RESUMO

The paper presents the results of examining the morphology of different forms of Trichomonas vaginalis by indirect immunofluorescence. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that the typical forms of vaginal trichomonads showed a very bright light green glow, around the periphery of a cell in particular; the atypical forms of trichomonads emitted in the green spectral region less brilliantly and evenly. Trichomonas fluorescence intensity was measured by spectrofluorescence assay. The experimental findings point to the fact that the fluorescence rate of typical forms, of Trichomonas is 2-4 times higher than that of its forms with atypical morphology.

RESUMO

For the first time to our knowledge, the noise performance of a frequency nondegenerate phase-sensitive amplifier (PSA) with unequalized input powers has been experimentally characterized, based on a fiber-based parametric copier-PSA scheme. Two different noise-figure (NF) definitions-separate and combined NFs-are provided and compared. The results show that the separate NF of the weaker input wave is lower than that of the stronger wave due to the correlated-light nature. When considering the combined NF, the optimal noise performance (0 dB NF) is obtained only when the input powers are equal. Experiments agree well with the theoretical predictions.

RESUMO

We report the first measurement of the joint photon-number probability distribution for a two-mode quantum state created by a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier. The measured distributions exhibit up to 1.9 dB of quantum correlation between the signal and idler photon numbers, whereas the marginal distributions are thermal as expected for parametric fluorescence.

We study the quantum-noise properties of spectrally filtered solitons in optical fibers. Perturbation theory, including a quantum description of the continuum, is used to derive a complete analytical expression for the second-order correlator of the amplitude quadrature. This correlator is subsequently used to optimize the frequency response of the filter numerically in order to achieve the minimum photon-number noise. For propagation distances up to three soliton periods, the length at which the best noise reduction occurs, a square filter is found to be approximately optimum. For longer distances, more-complicated filter shapes are predicted for the best noise reduction.

A perturbation approach is used to study the quantum noise of optical solitons in an asymmetric fiber Sagnac interferometer (a highly transmissive nonlinear optical loop mirror). Analytical expressions for the three second-order quadrature correlators are derived and used to predict the amount of detectable amplitude squeezing along with the optimum power-splitting ratio of the Sagnac interferometer. We find that it is the number-phase correlation owing to the Kerr nonlinearity that is primarily responsible for the observable noise reduction. The group-velocity dispersion affecting the field in the nonsoliton arm of the fiber interferometer is shown to limit the minimum achievable Fano factor.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate generation of bright sub-Poissonian light by means of parametric deamplification in a phase-sensitive fiber amplifier that is based on a balanced nonlinear Sagnac interferometer. On direct detection, the photocurrent noise falls below the shot-noise limit by (0.6 +/- 0.2) dB (1.4 dB when corrected for detection losses). To observe the noise reduction we employed a scheme that used two orthogonally polarized pulses to cancel the noise that arises from the predominantly polarized guided-acoustic-wave Brillouin scattering in the fiber. We also present a simplified semiclassical theory of quantum-noise suppression by this amplifier, which is found to be in good agreement with the experimental results.

RESUMO

Photon-number distributions for parametric fluorescence from a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier are measured with a novel self-homodyne technique. These distributions exhibit the thermal-state character predicted by theory. However, a difference between the fluorescence gain and the signal gain of the parametric amplifier is observed. We attribute this difference to a change in the signal-beam profile during the traveling-wave pulsed amplification process.
