OBJECTIVE: Critical components of the nasal endoscopic examination have not been definitively established for either the normal examination or for clinical disorders. This study aimed to identify concordance among rhinologists regarding the importance of examination findings for various nasal pathologies. STUDY DESIGN: A consortium of 19 expert rhinologists across the United States was asked to rank the importance of findings on nasal endoscopy for 5 different sinonasal symptom presentations. SETTING: An online questionnaire was distributed in July 2023. METHODS: The questionnaire utilized JotForm® software and featured 5 cases with a set of 4 identical questions per case, each covering a common indication for nasal endoscopy. Rankings were synthesized into Normalized Attention Scores (NASs) and Weighted Normalized Attention Scores (W-NASs) to represent the perceived importance of each feature, scaled from 0 to 1. RESULTS: General concordance was found for examination findings on nasal endoscopy within each case. The perceived features of importance differed between cases based on clinical presentation. For instance, in evaluating postnasal drip, the middle meatus was selected as the most important structure to examine (NAS, 0.73), with mucus selected as the most important abnormal finding (W-NAS, 0.66). The primary feature of interest for mucus was whether it was purulent or not (W-NAS, 0.67). Similar analyses were performed for features in each case. CONCLUSION: The implicit framework existing among rhinologists may help standardize examinations and improve diagnostic accuracy, augment the instruction of trainees, and inform the development of artificially intelligent algorithms to enhance clinical decision-making during nasal endoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposures have been postulated to play an important role in the pathophysiology of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Particulate matter (PM) is one of the most widely studied ambient air pollutants, but its peri-operative impact on CRS is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of acute, peri-operative PM exposure on outcomes after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). METHODS: Participants with CRS who self-selected ESS were prospectively enrolled. The 22-item SinoNasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) and Medical Outcomes Study Questionnaire Short-Form 6-D (SF-6D) health utility values scores were recorded. Using residence zip codes, a secondary analysis of patient exposure to PM <2.5 µm and <10 µm (PM2.5 and PM10, respectively) was performed for the month of surgery utilizing data from Environmental Protection Agency air quality monitors. Spearman's correlation coefficients (ρ), 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and effect estimates (ß) were used to determine the magnitudes of association. Simple, multivariate regression analysis was also completed. RESULTS: One hundred and seven patients from four geographically unique institutions across the US were enrolled with a follow-up of 6 months. Patients with higher peri-operative PM2.5 exposure had less improvement in their SNOT-22 scores after ESS compared to those with less exposure using both univariate analysis (ρ = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.43; P = .01) and after covariate adjustment with multivariate analysis (B = 1.06, 95% CI: 0.001, 2.14, P = .05). Similar associations were not found with SF-6D outcomes or with PM10 as an exposure of interest. No significant correlations were found between peri-operative PM levels and Lund-Kennedy endoscopy scores post-operatively. CONCLUSION: Preliminary data from this pilot study reveal that PM exposure at the time of ESS may negatively associate with post-operative improvement in sinonasal quality-of-life. Larger, population-based studies with more standardized PM exposure windows are needed to confirm the clinical significance of the present findings.

BACKGROUND: India suffers a quarter of the global burden of cervical cancer (CC) but is controllable by taking some precautions. The major issue is the low amount of participation among women in screening and vaccination for disease. The objective of the research is to evaluate knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding CC among college going students residing in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh-India. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 380 subjects whose ages ranged from 15 to 25 and older. The questionnaires were circulated through google forms. The socio-demographic variables and KAP levels are represented by descriptive statistics. The Chi-square test is used to determine the relationship between sociodemographic factors and KAP levels. RESULTS: Among 380 subjects, 172 (54.7%) are aware of CC, 71% have poor knowledge, and 20% have good knowledge about CC. More than three-fourths of women 374 (98.4%) are not having regular practice towards CC. CONCLUSION: The awareness about CC is very low in the population, so prevention of CC relies on routine screening, proper vaccination, and treatment. Awareness programs and promoting knowledge about cervical health in social media are required.

