RESUMO

In this work, waste plastics have been used with bentonite clay to produce silica-containing graphene nanosheets (GNs) for adsorption of nitrate and phosphate from synthetic water. The GNs were obtained by the two steps process, namely (1) pyrolysis at 750 °C and (2) ball milling. Then, GNs were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, FESEM, HRTEM and EDX spectroscopy, which provided the details of material's morphology, surface properties, and composition. From Raman spectroscopy, D and G bands were found at 1342 cm-1 and 1594 cm-1, respectively, which confirmed the presence of nanosheets on the graphene surface. Furthermore, the layers of nanosheets were confirmed by the HRTEM analysis and XRD peaks. In analytical study, the batch experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of operational parameters such as pH (03-12), contact time (05-120 min), adsorbent dosage (0.01-0.06 g), and initial concentrations of adsorbates (10-50 mg/L for nitrate and 03-15 mg/L for phosphate) on adsorption process. The removal percentage of nitrate and phosphate at optimum dosage = 0.05 g, pH = 6.5, contact time = 60 min, nitrate concentration = 30 mg/L, and phosphate concentration = 09 mg/L were found to be 85 and 91, respectively. The highest adsorption capacity of nitrate and phosphate was found to be 53 mg/g and 16.4 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption behaviour of both nitrate and phosphate showed chemisorption as the experimental data were well fitted by the pseudo-2nd-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model. Life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of the synthesis process was conducted to evaluate the cost-benefit analysis for commercial feasibility. The estimated price for the synthesis of GNs using 1 kg of waste plastics and bentonite clay as precursor was $4.21, suggesting commercialization.

Objective: The purpose of this literature review is to summarize and provide a brief overview of our current understanding of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and the role of stem cell transplantation (SCT) in its management. Background: AML is a malignant hematological disorder that is characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of myeloid blood cells. This disease has been associated with various risk factors such as ionizing radiation, cigarette smoke, pesticides/herbicides, and chemotherapy. SCT remains the most beneficial treatment for medically fit AML patients due to superior survival outcomes. Methods: A thorough search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov, Embase and Web of Science using related keywords. Current articles on the uses of stem cell therapy in AML patients were selected. Conclusions: Long term exposure to ionizing radiation and other harmful substances such as benzene, cigarette smoke and chemotherapeutic drugs plays an important role in AML carcinogenesis. Mutations in certain genes (e.g., ASXL1, RUNX1, KIT, TP53, BCR-ABL1) seem to accelerate the process as they affect normal cellular proliferation and cell death. These events may give rise to a small subpopulation of leukemic stem cells (LSC) which continuously sustain tumor development and growth. Patients who are deemed to be medically "fit" should receive an allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) due to improved overall survival (OS) (~50%) and decreased relapsed risk (32% vs. 59%). Several studies have revealed that the medically "unfit" may benefit from more conventional agents such as azacytidine, decitabine, venetoclax or sorafenib.

BACKGROUND: Children are vulnerable to musculoskeletal injuries both at home and on the street for various reasons. Morbidity and disabilities resulting from these, mostly preventable, injuries, make them a burden to their families and society. The role of various factors associated with injuries is often not documented. METHODS: This prospective study, done on 100 children aged up to 12 years with musculoskeletal trauma, analysed in details, the various modes of injuries. RESULTS: One in every five patient was a child below 12 years of age. Boys were injured more than girls. Injuries, especially fractures, were most common in the extremities, the upper limb more commonly injured than the lower limb. Most of the injuries occurred at home. The most common mode of injuries was falls that happened while playing both within and outside the home, followed by road traffic accidents. Most injuries occurred during daytime. CONCLUSIONS: Injuries in children were found to be preventable. Small interventions while constructing homes can contribute tremendously to injury prevention and control in children. Parental awareness about the various modes of injury, role of supervised playing and their responsibility towards injury prevention can play a key role in reducing the morbidity associated with childhood fractures.
