RESUMO

By employing the optical Kerr gate technique at 800 nm with 180 fs pulses at 76 MHz, we evaluated the third-order nonlinear optical response of two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting MoS2, semimetallic ZrTe2, and metallic NbS2 and NbSe2. The modulus of the nonlinear refractive index was measured to range from 8.6 × 10-19 m2/W to 5.3 × 10-18 m2/W, with all materials' response time limited by the pulse duration. The physical mechanism to explain the ultrafast response time's origin considers the nature of the 2D material, as will be discussed.

RESUMO

Investigators have reported reduced visibility of the cone photoreceptors overlying drusen using adaptive optics (AO) imaging techniques. Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain this phenomenon. First, the disease-related deformation of the photoreceptor outer segment (OS) may reduce its ability to act as a wave guide, thus decreasing the cell's familiar reflectance pattern. Second, drusen could disorient the photoreceptors away from the eye's pupil, reducing the amount of light reflected back out the pupil. In this work, we use directional OCT (dOCT) images of drusen in AMD patients to measure the respective contributions of these deforming and disorienting factors.

RESUMO

Full-field swept-source optical coherence tomography (FF-SS-OCT) is an emerging technology with potential applications in ophthalmic imaging, microscopy, metrology, and other domains. Here we demonstrate a novel method of multiplexing FF-SS-OCT signals using carrier modulation (CM). The principle of CM could be used to inspect various properties of the scattered light, e.g. its spectrum, polarization, Doppler shift, or distribution in the pupil. The last of these will be explored in this work, where CM was used to acquire images passing through two different optical pupils. The two pupils contained semicircular optical windows with perpendicular orientations, with each window permitting measurement of scattering anisotropy in one dimension by inducing an optical delay between the images formed by the two halves of the pupil. Together, the two forms of multiplexing permit measurement of differential scattering anisotropy in the x and y dimensions simultaneously. To demonstrate the feasibility of this technique our carrier multiplexed directional FF-OCT (CM-D-FF-OCT) system was used to acquire images of a microlens array, human hair, onion skin and in vivo human retina. The results of these studies are presented and briefly discussed in the context of future development and application of this technique.

RESUMO

A retinal imaging system was designed for full-field (FF) swept-source (SS) optical coherence tomography (OCT) with cellular resolution. The system incorporates a real-time adaptive optics (AO) subsystem and a very high-speed CMOS sensor, and is capable of acquiring volumetric images of the retina at rates up to 1 kHz. While digital aberration correction (DAC) is an attractive potential alternative to AO, it has not yet been shown to provide resolution allowing visualization of cones in the fovea, where early detection of functional deficits is most critical. Here we demonstrate that FF-SS-OCT with hardware AO permits resolution of foveal cones, imaged at eccentricities of 1° and 2°, with volume rates adequate to measure light-evoked changes in photoreceptors. With the reference arm blocked, the system can operate as a kilohertz AO flood illumination fundus camera with adjustable temporal coherence and is expected to allow measurement of light-evoked changes caused by common path interference in photoreceptor outer segments (OS). In this paper, we describe the system's optical design, characterize its performance, and demonstrate its ability to produce images of the human photoreceptor mosaic.

RESUMO

Noninvasive, objective measurement of rod function is as significant as that of cone function, and for retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration, rod function may be a more sensitive biomarker of disease progression and efficacy of treatment than cone function. Functional imaging of single human rod photoreceptors, however, has proven difficult because their small size and rapid functional response pose challenges for the resolution and speed of the imaging system. Here, we describe light-evoked, functional responses of human rods and cones, measured noninvasively using a synchronized adaptive optics optical coherence tomography (OCT) and scanning light ophthalmoscopy (SLO) system. The higher lateral resolution of the SLO images made it possible to confirm the identity of rods in the corresponding OCT volumes.

RESUMO

Z-scan is a well-established technique used to measure the nonlinear refractive index and absorption coefficient of thin and transparent materials. The method requires the displacement of the sample along the focus of a laser beam. Therefore, the Z-scan is not suitable for experiments where the sample cannot be axially translated. Here, we explore a deformable mirror to create controllable defocus aberrations, translating the focus of the beam through the sample, alternatively to the sample displacement. The technique is based on time behavior analysis of the light beam transmitted by the nonlinear sample, at different defocus configurations. The method is validated by measuring reference samples (CS2 and SiO2) and comparing them with the conventional Z-scan technique.

RESUMO

An adaptive optics fundus camera has been developed that uses simultaneous capture of multiple images via adjacent pupil sectors to provide directional sensitivity. In the chosen realization, a shallow refractive pyramid prism is used to subdivide backscattered light from the retina into four solid angles. Parafoveal fundus images have been captured for the eyes of three healthy subjects and directional scattering has been determined using horizontal and vertical differentials. The results for the photoreceptor cones, blood vessels, and the optic disc are discussed. In the case of cones, the observations are compared with numerical simulations based on a simplistic light-scattering model. Ultimately, the method may have diagnostic potential for diseases that perturb the microscopic structure of the retina.

RESUMO

The integrated Stiles-Crawford function is commonly used as apodization model for vision through the natural eye pupil. However, this method does not account for possible effects related to the retinal thickness, the large length-to-diameter aspect ratio of the photoreceptors, or the use of nonMaxwellian illumination. Here, we introduce a geometrical optics model to calculate the fraction of overlap between light at the retina and the photoreceptor outer segments where absorption triggers vision. The model, which does not account for photoreceptor waveguiding, is discussed for both Maxwellian and nonMaxwellian illumination. The integrated Stiles-Crawford effect is analyzed experimentally with a uniaxial pupil-size flicker methodology and we find that the psychophysical measurements match better to the geometrical optics predictions than direct integration of a Stiles-Crawford function.

RESUMO

Cone photoreceptors have a narrow acceptance angle that is well matched to the size of the eye pupil and dampens the visual impact of aberrations and scattering. However, the structure of the human retina is not replicated in existing eye models used to test refractive designs or retinal implants that restore partial vision to the blind. Here, we report on an artificial waveguide-based retinal phantom manufactured by photolithography in photoresist film with dimensions and refractive index contrast similar to the retinal receptor layer. The optical performance of the waveguide array is analyzed in terms of angular coupling efficiency, and it is experimentally verified that the structure leads to improved resolution and contrast of optical images transmitted through the layer when defocus is present.

RESUMO

A novel wavefront sensor based on a microstructural array of waveguides is proposed. The method is based on the sensitivity in light-coupling efficiency to the wavefront gradient present at the entrance aperture of each waveguide in an array, and hence the amount of incident light that couples is influenced by wavefront aberrations. The concept is illustrated with wavefront measurements that have been performed using a liquid-filled photonic crystal fiber (LF-PCF) working as a coherent fiber bundle. The pros and cons of the LF-PCF based sensor are discussed.