OBJECTIVE: .In this study, we investigated the potential of meloxicam (MLX) developed as transferosomal gel as a novel lipidic drug delivery system to address osteoarthritis (OTA), a degenerative joint disease that causes pain and stiffness. By incorporating meloxicam into a transferosomal gel, our aim was to provide a targeted and efficient delivery system capable of alleviating symptoms and slowing down the progression of OTA. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Classical lipid film hydration technique was utilized to formulate different transferosomal formulations. Different transferosomal formulations were prepared by varying the molar ratio of phospholipon-90H (phosphodylcholine) to DSPE (50:50, 60:40, 70:30, 80:20, and 90:10) and per batch, 80mg of total lipid was used. The quality control parameters such as entrapment efficiency, particle size and morphology, polydispersity and surface electric charge, in vitro drug release, ex vivo permeation and stability were measured. RESULTS: The optimized transferosomal formulations revealed a small vesicle size (121±12nm) and greater MLX entrapment (68.98±2.3%). Transferosomes mediated gel formulation MLX34 displayed pH (6.3±0.2), viscosity (6236±12.3 cps), spreadability (13.77±1.77 gm.cm/sec) and also displayed sustained release pattern of drug release (81.76±7.87% MLX released from Carbopol-934 gel matrix in 24h). MLX34 revealed close to substantial anti-inflammatory response, with ∼81% inhibition of TNF-α in 48h. Physical stability analysis concluded that refrigerator temperature was the preferred temperature to store transferosomal gel. CONCLUSION: MLX loaded transferosomes containing gel improved the skin penetration and therefore resulted into increased inhibition of TNF-α level.

Blood phosphorylated tau (p-tau) biomarkers, including p-tau217, show high associations with Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathologic change and clinical stage. Certain plasma p-tau217 assays recognize tau forms phosphorylated additionally at threonine-212, but the contribution of p-tau212 alone to AD is unknown. We developed a blood-based immunoassay that is specific to p-tau212 without cross-reactivity to p-tau217. Here, we examined the diagnostic utility of plasma p-tau212. In five cohorts (n = 388 participants), plasma p-tau212 showed high performances for AD diagnosis and for the detection of both amyloid and tau pathology, including at autopsy as well as in memory clinic populations. The diagnostic accuracy and fold changes of plasma p-tau212 were similar to those for p-tau217 but higher than p-tau181 and p-tau231. Immunofluorescent staining of brain tissue slices showed prominent p-tau212 reactivity in neurofibrillary tangles that co-localized with p-tau217 and p-tau202/205. These findings support plasma p-tau212 as a peripherally accessible biomarker of AD pathophysiology.

Physical and psychological stress has an inverse relation with male libido and sperm quality. The present study investigates the potential fertility-enhancing properties of Desmodium gangeticum (DG) root extracts in male Wister rats subjected to immobilization-induced stress (SIMB). DG roots were extracted using n-hexane (HEDG), chloroform (CEDG), and water (AEDG). In the pilot study, aphrodisiac protentional was investigated at two doses (125 and 250 mg kg-1) of each extract. In the main study, the HEDG and AEDG at 125 and 250 mg kg-1 were challenged for the stress by immobilization (SIMB), for 6 h daily over 28 days. Parameters assessed included aphrodisiac effects, gonadosomatic index (GSI), semen quality, sperm quantity, fructose content, serum hormonal levels, testicular oxidative stress, and testicular histopathology. Additional in silico studies, including the lipid solubility index, molecular docking, molecular dynamics, and SymMap studies were conducted for validation. HEDG demonstrated significant aphrodisiac activity, improved - GSI, sperm quality and quantity, and fructose content, serum testosterone levels, histological changes induced by SIMB in the testes. Swiss ADME studies indicated Gangetin (a pterocarpan) had a high brain permeation index (4.81), a superior docking score (-8.22), and higher glide energy (-42.60), compared with tadalafil (-7.17). The 'Lig fit Prot' plot in molecular dynamics simulations revealed a strong alignment between Gangetin and phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). HEDG exerts aphrodisiac effects by increasing blood testosterone levels and affecting PDE5 activity. The protective effects on spermatozoa-related parameters and testicular histological changes are attributed to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, of pterocarpan (gangetin).

