Atypical mycobacteriosis as a complication of talc pneumoconiosis.

A 57 year old man, receiving compensation for talc pneumoconiosis since 1977, was admitted to hospital for the first time in 1987, with symptoms of weight loss, fever, dyspnoea and productive cough. A chest roentgenogram showed bilateral cavitation. Two years later, Mycobacterium xenopi was found in sputum cultures. Despite specific oral antibiotherapy, the patient's health deteriorated and he died in 1990. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an association of talcosis with a M. xenopi pneumonia. The relative timing of the two diseases suggests that talc pneumoconiosis predisposed to the infection by M. xenopi.

Clinical evaluation of hyposensitization in allergic rhinitis: comparison of the results obtained with three different extracts. Material from a 3-year study.

Three different immunotherapy regimens were given during 4 years to 60 randomized patients. One can conclude from the symptom and medication scores that a tyrosine-bound mixture is less active. The results obtained with mixed grass and with highly purified timothy pollen are comparable, but in favour of the latter.

A comparative study of an aqueous grass pollen extract and glutaraldehyde-treated grass pollen-tyrosine adsorbate in the treatment of pollenosis.

Hyposensitization therapy gave a subjective improvement in 84% of grass pollen-sensitive patients receiving an eighteen dose course of aqueous pollen extract (SDV) and in 69% of patients receiving a three dose course of glutaraldehyde-treated pollentyrosine adsorbate (Pollinex). Systemic reactions to treatment were considerably more frequent with the aqueous course, but virtually absent with the short adsorbate course, which seems therefore more convenient for the patient. The SDV treatment induced a more pronounced IgG antibody response both in patients and in guinea-pigs receiving the clinical dosage schedule. The Pollinex treatment showed a tendency to enhance the IgE antibody response in new patients.

[Comparative studies on pirbuterol, salbutamol and a placebo administered as an aerosol in asthmatic patients]. / Vergelijkende studie met pirbuterol, salbutamol en een placebo toegediend onder vorm van gedoseerde aerosols bij astmatische patiënten.

In a single blind cross-over study 12 patients with asthma received in randomised order aerosols of pirbuterol 400 micrograms, salbutamol 200 micrograms or placebo. Only 9 patients met the criteria and were taken into account for the statistical analysis, namely a stable reversible broncho-obstruction. Pirbuterol and salbutamol did induce a considerable bronchodilation. Both drugs had a similar activity and few side effects.
