Four patients with primary amenorrhoea associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome were investigated clinically, radiologically, endocrinologically and histologically. The values of FSH and LH were determined in basal conditions, as well as after 100 micrograms of LHRH. The levels of TSH and prolactin were studied before and after TRH stimulation in doses of 200 micrograms. An increase in the basal levels of FSH was established with different responses of the hormone to the LHRH test in the four patients. The values of LH were in the upper normal limits, and the responses of the hormone to the LHRH test were similar to those defined for FSH. The basal levels and the response of TSH and prolactin to TRH were within the norm, with the exception of the first patients, in whom the response of prolactin to TRH stimulation was significantly diminished. The authors discuss the pathogenesis of the disease in connection with the data obtained.

A case of hilus-cell tumour of the ovary, associated with polycystic ovarian disease is reported. The authors discuss the data from hormonal investigations, the morphological picture and the genesis of the tumour.

We studied basal plasma FSH, LH, testosterone and oestradiol levels and post-OHRH plasma FSH and LH levels in ten patients both before and after a wedge resection of the ovaries for Stein-Leventhal syndrone. We compared the results with those obtained in 15 healthy patients between the third and seventh day of a normal menstrual cycle. Before operation, patients with the Stein-Leventhal syndrome had raised basal and post-LHRH LH levels and raised plasma testosterone levels. All these abnormalities disappeared after wedge resection of the ovaries. Both before and after operation patients with the Stein-Leventhal syndrome had low plasma oestradiol levels. These results are used to formulate a hypothesis about the aetiology of the Stein-Leventhal syndrome.

Synthetic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) was administered intravenously to 50 women with Stein-Leventhal syndrome and to 15 women with normal menstrual cycle. The patients with Stein-Leventhal syndrome were divided into two groups on the basis of the macroscopic characteristics of the ovaries: group I-with enlarged ovaries--and group II--with normal or diminished ovaries. The basal levels of FSH and LH in group I were greater as compared with those of group II. The maximal increase of both gonadotropins after a LH-RH stimulation was also greater in group I women. On the basis of the results obtained, the elevated basal levels and gonadotropin response to LH-RH test may be used in the differential diagnosis between the two forms of the disease.

The olfactory, auditory, and gustatory functions of 20 women with gonadal dysgenesis were studied. Various abnormalities of these functions were found, and they occurred principally in patients with mosaicism of the sex chromosomes. This is further evidence of the increased likelihood of various somatic abnormalities among women with gonadal dysgenesis, and particularly among those who carry more than one line of sex chromosomes.
