RESUMO

This study was devoted to the development of novel devices and a methodology intended for generating ultrasonic waves in an air medium by using atmospheric pressure gas discharge. In the proposed electrode system, the discharge process was accompanied by the generation of acoustic waves on the emitter surface and, consequently, in the ambient air. The gas discharge emitter vibrations were analyzed by applying the technique of Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometry (SLDV). It was shown that the magnitude of displacements matched the corresponding characteristics of classical piezoelectric and magnetostrictive transducers. The use of the Fast Fourier transform procedure supplied amplitude-frequency spectra of vibrations generated by the gas discharge emitter. The amplitude-frequency spectrum analysis showed that the proposed emitter was able to generate acoustic waves in the air with frequencies from 50 Hz to 100 kHz, and such a device can be used for the nondestructive testing (NDT) of materials. The results of the statistical analysis of vibration displacements in the repetitive pulsed mode were discussed. A non-stable characteristic of the vibration displacement of the emitter membrane was demonstrated. The parameters of such instability were associated with the features of gas discharge processes. In the experiments, the proposed gas discharge emitter was used in combination with SLDV for inspecting carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer composites. The experiments demonstrated the possibility of using an air-coupled gas discharge transmitter to generate acoustic waves in NDT applications.

A comprehensive study was performed of the deformation and temperature behavior during quasi-static tension, as well as the peculiarities of accumulation and dissipation of energy during plastic deformation. Microstructural analysis at the pre-fracture stage of pure titanium and Ti-45Nb alloy in the coarse grain (CG) and ultrafine-grained (UFG) states was also conducted. It was shown that substructural and dispersion hardening leads to a change in the regularities of dissipation and accumulation energies during deformation of the samples of the pure titanium and Ti-45Nb alloy in the UFG state. Some features of structural transformations during deformation of the pure titanium and Ti-45Nb alloy samples in the CG and UFG states were studied. A band and cellular-network and fragmented dislocation structure was formed in the case of the CG state, while large anisotropic fragments were formed in the UFG state, thus specifying a local softening of the material before fracture.

The technique of 3D scanning laser Doppler vibrometry has recently appeared as a promising tool of nondestructive evaluation of discontinuity-like defects in composite polymers. The use of the phenomenon of local defect resonance (LDR) allows intensifying vibrations in defect zones, which can reliably be detected by means of laser vibrometry. The resonance acoustic stimulation of structural defects in materials causes compression/tension deformations, which are essentially lower than the material tensile strength, thus proving a nondestructive character of the LDR technique. In this study, the propagation of elastic waves in composites and their interaction with structural inhomogeneities were analyzed by performing 3D scanning of vibrations in Fast Fourier Transform mode. At each scanning point, the in-plane (x, y) and out of plane (z) vibration components were analyzed. The acoustic stimulation was fulfilled by generating a frequency-modulated harmonic signal in the range from 50 Hz to 100 kHz. In the case of a reference plate with a flat bottom hole, the resonance frequencies for all (x, y, and z) components were identical. In the case of impact damage in a carbon fiber reinforced plastic sample, the predominant contribution into total vibrations was provided by compression/tension deformations (x, y vibration component) to compare with vibrations by the z coordinate. In general, inspection results were enhanced by analyzing total vibration patterns obtained by averaging results at some resonance frequencies.

The photothermocapillary (PTC) effect is a deformation of the free surface of a thin liquid layer on a solid material that is caused by the dependence of the coefficient of surface tension on temperature. The PTC effect is highly sensitive to variations in the thermal conductivity of solids, and this is the basis for PTC techniques in the non-destructive testing of solid non-porous materials. These techniques analyze thermal conductivity and detect subsurface defects, evaluate the thickness of thin varnish-and-paint coatings (VPC), and detect air-filled voids between coatings and metal substrates. In this study, the PTC effect was excited by a "pumped" Helium-Neon laser, which provided the monochromatic light source that is required to produce optical interference patterns. The light of a small-diameter laser beam was reflected from a liquid surface, which was contoured by liquid capillary action and variations in the surface tension. A typical contour produces an interference pattern of concentric rings with a bright and wide outer ring. The minimal or maximal diameter of this pattern was designated as the PTC response. The PTC technique was evaluated to monitor the thickness of VPCs on thermally conductive solid materials. The same PTC technique has been used to measure the thickness of air-filled delaminations between a metal substrate and a coating.

