Ethnic attitudes in relation to ethnic pride and ethnic differentiation.

A comparison of 4 subsamples with the Ethnic Identity Scale (developed for the present study) yielded 2 relatively independent facets of ethnic identity: ethnic pride and belonging (EP) and ethnic differentiation (ED). First, the distinction between EP and ED increased understanding of how age and immigration status affect changes in ethnic identity. In a comparison of Estonians living in Sweden with those living in Estonia, only ED was affected by emigration and contacts with other ethnic groups, although both EP and ED were positively correlated with age. Second, the distinction between EP and ED increased understanding of earlier and seemingly contradictory findings about the connection between ethnic identity and ethnic attitudes. In the present study, EP was not correlated with ethnic attitudes, but, for 2 majority groups, ED was positively correlated with negative evaluations of out-groups. The authors also discuss the role of group status and relationships with the target nation in understanding the relationship between ethnic identity and ethnic attitudes.

Cytochrome P-450 metabolic-intermediate complex formation with a series of diphenhydramine analogues.

A series of diphenhydramine analogues have been studied with regard to their formation of a metabolic intermediate (MI) during their biotransformation in phenobarbital induced rat hepatic microsomes. The MI forms a complex with reduced cytochrome P-450. MI complexation of cytochrome P-450 may result in drug-drug interactions and/or in cumulation of the parent compound. The extent of MI complex formation could be correlated with the lipophilicity of the substrates in a parabolic manner. A hydrophobic pocket of limited dimensions in cytochrome P-450 for the N-alkyl substituent of the substrates can be assumed. Moreover our data indicate a role for the O-atom in the diphenhydramine analogues for the interaction with cytochrome P-450.

Fetal mouth movements during behavioural states 1F and 2F.

The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of mouth movements during behavioural states 1F (quiet sleep) and 2F (active sleep) in the near term human fetus. Thirty-six women participated. Fetal heart rate and fetal movements were recorded for 2 hours continuously. Videotapes with enclosed periods 1F and 2F were replayed to record fetal mouth movements in detail. During 1F, regular mouthing movements dominated (present in 74%), while jaw opening, yawn and grimace were only observed in 5 to 16% of the recordings. Tongue protrusion was not observed in 1F. In all 2F periods jaw opening was present (100%), while tongue protrusion, yawn and grimace were also frequently observed. Regular mouthing was observed in 2F in only two fetuses. For regular mouthing and sucking, onset-to-onset intervals of clusters, cluster duration, and number and frequency of movements within clusters were calculated. In all aspects the differences between these two types of movement were statistically significant. Within the clusters of regular mouthing a decline in the mouthing frequency was found. The data on fetal regular mouthing correspond with observations in the neonate.

Fully automated sample handling system for liquid chromatography based on pre-column technology and automated cartridge exchange.

The design of an automated cartridge exchange module for on-line sample handling in liquid chromatography is described. When combined with a low-cost purge pump, a solvent selection valve and an auto-sampler, a fully automated sample handling system is obtained. Samples are sorbed on a disposable cartridge packed with 40 micron octyl-bonded silica, purged for clean-up and eluted on-line to the analytical column. Unattended operation of the system is demonstrated for various examples, i.e., the determination of anti-epileptic drugs in serum, an anti-cancer drug in plasma, barbiturates in urine, phenylurea herbicides in river water and caffeine in a soft drink.

Massive arterial air embolism due to rupture of pulsatile assist device: successful treatment in the hyperbaric chamber.

We present the case of a patient who had rupture of a pulsatile assist device (PAD) accompanied by massive air embolism, and the treatment that brought it to a successful outcome. After rupture of the skin of the PAD balloon, a massive amount of air was injected into the ascending aorta. The patient was placed in Trendelenburg position and cooled in deep hypothermia with cardiopulmonary bypass. He was given 1 gm of methylprednisolone intravenously, and the aortic valve replacement and double vein bypass graft were performed. After completion of the operation, the patient was partially rewarmed to 30 degrees C central temperature and transported by ambulance to a hyperbaric chamber where he was compressed to 6 atmospheres absolute 9 hours after the accident with clinical signs of severe brain dysfunction. The patient recovered completely and was discharged from the hospital on the tenth postoperative day.
