively. These results indicate that electrocoagulation with iron anodes is a rapid, economical and effective alternative to the complete removal of CV in waters. Evolutions of pH and residual iron or aluminium concentrations in solution are also discussed.

Among methods which involve the flow of electric current, the electro-remediation techniques have shown useful both for the removal of polluting species, and for obtaining a series of parameters in relatively laboratory simple experiments which can be used to characterize soils. This technique was applied in the present study to obtain experimental results with two soils from Tenerife. The capacity of the method as methodology for the measurement of the buffering capacity of these soils during electrokinetic experiments was analyzed. The results obtained on electrokinetic determination of buffer capacity correlated quite well with behaviour observed in the pH curves. The technique was promising for soil description primarily because important information could be obtained in shorter time periods than those required when using routine laboratory methods of soil analysis.
