RESUMO

Seventeen commercially important marine fish species were caught in Mumbai Harbor using a trawl net and evaluated using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy and ICP-OES. It was found that certain species of fish contained lower levels of all metals tested. J. elongatus and C. dussumieri had the highest levels of all 8 metals tested. The heavy metal concentrations were significantly varied within and between the studied fishes (p<0.05). However, a significant correlation among heavy metals was observed. This investigation indicated that various levels of heavy metals exist in the fish species sampled, but those concentrations are within the maximum residual levels recommended by the European Union and FAO/WHO. Therefore, fish caught in Mumbai Harbor can be considered safe for human consumption.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Adenocarcinoid of the appendix is a rare malignant tumour with features of both adenocarcinoma and carcinoid, showing both epithelial and endocrine differentiation. Mucinous cystadenoma is the commonest of the benign neoplasms of the appendix, with an incidence of 0.6% in appendicectomy specimens. We report a rare combination of these tumours and discuss the latest treatment options. To the best of our knowledge, only six cases have been reported in the literature to date. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old Caucasian man presented to our department with a right iliac fossa mass associated with pain. Laparoscopy revealed an adenocarcinoid of the appendix in combination with mucinous cystadenoma. He underwent a radical right hemicolectomy with clear margins and lymph nodes. CONCLUSION: Adenocarcinoids account for 2% of primary appendiceal malignancies. Most tumours are less than 2 cm in diameter and 20% of them metastasize to the ovaries. The mean age for presentation is 59 years and the 5-year survival rate ranges from 60% to 84%. Right hemicolectomy is generally advised if any of the following features are present: tumours greater than 2 cm, involvement of resection margins, greater than 2 mitoses/10 high-power fields on histology, extension of tumour beyond serosa. Chemotherapy mostly with 5-Fluorouracil and Leucovorin is advised for remnant disease after surgery. Cytoreductive surgery with intraperitoneal chemotherapy can offer improved survival for advanced peritoneal dissemination.

RESUMO

This study examines retrospectively the functional outcome of patients at 5 years following their ankle fracture surgery using the Olerud-Molander Ankle Score (OMAS) and SF-12 questionnaire. Of 69 patients, 43 were females and 26 males. The mean age was 50.7 years. There were 74 and 26% of Weber 'B' and 'C' fractures, respectively. The mean OMAS was 75.2. About 63% of the patients were still complaining of stiffness, around 45% patients were still complaining of ankle swelling, 50% of patients still had some sort of pain, 39% still thought that they had not fully recovered and 38% did not return to their pre-injury sporting activity. Apart from the age, no significant difference was seen in the OMAS due to gender, fracture type or timing of surgery. Our findings show that many patients who have had surgery for ankle fractures will still have some functional limitations even 5 years after the injury.
