RESUMO

The evolution of a neutron-star r-mode driven unstable by gravitational radiation is studied here using numerical solutions of the full nonlinear fluid equations. The dimensionless amplitude of the mode grows to order unity before strong shocks develop which quickly damp the mode. In this simulation the star loses about 40% of its initial angular momentum and 50% of its rotational kinetic energy before the mode is damped. The nonlinear evolution causes the fluid to develop strong differential rotation which is concentrated near the surface and poles of the star.

RESUMO

For an inspiraling neutron-star-black-hole (NS-BH) binary, we estimate the gravity-wave frequency f(td) at the onset of NS tidal disruption. We model the NS as a tidally distorted, homogeneous, Newtonian ellipsoid on a circular, equatorial geodesic around a Kerr BH. We find that f(td) depends strongly on the NS radius R, and estimate that LIGO-II (ca. 2006-2008) might measure R to 15% precision at 140 Mpc ( approximately 1 event/yr under current estimates). This suggests that LIGO-II might extract valuable information about the NS equation of state from tidal-disruption waves.

RESUMO

To increase knowledge about the systematics and evolution of Mediterranean soles, we assessed mitochondrial DNA variation, molecular phylogeny, and evolution in eight species from the genera Solea, Microchirus, Monochirus, and Buglossidium by large ribosomal subunit (16S) and cytochrome b (cytb) sequence analysis. Relevant molecular features are the great variation of base composition among species at the third codon in cytb and the heterogeneity of the nucleotide substitution rate. Phylogenies recovered using 16S nucleotide and cytb amino acid sequences agree with those based on morphology in assessing monophyly of Solea species and ancestry of Buglossidium luteum, but they are against the intergeneric differentiation of Microchirus and Monochirus. Conversely, phylogenetic trees based on cytb nucleotide sequences yielded relationships among taxa regardless of their evolutionary histories. The incongruities between morphological and molecular issues suggest the need for reassessing the systematic value of some morphological characters. Approximate estimates of the divergence time of Mediterranean soleid lineages range from 40 to 13 Mya (Oligocene-Miocene), indicating an ancient origin for the group.

RESUMO

: The 5'-end of the mitochondrial control region of three Pleuronectiformes from the Adriatic Sea, Platichthys flesus italicus (Adriatic flounder), Solea vulgaris (common sole), and Solea kleini (Klein's sole), was sequenced and compared with that of six other flatfish species from the families Pleuronectidae and Bothidae. The sequence structures of all flatfishes appear very similar and consist of alternate short segments with low, medium, and high rates of nucleotide substitution. Four conserved 19-bp repeats occur at the beginning of the European and Adriatic flounder sequences. The common occurrence of tandem arrays in fish control regions could be related to a stable secondary structure. Molecular phylogenetic relationships among Pleuronectiformes agree well with previous morphologic data at all taxonomic levels. Molecular analyses could therefore contribute to resolving phylogenetic and taxonomic debates within the Pleuronectiformes.

RESUMO

In chick embryos whose sex had been previously identified by cytokaryologic methods, a light-microscope study of the number and dimensions of the germ cells (GCs) has been made from 2 to 7 days of incubation. Early differences between the sexes have been found. In females the GCs were larger and increased in number earlier than in males. This suggests an earlier differentiation of GCs in females. On the other hand, ultrastructural observations on GCs at 70 h incubation (colonization stage of the genital ridges) have revealed that male and female GCs differ from each other mainly in the amount of rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, glycogen particles and lipid droplets. This suggests early morpho-functional differences between male and female GCs.

RESUMO

The sex of chick embryos is diagnosed by cyto-karyological methods on skin fragments of 2-7 days' incubation before gonadal sex differentiation. In 44 males and 42 females statistical analyses have been made of the number and dimension of the germ cells, and of the volume of the gonadal primordia. Moreover an ultrastructural study has been made on the germ cells colonizing the genital ridges (70-hours of incubation). Early differences between the sexes have been found regarding: earlier numerical increase of CGs in the left gonadal primordium of the females; larger primordial germ cells in the female; the same cytological characteristics at ultrastructural level.