Aim: The study evaluated the antifungal activity of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), calcium hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)2), and modified salt solution (MSS) assisted with passive ultrasonic irrigation against Candida albicans. Materials and Methods: One hundred and thirty-six single-rooted premolars were decoronated and enlarged up to a file #45, autoclaved, inoculated with C. albicans, and incubated for 72 h. The samples were randomly distributed into eight groups (n = 17) according to the protocol for decontamination G1: No treatment, G2: Distilled water (DW), G3: 2.5% NaOCl, G4: 2.5% NaOCl + ultrasonic activation (US), G5: 2.5% Ca(OCl)2, G6: 2.5% Ca(OCl)2 + US, G7: MSS, G8: MSS + US. Microbiological testing (Colony forming Unit [CFU] counting) was performed before and after the treatment. Statistical Analysis: Data were subjected to the one-way analysis of variance followed by the Tukey's post hoc test (P < 0.05). Results and Conclusion: Groups 1 and 2 showed the highest mean contamination (5.41 and 4.31 log10 CFU/mL, respectively), which was statistically different from all the other groups (P < 0.001). G4 showed the lowest mean contamination (0.24 log10 CFU/mL) with statistically significant value (P < 0.001). 2.5% NaOCl with ultrasonic activation can aid in significant fungal reduction. Ultrasonic activation of 2.5% NaOCl, 2.5% Ca(OCl)2, and MSS was also found to have improved antifungal activity against C. albicans.

OBJECTIVE: Socioeconomic status (SES) is linked to health outcomes but has not been well studied in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The area deprivation index (ADI) is a comprehensive measure of geographic SES that ranks neighborhood disadvantage. This investigation used ADI to understand the impact of neighborhood disadvantage on CRS treatment outcomes. METHODS: A total of 642 study participants with CRS were prospectively enrolled and self-selected endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) or continued appropriate medical therapy as treatment. The 22-item SinoNasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) and Medical Outcomes Study Questionnaire Short-Form 6-D (SF-6D) health utility value scores were recorded pre- and post-treatment. Using residence zip codes, national ADI scores were retrospectively assigned to patients. Spearman's correlation coefficients (Rs) and Cramer's V effect size (φc ) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. RESULTS: A history of ESS was associated with significantly worse ADI scores compared to no history of ESS (φc  = 0.18; 95% CI: 0.10, 0.25; p < 0.001). Baseline total SNOT-22 (Rs = 0.14; 95% CI: 0.06, 0.22; p < 0.001) and SF-6D values (Rs = -0.20; 95% CI: -0.27, -0.12; p < 0.001) were significantly negatively correlated with national ADI rank. No significant correlations between ADI and within-subject improvement, or achievement of >1 minimal clinically important difference, in SNOT-22 or SF-6D scores after treatment were found. CONCLUSIONS: Geographic socioeconomic deprivation was associated with worse baseline disease severity and history of prior surgical intervention. However, ADI did not correlate with improvement in disease-specific outcomes. The impact of socioeconomic deprivation on outcomes in CRS requires further investigation.

INTRODUCTION: In aging populations, the coexistence of multiple health comorbidities represents a significant challenge for clinicians and researchers. Leveraging advances in omics techniques to characterize these health conditions may provide insight into disease pathogenesis as well as reveal biomarkers for monitoring, prognostication, and diagnosis. Researchers have previously established the utility of big data approaches with respect to comprehensive health outcome measurements in younger populations, identifying protein markers that may provide significant health information with a single blood sample. METHODS: Here, we employed a similar approach in two cohorts of older adults, the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (mean age = 76.12 years) and InCHIANTI Study (mean age = 66.05 years), examining the relationship between levels of serum proteins and 5 key health outcomes: kidney function, fasting glucose, physical activity, lean body mass, and percent body fat. RESULTS: Correlations between proteins and health outcomes were primarily shared across both older adult cohorts. We further identified that most proteins associated with health outcomes in the older adult cohorts were not associated with the same outcomes in a prior study of a younger population. A subset of proteins, adiponectin, MIC-1, and NCAM-120, were associated with at least three health outcomes in both older adult cohorts but not in the previously published younger cohort, suggesting that they may represent plausible markers of general health in older adult populations. CONCLUSION: Taken together, these findings suggest that comprehensive protein health markers have utility in aging populations and are distinct from those identified in younger adults, indicating unique mechanisms of disease with aging.

