RESUMO

The degradation of biopolymers such as polylactic acid (PLA) has been studied for several years; however, the results regarding the mechanism of degradation are not completely understood yet. PLA is easily processed by traditional techniques including injection molding, blow molding, extrusion, and thermoforming; in this research, the extrusion and injection molding processes were used to produce PLA samples for accelerated destructive testing. The methodology employed consisted of carrying out material testing under the guidelines of several ASTM standards; this research hypothesized that the effects of UV light, humidity, and temperature exposure have a statistical difference in the PLA degradation rate. The multivariate analysis of non-parametric data is presented as an alternative to multivariate analysis, in which the data do not satisfy the essential assumptions of a regular MANOVA, such as multivariate normality. A package in the R software that allows the user to perform a non-parametric multivariate analysis when necessary was used. This paper presents a study to determine if there is a significant difference in the degradation rate after 2000 h of accelerated degradation of a biopolymer using the multivariate and non-parametric analyses of variance. The combination of the statistical techniques, multivariate analysis of variance and repeated measures, provided information for a better understanding of the degradation path of the biopolymer.

RESUMO

Wood plastic composites (WPCs) specimens containing high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and wood pruning waste were manufactured and evaluated for their mechanical properties. Pecan waste was used as an accessible and sustainable source in this study, and the effects of its particle size and concentration on WPC strengths were evaluated. Pecan waste was milled and sieved to various particle sizes, and testing samples were fabricated by mixing them in a twin-screw extruder and injection molding. A coupling agent was used to create a stable bond between the HDPE and wood. Both tensile modulus and strength were increased with an increasing pecan flour concentration up to about 60 weigh percent. A micromechanical model is proposed for predicting the mechanical properties of the wood flour/fiber reinforce composite. This model uses a correction factor of an elliptical of carried sizes and shapes. The preliminary results of the model have a high correlation with the experimental values of the composite in all mesh sizes.

RESUMO

While the degradation of Polylactic Acid (PLA) has been studied for several years, results regarding the mechanism for determining degradation are not completely understood. Through accelerated degradation testing, data can be extrapolated and modeled to test parameters such as temperature, voltage, time, and humidity. Accelerated lifetime testing is used as an alternative to experimentation under normal conditions. The methodology to create this model consisted of fabricating series of ASTM specimens using extrusion and injection molding. These specimens were tested through accelerated degradation; tensile and flexural testing were conducted at different points of time. Nonparametric inference tests for multivariate data are presented. The results indicate that the effect of the independent variable or treatment effect (time) is highly significant. This research intends to provide a better understanding of biopolymer degradation. The findings indicated that the proposed statistical models can be used as a tool for characterization of the material regarding the durability of the biopolymer as an engineering material. Having multiple models, one for each individual accelerating variable, allow deciding which parameter is critical in the characterization of the material.

RESUMO

In this report, highly crystalline and well-dispersed nano-sized nickel metal organic framework (MOFs) was decorated over graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) platforms to form hybrid nanocomposites. These as-synthesized hybrid nanocomposites were synthesized through a one-pot green solvothermal method. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, FT-IR, Raman and TGA techniques. XRD analysis revealed the crystalline structure of the hybrid nanocomposites. Morphological and elemental studies also verified successful decoration of nickel-benzene dicarboxylate (Ni-BDC) MOFs over GO and CNT platforms. Chemical analysis collected through IR, and thermal analysis collected through TGA technique, illustrated the presence of all the components in the hybrid nanomaterials. Methylene blue (MB) was used as a model organic pollutant to analyze the adsorption capacity of the prepared nanocomposites. According to the findings, a strong interaction exists between the MB molecule and the developed adsorbents at which due to the synergistic effect, the hybrid nanocomposites show several times higher adsorption capacity compared to that of parent materials. This improvement can be due to several reasons: high surface area of the MOFs in the composites resulting from the smaller size of MOFs, presence of the pores formed between the MOFs and the platforms and different morphological characteristic of Ni-BDC MOFs in hybrid nanocomposites, compared to bare Ni-BDC MOFs. Furthermore, the isotherm and kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption of MB onto the newly prepared adsorbents could best be explained by the Langmuir and Pseudo-second order kinetic models. A regeneration study demonstrated the highly stable nature of the hybrid nanocomposites.
