The examination of patients with bronchial asthma has established that vitamin E supplemented to their multimodality therapy produces an immunological effect. The decreased functional activity of T lymphocytes increases and their levels elevate in their peripheral blood. There was also an increase in the blood levels of B cells, by elevating the count of mature B lymphocytes and reducing that of immature B cells. Vitamin E enhances the phagocytic activity of peripheral granulocytes whereas the serum activity of lysozyme and complement declines.

[Immunocorrecting properties and effect on the phosphorus-calcium metabolism of oxidevit (1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3)]. / Immunokorrigiruiushchie svoistva i vliianie na fosforno-kal'tsievyi obmen oksidevita (1 alpha-hydroksivitamina D3).

Effect of oxidevite (I alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3) on the patterns of immunity system and metabolism of calcium and phosphorus were studied in 45 patients with chronic bronchitis, which, were treated with the drug at doses of 2 or 4 micrograms during 1 or 2 weeks. Specific patterns of calcium and phosphorus metabolism were altered in the patients depending on dose of the drug and duration of the course treatment. The dose of 4 micrograms per a day within 2 weeks was excessive. All the immunity patterns studied involving amount of total and rosette-forming cells, T-lymphocyte helpers and T-lymphocyte suppressors, B lymphocytes, were normalized independently on the initial level of these patterns: the elevated values decreased, the decreased values-increased. The normal values of the immunity patterns studied were not altered during the oxidevite treatment course. Content of blood inorganic phosphorus correlated with leukocytes dynamics.

[Vitamin A: effect on phagocytosis and neutrophil bactericidal systems under normal conditions and in various pathological states]. / Vitamin A: vliianie na fagotsitoz i bakteritsidnye sistemy neitrofilov u liudei v norme i pri nekotorykh patologicheskikh protsessakh.

Effect of vitamin A on phagocytic activity and the state of bactericide system involving myeloperoxidase and cationic proteins was studied in neutrophils from peripheric blood of volunteers and of the patients with chronic pneumonia and lung cancer. Vitamin A was administered per os within 1 week at a daily dose of 500,000 IU. In healthy persons vitamin A, not affecting the ability of neutrophils to capture and lyse microbes, activated myeloperoxidase and increased the cationic proteins content. Under conditions of lung cancer the vitamin did not alter any patterns of phagocytosis studied. Vitamin A did not affect the capture and lysis of microbes in chronic pneumonia but increased distinctly the myeloperoxidase activity in neutrophils, impaired during the disease, and normalized partially the content of cationic proteins.

Studies made on volunteers who received vitamin A for a week have demonstrated that the content of peripheral blood lymphocytes increased, which was followed by a relative and absolute increase in the content of B lymphocytes and a rise in the number of T cells in the peripheral blood. An increase in the complementary activity of the blood serum and an increase in IgA content in it were also recorded. After a month the majority of the parameters under study returned to normal.