Hypothalamus is central to food intake and satiety. Recent data unveiled the expression of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDAR) on hypothalamic neurons and their interaction with GABAA and serotoninergic neuronal circuits. However, the precise mechanisms governing energy homeostasis remain elusive. Notably, in females, the consumption of progesterone-containing preparations, such as hormonal replacement therapy and birth control pills, has been associated with hyperphagia and obesity-effects mediated through the hypothalamus. To elucidate this phenomenon, we employed the progesterone-induced obesity model in female Swiss albino mice. Four NMDAR modulators were selected viz. dextromethorphan (Dxt), minocycline, d-aspartate, and cycloserine. Obesity was induced in female mice by progesterone administration for 4 weeks. Mice were allocated into 7 groups, group-1 as vehicle control (arachis oil), group-2 (progesterone + arachis oil), and group-3 as positive-control (progesterone + sibutramine); other groups were treated with test drugs + progesterone. Various parameters were recorded like food intake, thermogenesis, serum lipids, insulin, AST and ALT levels, organ-to-body weight ratio, total body fat, adiposity index, brain serotonin levels, histology of liver, kidney, and sizing of fat cells. Dxt-treated group has shown a significant downturn in body weight (p < 0.05) by a decline in food intake (p < 0.01), organ-to-liver ratio (p < 0.001), adiposity index (p < 0.01), and a rise in body temperature and brain serotonin level (p < 0.001). Dxt demonstrated anti-obesity effects by multiple mechanisms including interaction with hypothalamic GABAA channels and anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging effects, improving the brain serotonin levels, and increasing insulin release from the pancreatic ß-cells.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) endotypes show a differential response to endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). We explored patient mucous inflammatory cytokine expression and associations with patient-reported and clinically measured post-operative outcome measures. METHODS: Patients with CRS were prospectively recruited between 2016 and 2021 into a national multicenter, observational study. Mucus was collected from the olfactory cleft preoperatively and evaluated for 26 biomarkers using cluster analysis. Patient-reported outcome measures included the 22-item Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) and Questionnaire of Olfactory Dysfunction (QOD). Additional clinical measures of disease severity included threshold, discrimination, and identification (TDI) scores using "Sniffin' Sticks" testing and Lund-Kennedy endoscopic score (LKES). RESULTS: A total of 115 patients were clustered into type 2 inflammatory, non-type 2 inflammatory, noninflammatory, and two indeterminate clusters based on individual protein levels. Overall, the type 2 inflammatory cluster was found to have the highest mean improvement in both SNOT-22 (-28.3 [standard deviation, ±16.2]) and TDI (6.5 [standard deviation, ±7.9]) scores 6 months after ESS. However, on average, all endotype clusters demonstrated improvement in all outcome measures after ESS without statistically significant between-group differences in SNOT-22 (p = 0.738), QOD (p = 0.306), TDI (p = 0.358), or LKES (p = 0.514) measures. CONCLUSIONS: All CRS endotype clusters responded favorably to surgery and showed improvements in patient-reported and objective outcome measures. Thus, ESS should be considered a more generalized CRS therapy, and benefits appear to not be limited to specific endotypes.

BACKGROUND: Poor air quality increases the risk of developing chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and other airway diseases. However, there are limited data on air pollutants and CRS-specific disease severity. We assessed the impact of air pollutants on sinonasal-specific and general quality-of-life (QOL) measures in a multi-institutional cohort of patients with CRS. METHODS: Participants with CRS were prospectively enrolled in a cross-sectional study and self-selected continued appropriate medical therapy or endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). The 22-item SinoNasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) and Medical Outcomes Study Questionnaire Short-Form 6-D (SF-6D) health utility value scores were recorded. Patient exposure to air pollutants was determined using residence zip codes. Unadjusted group differences were compared, and correlation coefficients were evaluated to identify the magnitude of bivariate association. RESULTS: A total of 486 patients were enrolled and followed for a mean of 6.9 (standard deviation [SD] ± 2.3) months. Pollutant exposure did not significantly correlate with baseline SNOT-22 or SF-6D scores. Revision ESS was associated with higher median fine particulate matter (PM2.5; Δ = 0.12, [95% confidence interval {CI}: 0.003, 0.234]; p = 0.006) compared with primary surgery. PM2.5, PM10, and nitrogen dioxide concentrations (µg/m3) did not correlate with change in total SNOT-22 or SF-6D scores after treatment. Nevertheless, sulfur dioxide (SNOT-22: ρ = -0.121 [95% CI: -0.210, -0.030]; p = 0.007; SF-6D: ρ = 0.095 [95% CI: 0.002, 0.186]; p = 0.04) and carbon monoxide (SNOT-22: ρ = -0.141 [95% CI: -0.230, 0.050]; p = 0.002) exposure did correlate with these outcome measures. CONCLUSION: Air pollutants may contribute, at least in part, to disease severity in CRS; future investigation is needed to further elucidate the nature of this relationship.