This study is focused on the quantitative estimation of defect depth by applying pulsed thermal nondestructive testing. The majority of known defect characterization techniques are based on 1D heat conduction solutions, thus being inappropriate for evaluating defects with low aspect ratios. A novel method for estimating defect depth is proposed by taking into account the phenomenon of 3D heat diffusion, finite lateral size of defects and the thermal reflection coefficient at the boundary between a host material and defects. The method is based on the combination of a known analytical model and a non-linear fitting (NLF) procedure. The algorithm was verified both numerically and experimentally on 3D-printed polylactic acid plastic samples. The accuracy of depth prediction using the proposed method was compared with the reference characterization technique based on thermographic signal reconstruction to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed NLF method.

Pulsed thermography is a common technique for nondestructive testing (NDT) of materials. This study presents the apparent effusivity method for the quantitative evaluation of coating thickness in a one-sided thermal NDT procedure. The proposed algorithm is based on determining a threshold value of apparent effusivity, which can be found for particular coating-on-substrate structures. It has been found that the square root of the time at which the apparent effusivity curve reaches this threshold is proportional to the coating thickness. The efficiency of the proposed approach is demonstrated by analytical modeling and experimentation performed on thermally-sprayed coatings.

Quantitative aspects of infrared thermographic detection of water in aviation honeycomb panels are discussed in the framework of both 1D analytical and 3D numerical models. A criterion for the transition from 3D to 1D test geometry is introduced, and the influence of the honeycomb cell structure on the modeling results is demonstrated. Optimal test conditions are formulated both theoretically and experimentally in two practical cases where the force of gravity causes the water to be against the facesheet at the bottom of the cells or where a water gap separates the water from the top facesheet.

Paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) clones are frequently detected in patients with aplastic anaemia (AA). To evaluate the prognostic role of PNH clone presence we conducted a prospective study in 125 AA patients treated with combined immunosuppressive therapy (IST). Seventy-four patients (59%) had a PNH clone (PNH+ patients) at diagnosis, with a median clone size of 0·60% in granulocytes and 0·15% in red blood cells. The response rate at 6 months was higher in PNH+ patients than that in PNH- patients, both after first- and second-line IST: 68% vs. 45%, P = 0·0164 and 53% vs. 13%, P = 0·0502 respectively. Moreover, 42% of PNH+ patients achieved complete remission compared with only 16% of PNH- patients (P = 0·0029). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, PNH clone presence (odds ratio 2·56, P = 0·0180) and baseline absolute reticulocyte count (ARC) ≥30 × 10(9) /l (odds ratio 5·19, P = 0·0011) were independent predictors of response to treatment. Stratification according to PNH positivity and ARC ≥30 × 10(9) /l showed significant distinctions for cumulative incidence of response, overall and failure-free survival. The results of this prospective study confirmed the favourable prognostic value of PNH clone presence in the setting of IST for AA.

Although the prognostic significance of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been researched extensively in patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing chemotherapy, its role in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) requires further investigation. The present study evaluated the associations between VEGF level and relapse rate and early complications after HSCT. VEGF levels were analyzed in 91 consecutive patients before the start of conditioning, on day 0, on the day of engraftment, and on the day of diagnosis of veno-occlusive disease (VOD). Compared with a normal level, an elevated high VEGF-A level before conditioning was associated with an increased 2-year relapse rate (55% versus 24%, P = .003; hazard ratio [HR], 3.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.49 to 7.08) and decreased event-free survival (20% versus 44%; P = .022; HR, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.11 to 3.72). No association was found between VEGF level and the incidence of acute GVHD (P > .05). In patients with VOD, VEGF-A level was elevated on day 0 and on the day of VOD diagnosis (P < .05). A low VEGF-A level on day 0 was associated with reduced nonrelapse mortality (14% versus 35%; P = .048; HR, 0.32; 95% CI, 0.10 to 0.99). Our results indicate that a high VEGF-A level before HSCT increases the risk of relapse, and a high level after conditioning is associated with increased risks of early complications and nonrelapse mortality.
