RESUMO

Ceramic powders of Sr1-1.5xYbxTiO3 (x = 0.0, 0.0125, 0.025, 0.05 and 0.075) solid solutions were synthesized by the polymeric complex method. The crystal structure, microstructure and optical properties of the powders annealed at 800 °C for 1 h were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy, respectively. All the solid solutions exhibit a cubic perovskite-like structure. The reflectance spectra show a broadband below 400 nm ascribed to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) O2- → Ti4+ fundamental state. The Yb3+ (λem = 980 nm) excitation spectra show a broadband being also compatible with the LMCT O2- → Ti4+ state, indicating the energy transfer from the host to the Yb3+. The sample with x = 0.025 presents the highest emission intensity upon near UV excitation, which is further enhanced when the powder is treated under an oxygen-rich atmosphere. The luminescence quenching of Yb3+ is explained as due to defects associated with O2- and Sr2+ vacancies. Finally, it is shown that the solid solutions may downshift photons from UV to wavelengths where a crystalline-silicon photovoltaic solar cell has a higher spectral responsivity.

RESUMO

The synthesis of AlN and TiB2 by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and the effect of Nb2O5, Y2O3 and ZrO2 additions on the mechanical properties and densification of the produced composites is reported and discussed. After the SPS process, dense AlN and TiB2 composites with Nb2O5, Y2O3 and ZrO2 were successfully prepared. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that in the AlN composites, the addition of Nb2O5 gives rise to Nb4N3 during sintering. The compound Y3Al5O12 (YAG) was observed as precipitate in the sample with Y2O3. X-ray diffraction analysis of the TiB2 composites showed TiB2 as a single phase in these materials. The maximum Vickers and toughness values were 14.19 ± 1.43 GPa and 27.52 ± 1.75 GPa for the AlN and TiB2 composites, respectively.

RESUMO

Research and development of lead-free piezoelectric materials are still the hottest topics in the field of piezoelectricity. One of the most promising lead-free family of compounds to replace lead zirconate-titanate for actuators is that of Bi0.50Na0.50TiO3 (BNT) based solid solutions. The pseudo-binary (1 - x)Bi0.50Na0.50TiO3-xBa1 - yCayTiO3 system has been proposed for high temperature capacitors and not yet fully explored as piezoelectric material. In this work, the solid solution with x = 0.06 and y = 0.10 was obtained by two different synthesis routes: solid state and Pechini, aiming at using reduced temperatures, both in synthesis (<800 °C) and sintering (<1150 °C), while maintaining appropriated piezoelectric performance. Crystal structure, ceramic grain size, and morphology depend on the synthesis route and were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, together with scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The effects of processing and ceramic microstructure on the structural, dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties were discussed in terms of a shift of the Morphotropic Phase Boundary, chemically induced by the synthesis route.

RESUMO

The solid-state method was used to synthesize single phase potassium-sodium niobate (KNN) co-doped with the La3+-Mn4+ and Eu3+-Fe3+ ion pairs. Structural determination of all studied solid solutions was accomplished by XRD and Rietveld refinement method. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies were performed to determine the oxidation state of paramagnetic centers. Optical spectroscopy measurements, excitation, emission and decay lifetime were carried out for each solid solution. The present study reveals that doping KNN with La3+-Mn4+ and Eu3+-Fe3+ at concentrations of 0.5 mol % and 1 mol %, respectively, improves the ferroelectric and piezoelectric behavior and induce the generation of optical properties in the material for potential applications.

RESUMO

The search for electroceramic materials with enhanced ferro-pyro-piezoelectric properties and revealing the perovskite type structure has been the objective of a significant number of manuscripts reported in the literature. This has been usually carried out by proposing the synthesis and processing of new compounds and solid solution series. In this work, several methods to obtain ferro-pyro-piezoelectric families of materials featuring the well-known ABO3 perovskite structure (or related) such as BaTiO3, Ba1-xCaxTi1-yZryO3, (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3, (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 and their solid solutions with different cations either in the A or B positions, are presented. For this kind of materials, the challenge for obtaining a single phase compound with a specific grain size and morphology and, most importantly, with the adequate stoichiometry, will also be discussed. The results reviewed herein will be discussed in terms of the tendency of working with softer conditions, i.e., lower temperature and shorter reaction times, also referred to as soft-chemistry.

RESUMO

Methyl parathion (MP) is a very toxic organophosphate pesticide used as a non-systematic insecticide and acaricide on many corps. As MP and its by-products are highly toxic, they have to be retained to avoid pollution of rivers and lakes. Highly efficient sorbents are hydrotalcites (HTs) (or anionic clays). We have correlated the degradation of an aqueous solution of MP at room temperature, with the basicity of the adsorbing materials. It was found that the metal composition of hydrotalcites determines both the surface electronic properties (basic or acidic) and the sorption capacity. Depending on the basic strength, some calcined hydrotalcites can catalyze the transformation of MP to p-nitrophenol (p-NP) and retain its by-products. Such a process has the advantage of being able to be carried out at room temperature and at the pH of the pesticide solution.

RESUMO

Tetrahedrally coordinated oxides usually present polymorphism, but for NaGaO(2), only the beta polymorph has been reported. In this work, the synthesis and structural characterization of gamma-sodium gallate, gamma-NaGaO(2), are presented. The crystal structure belongs to the orthorhombic system, space group Pbca (No. 61), and has been characterized by a Rietveld refinement of the X-ray powder diffraction pattern. The structure is similar to those exhibited by the gamma phases of many tetrahedral oxides.