OBJECTIVE: Lamotrigine (LTG) an anticonvulsant drug with a dissociation constant (pKa: 5.7), suffers from enhanced blood plasma spike after each dose, when administered as fast release tablet. Being BCS class-II candidate and pH dependent solubility, development of release-controlled tablets of LTG is a major challenge. This investigation aims at designing the release-controlled tablet (RCT) formulation of LTG using a solid dispersion (SD) technique via addressing its solubility and release problems. MATERIAL AND METHODS: RCT of LTG was fabricated using SD blend of Eudragit RL and Eudragit RS and PVP K-30 with different polymer blend ratio (1:5 and 1:7). The optimization of RCT of LTG was performed using D-optimal mixture design with three independent variables, three response variables, and one constraint. The dissolution rate was determined and data were then fitted to different mathematical models. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and tableting parameters were analyzed. RESULT: In vitro studies of predicted optimized batches (POBs) have shown that drug release over a period of 12hours was 88.05±3.4% in media I, 86.10±3.7% in media II and 85.84±4.2% in media III. An in vitro kinetic model equating R2-value for all the tested models indicated that the first order and Higuchi release kinetics model were the most appropriate. CONCLUSION: Based on the optimized formulation consisting of SD of LTG with Eudragit RL, Eudragit RS and PVP K-30, the release rate was consistently similar throughout the GI tract, regardless of the pH of the environment.

OBJECTIVE: This investigation aimed to explore the potential of non-ionic surfactant based niosomal vesicles encapsulating tenoxicam (TN; anti-rheumatic drug) for the treatment of rheumatic diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Mechanical dispersion technique with controlled pressure was employed to prepare different niosomal formulations. The effects of different ratios of surfactant (span-60), lipid, and sodium deoxycholate on noisome's physicochemical properties have been examined. Moreover, inhibition of TNF-α in lipopolysaccharide-activated cultured Human leukemia monocytic (THP-1) cells were demonstrated to assess the in vitro inflammation profile. Finally, the optimized niosomal formulation (TN3) was prepared in gel matrix consist of carbopol 934 (termed as TN34) and stability was also tested at 4±2 ÌŠC, 25±2 ÌŠC, 37±2 ÌŠC and 45±2 ÌŠC for 6 months. RESULTS: The optimized niosomal formulation exhibited a small vesicle size (165±14nm) and high drug encapsulation (79.64±1.5%). Niosomal gel formulation TN34 showed pH (6.7), viscosity (6810±3.34 cps), spreadability (19.11±1.87gm.cm/sec) and also displayed sustained release pattern of drug release (98.16±0.07% TN released from gel matrix in 24h) in vitro release study. TN34 exhibited substantial anti-inflammatory response, with ∼75% inhibition of TNF-α in 48h. Stability investigation revealed that refrigerator temperature is most suitable for the storage of niosomal gel. CONCLUSION: Transdermal niosomal formulation displayed promising potential in the treatment of rheumatic diseases.

Objective: The study aimed to investigate otolaryngologists' knowledge, trust, acceptance, and concerns with clinical applications of artificial intelligence (AI). Methods: This study used mixed methods with survey and semistructured interviews. Survey was e-mailed to American Rhinologic Society members, of which a volunteer sample of 86 members responded. Nineteen otolaryngologists were purposefully recruited and interviewed until thematic saturation was achieved. Results: Seventy-six respondents (10% response rate) completed the majority of the survey: 49% worked in academic settings and 43% completed residency 10 or fewer years ago. Of 19 interviewees, 58% worked in academic settings, and 47% completed residency 10 or fewer years ago. Familiarity: Only 8% of survey respondents reported having AI training in residency, although 72% had familiarity with general AI concepts; 0 interviewees had personal experience with AI in clinical settings. Expected uses: Of the surveyed otolaryngologists, 82% would use an AI-based clinical decision aid and 74% were comfortable with AI proposing treatment recommendations. However, only 44% of participants would trust AI to identify malignancy and 53% to interpret radiographic images. Interviewees trusted AI for simple tasks, such as labeling septal deviation, more than complex ones, such as identifying tumors. Factors influencing AI adoption: 89% of survey participants would use AI if it improved patient satisfaction, 78% would be willing to use AI if experts and studies validated the technologies, and 73% would only use AI if it increased efficiency. Sixty-one percent of survey respondents expected AI incorporation into clinical practice within 5 years. Interviewees emphasized that AI adoption depends on its similarity to their clinical judgment and to expert opinion. Concerns included nuanced or complex cases, poor design or accuracy, and the personal nature of physician-patient relationships. Conclusion: Few physicians have experience with AI technologies but expect rapid adoption in the clinic, highlighting the urgent need for clinical education and research. Otolaryngologists are most receptive to AI "augmenting" physician expertise and administrative capacity, with respect for physician autonomy and maintaining relationships with patients. (1) Objective: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex disease involving immune dysregulation, episodic flares, and poor quality of life (QOL). For a decentralized digital study of SLE patients, machine learning was used to assess patient-reported outcomes (PROs), QOL, and biometric data for predicting possible disease flares. (2) Methods: Participants were recruited from the LupusCorner online community. Adults self-reporting an SLE diagnosis were consented and given a mobile application to record patient profile (PP), PRO, and QOL metrics, and enlisted participants received smartwatches for digital biometric monitoring. The resulting data were profiled using feature selection and classification algorithms. (3) Results: 550 participants completed digital surveys, 144 (26%) agreed to wear smartwatches, and medical records (MRs) were obtained for 68. Mining of PP, PRO, QOL, and biometric data yielded a 26-feature model for classifying participants according to MR-identified disease flare risk. ROC curves significantly distinguished true from false positives (ten-fold cross-validation: p < 0.00023; five-fold: p < 0.00022). A 25-feature Bayesian model enabled time-variant prediction of participant-reported possible flares (P(true) > 0.85, p < 0.001; P(nonflare) > 0.83, p < 0.0001). (4) Conclusions: Regular profiling of patient well-being and biometric activity may support proactive screening for circumstances warranting clinical assessment.

