The present investigation was aimed to study the anti-diabetic and hypolipidemic potential of Cinnamon cassia (Lauraceae family) bark in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The preliminary phytochemical analysis (hexane, petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanol, methanol, and aqueous extracts), GC-MS analysis (ethanol), in vitro (aqueous, ethanol and methanol), in vivo (ethanol) and in silico anti-diabetic activity with hypolipidemic effect of C. cassia bark was analysed. The ethanolic extract of the C. cassia bark has a fine inhibitory activity than the aqueous and methanolic extract. Out of 20 different compounds identified, seven compounds were biologically active, and 9-octadecenoic acid has highly interacted with PPARα/γ in docking studies. The levels of diabetic markers, enzymes, and lipid profiles were altered in STZ-induced rats, but after the treatment of C. cassia, the levels were returned to the normal. The study may prove the ethanolic extract of C. cassia has a powerful anti-diabetic and anti-hyperlipidemic activity.

Coriandrum sativum (Linn.) and Petroselinum crispum (Mill.) are the common herbs used for culinary purposes in daily life. The chlorophyll pigment in plants is being identified with various medicinal values, whereas iron is an essential micronutrient for the proper metabolism of the human body. The current research has been aimed at predicting the role of C. sativum and P. crispum in enhancing iron absorption via an in vitro approach. C. sativum and P. crispum have been analyzed for their capability of being a source of chlorophyll and iron concentration. The extracts prepared from solvents like carbinol, petroleum ether, and water were subjected to the identification of phytoconstituents through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, and the identified compounds were subjected to in silico studies against the iron-binding receptor, transferrin, to depict the binding affinity of the identified compounds. The carbinol extract was then put through in vitro analytical studies in Caco2 cell lines with a concentration of 500 µg/ml. Current research has shown that the leaves of C. sativum and P. crispum are an excellent source of chlorophyll and iron and has also suggested that these herbs efficiently enhance the absorption of iron in human intestinal cells.

The medicinal properties of Cinnamon cassia (C. cassia) bark have been reported for their clinical importance for many diseases including diabetes. However, there is no clear evidence so far regarding dose selection for its hepato- and nephroprotective effect in diabetic condition. Hence, the present study aims at evaluating in vitro antioxidant activity, the acute toxicity, and dose fixation of C. cassia bark for their effective medicinal values in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced rats. All the extracts exhibited potential in vitro antioxidant activity and showed a dose-dependent (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 mg/kg BW) acute toxicity by in vivo model. The levels of aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), urea, and creatinine showed a significant elevation in animals treated with the highest dose. In further studies along with histopathological studies, animals treated with STZ (60 mg/kg BW) followed by a different dose (300, 400, and 500 mg/kg BW) of ethanolic extract of the C. cassia bark and glibenclamide (3 mg/kg BW) revealed that the altered level of mitochondrial enzymes, hepatic, and renal marker in STZ-induced animals were restored in C. cassia bark extract-treated group as of control. These results could be of scientific support for the use of the ethanolic extract of the C. cassia bark in folk medicine for the management of diabetes and its associated complications.

BACKGROUND: Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a major reproductive complication in women, which is characterized by recurrent fetal loss, thrombosis, and thrombocytopenia in association with anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL). AIMS: To analyze the prevalence of aCL and antiphosphatidylserine antibodies (aPS) in relation to pregnancy failures in women with the history of recurrent spontaneous abortion. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A sequential study of 155 patients, who had three or more recurrent spontaneous abortions, was carried out. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Women with unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss in first trimester were selected for this study. Anticardiolipin antibodies IgG and aPS IgG were detected in the serum by the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay method. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Percentage calculation was carried out. Two-tailed t-test was performed to know the significance of aCL and aPS total population. RESULT: The levels of aCL IgG and aPS IgG were detected as 40% (62) and 19% (18), respectively in women with history of recurrent abortion. CONCLUSION: Anticardiolipin antibody is found to be the most important factor for recurrent abortion. In addition, women with negative aCL are having positive for another antiphospholipid antibodies like aPS, which may involve in recurrent abortion.