Biogenic nanoparticle production is in demand as it is secure, has great promise, and is environmental friendly. This study aimed at green synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of Terminalia arjuna selenium nanoparticles (TA-SeNPs) for their antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer activities, and their incorporation in gel for biomedical applications. The bio-reduction attributes of the T. arjuna (TA) bark extract were utilized to fabricate selenium nanoparticles. The TA bark extract is abundant in phenolics (193.63 ± 1.61 mg gallic acid equivalents/g), flavonoids (88.23 ± 0.39 mg quercetin equivalents/g), and tannins (109.46 ± 1.16 mg catechin equivalents/g), which perform as effective capping and stabilizing agents, thus enabling the fabrication of stable SeNPs. The fabrication of TA-SeNPs was corroborated by UV-visible spectra, which exhibited surface plasmon resonance at 291 nm. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated nano-sized spherical TA-SeNPs with an average diameter ranging from 100 to 150 nm. Zeta potential analysis revealed that TA-SeNPs were negatively charged (-26.1 mV). X-ray diffraction presented amorphous TA-SeNPs with a quantification of 82.36 ± 10.2 µg/mL resulting from ICP-AES. The IC50 45.18 ± 0.11 µg/mL for the DPPH assay and 66.51% reducing power capacity values indicated that the TA-SeNPs possessed excellent radical scavenging efficacy. Moreover, the TA-SeNPs exhibited a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against potential pathogens. Additionally, the TA-SeNPs exhibited a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line, with an IC50 of 23.41 µg/mL. Furthermore, the TA-SeNP-incorporated gel showed excellent spreadability, extrudability, and consistency with retention of antimicrobial properties and hydrophilic contact angle. As an outcome, TA-SeNPs offer the possibility of the formulation and growth of sustainably designed green SeNPs that can be produced, conserved, and marketed securely across the globe.

Chitosan, a naturally occurring polysaccharide derived from chitin, possesses inherent antimicrobial properties, making it a promising candidate for treating various dermal infections. This review follows a systematic approach to analyze relevant studies that have investigated the effectiveness of chitosan-based hydrogels in the context of dermal infections. By examining the available evidence, this review aims to evaluate these hydrogels' overall efficacy, safety, and potential applications for managing dermal infections. This review's primary focus is to gather and analyze data from different recent studies about chitosan-based hydrogels combating dermal infections; this includes assessing their ability to inhibit the growth of microorganisms and reduce infection-related symptoms. Furthermore, this review also considers the safety profile of chitosan-based hydrogels, examining any potential adverse effects associated with their use. This evaluation is crucial to ensure that these hydrogels can be safely utilized in the management of dermal infections without causing harm to patients. The review aims to provide healthcare professionals and researchers with a comprehensive understanding of the current evidence regarding the use of chitosan-based hydrogels for dermal infection management. The findings from this review can contribute to informed decision-making and the development of potential treatment strategies in this field.
